Floatation tanks. Surely that's some sort of new age mumbo jumbo, right?…read more Well, with an introductory deal to celebrate opening, why the heck not find out. I recall hearing about this sort of thing when I was a kid, and I was always curious, so when I got asked if I wanted to try it. Yes please! So you rock up and enter a quiet, dark space. It's quite open, there's modern furniture, and friendly staff greet you and check you in. If it's your first time they will give you an induction tour, showing you the facilities and how the pods work. Here's the deal. There's four rooms, each with a giant egg shaped pod filled with super salty water. Each room has a shower for before and after, and they supply you with wax earplugs, towels, shampoo and conditioner, bodywash, etc. You really only need to bring yourself. Shower up, squish in your ear plugs and climb into the pod. You pull the lid down (or leave it open if you choose. I'm claustrophobic, but had no issue in the pod), and push the button to the left to turn off the light. The button on your right will summon help. At this point, music starts playing through the water and eventually the room light turns out too, leaving you in almost complete darkness, floating in body temperature water. Towards the end of your hour, music starts up again and the lights turn on when you're done. So how is it? First time was spent thinking far too much about everything, feeling every itch, and getting a sore neck from my head sinking back into the water. But I slept damn well that night. Next time, I floated more comfortably, got my ear plugs in better (they are not mandatory, but your ears will be below the waterline) and felt a lot more relaxed. I'm told some people will fall asleep, and I can see that happening. Slept like a stone that night too. I highly recommend checking it out, but don't just go once, it can take some time to get into the swing of it all. And the water WILL sting if it gets in your eyes or if you have any cuts (they recommend not shaving the day of your visit, and applying the supplied vaseline to any cuts), and I am told it tastes awful. Finish up with a nice cup of tea and a glass of water in the recovery lounge.
