As a mom, I was so anxious about sleep training. Even hearing the phrase made me uncomfortable. The idea of letting my baby cry, even a little, felt completely unnatural to me. I had done endless research, tried all the "gentle" methods, and still felt like nothing truly aligned with what I was comfortable with. I can't rate our coaching experience highly enough. It was really life-changing to be able to sleep again -- for everyone in the family to have great sleep. Our son has been doing really well now that he is sleeping- he's really cheerful in the day, his appetite's great, and he's clearly learning new skills. Now both Mom and Dad can put our son to bed. It's as easy as giving him a bath, a bottle, reading him a book, hug and a kiss goodnight, place in crib drowsy but awake. And he settles and soothes on his own! We watch him fall asleep on the baby monitor. It's wonderful. I really liked that we did Joanna's gentle method. Before working with Joanna, our nights were chaos. He was up probably every 1-2 hours and we were just exhausted. Something had to change. We were getting on average 4 hours of broken sleep per night. It was just causing havoc in our lives. After working with Joanna, it's a complete 180. Now, he sleeps for probably 9- 10 hours straight and we're getting our full nights of sleep. Bedtime has become simple and stress-free: We literally put him into the crib at around 7:30 and he just falls asleep on his own,without us needing to do anything to help him sleep.. It is "hands free". It's so easy. No more rocking, no more bouncing, no more waking in the middle of the night. The individualized support mattered so much for us: Getting the one-on-one help was a really important part in our difficult case for sure... just being able to adapt to his changing needs every day and make sure me and my wife were on the same page, that was the key. What surprised me most is how being his sleep coach changed my relationship with my son for the better. I have gotten closer, for sure. I'm more in tune with his needs and his wants. We had done a lot of reading around different sleep training methods--extinction, the sleep lady shuffle, Ferber--and had tried all of them to some extent with little success. The idea of sleep coaching methods like Ferber sound great on paper, but it can be difficult to put into practice when your child is fussing, out of their comfort zone, and when all you want as a parent is to get them to sleep without them being distressed. Our daughter needed *a lot* of physical touch in order to soothe herself to sleep, so I was stuck by her crib while she rubbed my arm for up to 2 hours every night. She would sleep 3-5 hours in her own bed before waking up and needing to co-sleep. Co-sleeping for me wasn't a huge deal, but mom is a lighter sleeper so she was being deprived of sleep. Naps would take anywhere from 30-60 minutes to get her to fall asleep and she would end up sleeping for only 45-60 minutes. The amount of time spent just getting her to sleep was taking a toll. We really needed an objective third party with expertise who could guide us through the process of teaching our daughter to sleep. It is a lot more difficult to navigate this process alone--you're kind of flying blind, and it's so easy to go down a wrong road or inadvertently introduce more sleep crutches that you then need to undo. We truly needed our hands to be held throughout the entire process. Joanna nicknamed our daughter "the Curveball Queen" because sleep coaching our daughter was so tricky; nearly every week there was a new issue that we'd have to navigate around. We definitely needed the expert guidance and the accountability of having consistent check-in calls, thorough discussions, and email & text support in a very responsive environment. All of this is what kept our progress moving. And at the end of the process I just thought "this is a different child." This is the ultimate prize. Because now she's happy being independent in her own crib, in her own room. To see her on the monitor just talking away to her stuffies before getting herself to sleep; I can't express how proud I am that she's been able to learn so much about something so critical to her well being. So now we have a routine: she takes her bath, puts on PJs, brushes her teeth, gives mom a hug, kiss and high five, we read a couple books and I tell her we're going to rest. I leave the room, and she lies down and goes to sleep. She's sleeping through the night 10 hours from 8pm-6am and wakes up happy. She's just so much more comfortable in her own crib and in her own skin. And now we're presented with a new problem: we don't know what to do with ourselves with all this free time! If you're having issues with your child's sleep, I cannot recommend Joanna enough. She's an incredible fount of knowledge and experience regarding pediatric sleep; she is so good at listening, analyzing, and providing potential solutions that are within your and your child's comfort zones; and she sticks with it until you see results. Before we reached out to Joanna, we were really struggling with our son's sleep. He was having these massive meltdowns and we had no idea how to get him to go to sleep. Each night, he had to fall asleep in our arms