As I left Burns/Hines and was enjoying the high desert scenery, a recommendation to stop at the BLM Wild Horse Corrals popped into my head just as I approached the sign - I hadn't realized it would be so well marked! I zipped up the driveway - nobody seemed to be around - and quickly came upon corrals of horses. Gorgeous herds of horses. The first enclosure seemed to have pretty feral horses - they moved around as though the herd was one body - flittering and nervous, unsure what to make of the motorcycle. The other pens with nursing mares seemed to be more mellow - and a few even approached looking for handouts. The horses were really beautiful and amazing - I have never seen so many horses together like this!
On my way out, I saw a staff member and he told me that the horses were pretty much all up for adoption - with the exception of some special breed which had recently been captured and would be auctioned off to support the facility. The rest of the horses could be brought home if you have a place to keep her, a trailer and a $125 adoption fee. Visiting is free!
The BLM website has fantastic information about the horses and how they determine which horses to capture, how they are moved, vaccinated and adopted out. This is really a fantastic organization and I highly recommend checking out the website and stopping in to see some horses if you're ever in SE Oregon. read more
