Came here on a friday night for happy hour. It was blissfully uncrowded. We took over the room with the Spongebob Squarepants fishtank and tropical vibes dome. You have to order drinks at the bar but they will bring your food to your table. The Kyiv Mules (nice to support Ukraine by renaming it) were strong and $9 during HH. We also got a $8 grilled cheese that was gooey and yummy. The best part is the retro vibes of the lounge. The bartenders can whip up creative craft cocktails in addition to the classics, and they offer a limited food menu featuring imaginative grilled cheese sandwiches, which are nommy! During lockdown, the only way to gain access was by reservation only, so I was surprised when PIC and I walked by and saw the sign advertising Happy Hour. I grabbed his arm and said, "It's open again. Let's get a drink!" Jesus was behind the bar. He has a warm, friendly personality. I told him I was digging the tunes and he said on Sundays he plays his own personal playlist. (They have a DJ most nights.) Not only does Jesus make a good drink he also has great taste in music. I ordered a HH margarita. It was very refreshing and perfect for the hot summer evening. PIC & I enjoyed our cocktails and conversation with Jesus and came back the following Sunday because he is that cool! The place gets crowded later in the evening, so if you want to relax and chill I suggest Happy Hour, especially on Sunday when Jesus is manning the bar. This isn't a speakeasy or bar that's brought up on lists of speakeasy's but it should be. You would never know what is hiding in here by just walking or driving by. We got here after a show during the week closing on midnight so we had the place almost to ourselves. The ambience is normally very lively, dj on the weekends and pretty crowded so being able to get a seat with ease was nice. The beer menu lacks a bit of originality but this is more of a cocktail place so if you're a beer drinker you've been warned. Other than that it was a good menu with nice variety and it even had options for those that don't drink alcohol with some refreshing mocktails. The drinks were good, not much to say about the beer since it's canned or bottled. The mocktails were good from what my group said. As well as other mixed drinks. It was the first time I had gone out to karaoke which happens on Wednesdays and I possibly picked a bad day to come because there were some A-list celebrities also out for karaoke. Beware! If you go to this spot, do not feel pressured into leaving an additional tip. I say additional because apparently they tip themselves and it starts at 18%. So any added tip increases that %. In other words, they are telling you "the beer costs this much and in order for you to buy it, we require a minimum of 18% tip. That is also the reason we do not accept cash." Truly a barber shop. We entered and it was completely empty when we got there. Walked to the door to the back which is the entrance to the speakeasy. Reserved a table and was seated immediately. It was around 9pm and the place was fairly empty. First drink was the "smoke & dagger" which was absolutely phenomenal! I'm not even a big cucumber fan and I enjoyed this drink so much I even ate the cucumber. It was so light and refreshing. Then I got long islands. Upon arrival we decided to order drinks and I proceeded to pay with my card and didn't tip. The bartender then proceeded to try and shake me down for tip money when it was literally my first drink of the night and I just arrived. I thought tips were earned not given ? I drove 40 minutes to get to this place on a Saturday night, at about 8-9pm. I had a long week of work and finally had gotten the opportunity to go have a little fun. Once arrived I walked to the bar and ordered a drink, the bartender looked at me and told me.. "i'll serve you water and no drinks for you" I thought he was joking! Blind Barber is always a great time, I always bring people that are new to the area here because it's a really fun environment with great music and drinks. The barber shop/speakeasy just adds to the fun of the place but even without that element it's just a really fun place to hang out. They tend to have djs on the weekends and the music genres can vary a bit but it's always a good time. The drinks are well made craft that give you a nice flavor without being overly pretentious. The bartenders are friendly enough but usually pretty busy. I never have a problem finding a seat here as long as you get there somewhat early. I really like that the crowd is pretty mixed which makes for a nice experience since most of the HLP spots tend to be a little less diverse. I went to the Blind Barber in Highland Park for the first time last night. First, the positives: cute space, love the speakeasy vibe, the event that was being hosted at the time was a ton of fun. Now the reason for the 2-star review here is that I had gotten 3 drinks in total and used my card to pay, wrote in a tip, and went on my way. When I got home, I was way surprised and disappointed to see that there had been an 18% gratuity added to my check that the bartender failed to bring to my attention, which resulted in a 41% total tip based on the original check's amount. Now before anyone starts rolling their eyes or claiming I should have looked closer, I did in fact verify the line items for the drinks that I had ordered and consumed. The issue here is that automatic gratuity is not standard practice and when it is used, patrons should be made aware of this. Hell, every coffee that you purchase these days is emblazoned with "CAUTION: HOT COFFEE IS HOT" when all hot coffee is expected to be hot. Not all bars add automatic gratuity so it should be brought to customers' attention when automatic gratuity is employed. The practice of sneaking it onto a person's bill without their knowledge is shameful and akin to theft. I will likely be returning to the bar in the future, because as I said the bar itself is good, it's the business practices that might prevent me from coming back if management has any problem with adjusting my bill when I call them later today. read more

Terrible customer service. If zero stars were an option, this would warrant it. I had made an appointment for a haircut after having visited the speakeasy in the back multiple times. But when I arrived (on time), I was made to wait for 10 minutes before I realized my barber was not there. No communication about what was going on at all. Apparently my barber had cancelled and didn't bother let me know. Isn't that the whole reason for an appointment? I never received a notification or email or text about their cancellation. As I told the only barber there that I was leaving since I would be further delayed if I waited for them to get to me, he did not apologize but instead rudely told me I would be charged the 50% cancellation fee anyways. I couldn't believe it. I was told it was not their problem and I had to email them to get a refund. I left angry, walked into Fellow Barber over on the next block, and they took care of immediately, had me out the door in 20 minutes with a fresh cut. That's the way it's done. And apparently, they've heard many similar stories of bad experiences at Blind Barber from their clientele. Seems like they should stop masquerading as a barber shop, ditch the whole speakeasy gimmick and just stick to serving drinks and not wasting people's valuable time. I am deeply disappointed by this establishment's lack of respect. As a long-time resident, I've never encountered such disrespect and unprofessionalism from a local business. Despite being excited to try their barbering services and being a fan of the bar, my experience was disheartening. The treatment I received has permanently tainted my perception of Blind Barber. My previous recommendations to friends and my neighborhood pride have been eroded by this incident. I sincerely hope that this review serves as a wakeup call for the establishment to address its customer service issues. Just doesn't seem like the way to make it right is to offer a discount to come back for more terrible service and not address the issue with their rude employees. What a cool place! I went with a party of 4 on a Friday night, relatively early in the night around 8pm or so. We were able to get a seat quickly but I noticed that most tables were reserved or full, so reservations are highly recommended! First of all, I have only been to the location in Chicago and didn't even realize there was one in Highland Park! We walked through the barber shop and into the back via a door on the left side of the back wall. Immediately you go into a dimly lit hallway and then walk into the main room. There is the bar area where a lot of people stood or sat on stools, and there are a few small seating areas and two larger, more private/secluded areas which are great for larger parties. We didn't try any food but each ordered a cocktail. My favorite was the Hot Heather and least favorite was Strawberry Fields. So, I've been to other BB locations before and to be honest it's been a mixed bag. I was kind of hesitant when it was suggested as a the next stop. The set up is still the same, there's a legit barber shop out front but and then you go through a door and into the bar. The retro, 70s den-ish decor is still there but the service is definitely more responsive and friendly. Maybe it was because it was an off-peak day but the bartender was friendly, quick with recommendations and based on that I tried the IMPEACH 45. Politics or not, it was a good whiskey based cocktail, like a peach pie spiked with bourbon.