and we had to transfer him to the crib, usually it failed and then we had a night full of frequent wake-ups and early mornings. We resorted to completely co-sleeping and contact napping because that was the only way we could get him to sleep. The cosleeping only worked for a little while and then after 6-7 months, it just all went downhill. My mental health was really struggling. I was severely sleep-deprived and I was feeling really angry and frustrated. His crying was triggering me severely. During the day, it was hard to engage with him because I was just so exhausted and so frustrated. After just a couple of days of sleep coaching, he was sleeping through the night! Before sleep coaching, life was hard. He was never a baby that slept through the night. We were always dealing with multiple wake ups, always needing to feed. Up until about a year old, I figured "Well he's still a baby." However, as he got older, his sleep just kept getting progressively worse. He was only contact sleeping and IF we were able to transfer him, it was for maybe 1.5-2 hours. We had thought it was just going to magically get better. We were making the silly assumption that all we had to do was "Just wait, he will grow out of it, and then he would start sleeping" Now, he takes perfect naps and falls sleep at 6PM and sleeps 12 hours. We're no longer battling for 3 hours to get him to bed. Now we have time to accomplish things. We can order sushi, we can have a steak night, or stay-in date night. There's also time for the house projects. With reliable morning wake ups, Mom can take a shower and get ready for the day. We're able to dream. We have caregivers wanting to take him for overnights since he is such a good sleeper now. We can go on a vacation! In fact, we receive an invitation for a destination wedding; no kids invited. If we had gotten that invitation a month ago, it would've been an automatic NO, but NOW, We can GO to this awesome destination wedding knowing our child will be happy sleeping at Grandma's house. read more

For those who have tried sleep training with no success- We definitely went through that and just kind of needed some customization. YouTube might work for 50% or 70% of other kids, but it might not work for you. Being able to have someone really customize to exactly what we were dealing with was key for us. It was a challenge to get our son to sleep even for an hour. He was fussy, irritable, moving around all night and nobody was getting sleep. My wife had a nurse all night long, our son would wake up a lot and we ended up co-sleeping before we reached out to Joanna. In the daytime then he would have this incredible amount of energy. So worth it! We love Joanna. Our 3 year-old was always a terrible sleeper since she was a baby. We tried sleep training on our own a million times, but it never really stuck. When baby #2 came around, things got really hard with her. She started protesting bedtime, waking up overnight and early in the morning, tantruming, w and always needing me. Sleep was really hard. With the baby, she was nursing on demand all night and going to bed super late. We didn't really have a schedule. My husband and I were like ships passing in the night. Once we had the second baby, we just didn't have the mental bandwidth to conquer our 3 year olds sleep issues. My husband's work colleague recommended Joanna whom they used with their 2 kids. What helped me was learning the science behind sleep. That was something I wasn't fully aware of with our 1st kid so that helped me not only rationalize what was happening, but also take a step back and say "if we can help coach her through this, we're actually gonna get a happier baby overall." The baby is now sleeping all night from 6pm-6am. That's something that my first didn't do until she was 2/2.5. We started nap training and she is now napping in her crib for her first few naps of the day. And things are going really well with our toddler. The framework that Joanna provided really helped her. She's now alseep at 6:30pm, sleeping 12 hours in her own bed in her own room. Her behavioral issues during the day have really subsided. I think she was just operating in that overtired zone and we didn't realize that we were parenting when she was exhausted and it was the hardest. My husband and I went out on the front porch and had a glass of wine together and we realized that we had not done that since the 2nd baby was born. We can order dinner or hang out together, talk, and get to know each other again. It's possible for things to get easier. One of my hangups with sleep coaching was it will be too hard. No one can help us. We're just in it. Everybody does this. I just have to stick it out. That's not the case, we should have done it sooner. Before we decided to work with Joanna, our 16 month old daughter was waking up 3-5 times a night to nurse. She was co-sleeping with mom for the majority of the night and it took 45 minutes for us to put her back to sleep. Mom and Dad were exhausted all the time, not getting a lot of quality sleep. The time that I did spend with her during the day felt like I couldn't really focus on her. I was emotionally and physically drained. The bedtime routine doesn't take 45 minutes anymore, it's now a super simple routine that takes 15-20 minutes. She loves her crib. It's really comforting to know that she is well-rested. Life has opened up for us again. Mom and dad get a lot of quality time together. We get to watch movies. We can travel without the fear of thinking she won't sleep or that we can't enjoy ourselves. We have lots more motivation and energy. I no longer feel like I have to avoid social gatherings. We did a week long trip to the East coast and she slept through the night every night and her naps were also consistent. If all of your baby's needs are being met, they're eating, they're staying hydrated, they don't have any issues out of the norm and you're still struggling with sleep, then it's probably time to come to terms with the fact that you need to change something else in the routine. That requires understanding Sleep Science and setting yourself and your baby up right and giving them the opportunity to learn how to sleep on their own. We have two children and our first child had a medical condition so we had to wait until seven months for her to start sleeping through the night. As a parent, it feels like I SHOULD be able to do the research and figure out what's going on with our child but it always felt dauting to figure out where to start and so much of the information online felt contradictory or not something I was willing to try (ie. 'cry it out'). We knew about Joanna from a friend connection, but had always said..."We don't need that" because we just thought we had a baby with 'low sleep needs' and that this was just the life we were destined for, finally after a terrible few weeks of sleep and an upcoming job change we decided to reach out and see if she could help. Life before sleep coaching was about nursing 2-4 times a night in the co-sleeping environment. Bedtime took 45-60 minutes and was really stressful. Dad was sleeping in the spare room. We were tiptoeing around at night, not really enjoying our evenings. It was time to make a change. As first time parents, we were terrified with no idea where to start. Before sleep coaching, my husband and I were just in a complete state of confusion all day long because of the sleep deprivation. Before we called Joanna, life was rough. We felt so tired, drained, disconnected and everything was a battle. Sleep was a nightmare and the most challenging part of parenting. Dad was rocking our son to sleep for 1-2 hours, singing songs the whole time. It was like having a newborn and Mom and Dad were getting a maximum of 2 hours of continuous sleep a night. I had done so much research and read so much about sleep and every method, but nothing was really working. I was always against cry-it-out, there's something inside my heart that just would not let me do that. Our 15 month old was struggling to sleep through the night and we were struggling to help him. We reached a point where we were not able to function during the day. We were not able to focus or give him quality time during the day because of sleepless nights. TLDR- Result: Our 4.5 years old son is able to sleep through the night in his own room with Joanna's sleep coaching, in 18 days! We spent years exhausted because our son needed to hold our hand to fall asleep, then he would wake up at midnight every night and won't be able to fall back asleep until my husband (or me if he's traveling for work) co-sleeps with him. Which turns into a funny-not-funny situation where I got to sleep in the master bedroom in the big bed, while my husband and my son co-sleeps in a twin bed. Researching around, I saw that most sleep coaches focus on Baby sleep training, so at first I thought my son might be too old for sleep coaching, as he's now so vocal about his needs and knows his way around the house that he would immediately cry, run out the room, and bang on doors crying he needs us. We were skeptical: would he willingly stay in his own room even with coaching? But the situation has turned more desperate for us as we now have a 1-year old baby who's being sleep trained, and I was getting pretty worried that as baby becomes more aware of our home routine, he would wonder why his older brother gets all the attention with either mom or dad sleeping in his room, whereas he's left alone in his room. Also, my husband is traveling for work a lot more nowadays and also need quiet time to work at night, and I also needed to tend to baby in the middle of the night (at the beginning when I first met Joanna), which made it challenging if older son cries out and runs into baby room to find me while waking up baby. I needed help. In comes Joanna, the Mary Poppins of sleep. We had homework to do to prepare for the transition. We followed her guidance step-by-step. We learned about my son's personality and how that correlates to his sleep window and pattern. We even got parenting tips and how to differentiate crying/whining and crying/real need from my son. My son is now getting a solid 11-11.5 hours of sleep a night! We have a new routine at home. My son expects and accepts the routine; he knows exactly what to do after dinner till bedtime. It was so helpful to role play some of the scenarios of what my child might say to us and how we should respond. Another light bulb moment. ~Importance of role-playing to prep a child, not just with sleep, but now I've used what i've learned in sleep coaching with other situations with my child too. Things I did not expect (but it's part of the whole "trust the process" journey): ~i had to do scrapbooking for our new routine. with photos and everything. the more personalized the better, so our child feels part of the process, even though he didn't take part in doing the scrapbook with us. Somehow, it still worked! (I was really expecting my son to resist this part) ~unlike some other companies who offers on-demand night texting, we follow up with Joanna the day after. At first, i was so nervous i thought we wouldn't survive the nights without immediate night help (even though i was even more nervous to ask Joanna, so that never came up), but actually now in hindsight, it's probably a good thing we had to face the sleep coaching at nights by ourselves, so we could be in-the-moment with our child, instead of pulling out our phones texting sos...haha ~we had to buy things to set up our house more properly. we need a hatch to set up programmed night lights for our older son. i opted for a cheaper version of a hatch from amazon. Still does the job. ~I didn't expect to have a set up a mattress outside my son's room, but again it works! ~ while it is gentle sleep coaching, there is still crying involved. And it was very hard to be in the room at first. For us, the crying/reaching out to me/calling out "I need you mama!!!" lasted for a few nights. With Joanna's help, i knew what to do/say. At 15 months old, my daughter had never slept through the night. She would wake up multiple times a night to nurse, and sometimes she'd be awake for hours. It just seemed to become harder and harder to get her to go back to sleep the older she got. Joanna is amazing. I have only the highest recommendations for her. She's a baby sleep whisperer. I worked with her for both my kids, though I learned so much from her with my first kid, I felt well prepared for my second and didn't need as much help. Helping babies sleep is an art form. I'm sure at one time this knowledge must have been passed down through generations, but I found my parents had little helpful advice and though I read ALL the sleep books about ALL the sleep methods, nothing I tried worked with my first daughter. Until I reached out to Joanna. I wasn't comfortable with the traditional Cry It Out Method and Joanna offered me a much more flexible, gentler option that could be adapted to my daughter's particular character and needs. I was grateful for the sleep plan that we co-developed (which worked beautifully), but much more than that, I was extremely grateful for what she taught me about how baby sleep works. This whole sleep coaching thing is incredible! The bedtime routine is so easy and beautiful, it just flows. Now once he goes to bed, we get to relax and watch a show. We were co-sleeping but it was getting a little complicated with lots of wake ups and needing to be nursed back to sleep. We were putting him to sleep way too late and sometimes it'd take a couple hours to get him down. Now, he goes to bed by 7:30 is asleep in less than 10 minutes, sleeping 11 hours at night and taking taking 2 solid naps! I was worried about sleep coaching impacting our nursing relationship because it was very important to me and I wanted to continue nursing him. Here we are after sleep coaching and things are amazing. Mind blowing is actually what I always told Joanna when we had our follow up calls. Our baby was not sleeping through the night. He was waking 3-4 times a night to nurse and would need to be nursed, rocked, walked around, or shaken up and down like a very heavy sack of potatoes for at least 30 to 40 minutes. My son was 18 months old when we started sleep coaching. Until that point, he had only slept through the night a handful of times in his life. He slept in his nursery and would wake up multiple times per night. He needed milk and soothing to get back to sleep each time. His sleep got significantly worse when we moved to a new city, home, and daycare. He was terrified of being in his new room and would bang his head on his crib to the point of getting bruises. He also forced himself to throw up to force my husband and I to come into his room. For the first time in his life at 18 months, we started co-sleeping, hoping that would help him sleep through the night. The co-sleeping only led to worse sleep for my husband and I, because we were scared of squishing our son or having him fall off the bed. Although we were co-sleeping, my son continued to wake multiple times per night. Now, instead of one parent getting sleep...none of us were. We were at our wits end from not sleeping through the night for 18 months straight at that point, and every area of our life was suffering (marriage, parenting, work, home maintenance, home cleanliness, meal prepping). I contemplated quitting my job and becoming a stay at home mom (something I never wanted to do). My husband thought about quitting his job for one that required less travel (and therefore paid significantly less). Our 18 month old was co-sleeping and nursing and still was not sleeping any more than 2-3 hr stretches, which was taking a toll on all of us.
