Another reason why my opinion on this school is so low is as a Native American I was unable to wear any sort of cultural outfit or accessories for fear of getting a 1,000 dollar fine and having my diploma withheld. The kids are not allowed to be children! You will have to pay for everything and don't get a decent education. The recesses are too short and and the kids don't even get one on Wednesday this year. Your child will have to memorize endless prayers in every class (PE, music and art). Homework is over the top here with at least 1.5 hours. My kids were miserable here! So happy we left! A lot of good families have left over the last few years as the school tolerates horrible children to stay (they may go to the office but never removed from the school, tuition is too important to the school). Also Skaggs school is hiding abuse cases, tolerating unacceptable behavior from teachers, the catholic school system in Utah is in trouble and it's apparent. My son was struggling badly in school and we pulled him from our local school in the middle of 6th grade. Draper Academy and their staff and students welcomed him with open arms. They tested him and he was 2 grade levels behind in math and a bit behind in comprehension as well. This school was a place for him to rest, learn and recoup for a year and a half. He was able to relax, gain confidence in himself again and lovegoing to school every day! This school was such a gift for him. He is now in 8th grade and he just started at one of our local junior highs and we are a month into school and he has straight A's. He is flourishing and able to stay organized and is understanding his 8th grade math. The school only lets you have 10 absence and your kid have to make up all the homework from the days they were absent and usually the homework takes a hour or more to do. One time they let a kidnapper in the school without even noticing!!! So the kids saw the police coming in to look for the kidnapper, the worst part is they didn't even have a lock down!! It affected her cognitive abilities and she was forced to miss a good amount of school as well as special events of senior year. The kind, discreet response of the teachers and administrative staff blew us all away. They were fiercely protective of her. My daughter is pretty private but the students and their parents who knew were equally as amazing! Character was high with the kids (they didn't gossip much like you might find at another school, held her confidences and, as a result, feel like the school will forever be in my heart. The only issue that holds me back is that I feel it can be very rules heavy, a bit punitive (kids were expelled and punished for little). It lacks a vibrant social scene, can be a bit provincial in its academic and enriching offerings and can tend to mute students from sharing thoughts and expressing themselves. The last thing is that students don't really head committees or initiatives in junior or senior year... they really should and parents should be nowhere to be found. High school is the time to try new things and fail. Prom committee, the school store, a real school newspaper...They really aren't encouraged to as the parent body leads all. This proved tougher when my daughter went off to high school. Other than that, great school with great classes and teachers, special kids and- for the most part- a wonderful, warm parent body. I used to work multiple 16 hour days a week and not once was I thanked, I was just asked for more. The only time anyone will ever talk to you is to tell you how you did something they did not approve of. The upper management completely fabricated a narrative of me that was false. I have the same degree as the owners and I was treated like I did not even have a high school degree. I spent more time with the boys than anyone else but my thoughts and opinions meant nothing. They say they are a relationship model program but in reality if you have any connection with the boys they immediately insinuate you have no boundaries. Staff that should have been fired were promoted because they played into the workplace garbage and were easily manipulated. Want to talk about drugs? Sure. Teach them about drugs? Go for it. Masterbation? How to extend ejaculation? Give them access to pornography? Or lose a kid or two? Hate kids? Be out of ratio? Want to sleep with other staff? Dress like a slut for work with teenage boys? Out kids sexuality to parents? Break HIPAA? Expect a promotion soon! These are all examples of current staff, management and owners. Do yourself and your child a favor and NEVER send them here. The kids are AMAZING. The only reason I stayed was for them. To keep them safe and loved. They deserve so much better. They are vulnerable children who are depending on adults to keep them safe and nurtured but instead they are surrounded by money hungry corporate puppets who do not care for them.

In our case, they haven't even figured out that the emotional "trauma," aka abuse came from the father's side. Our daughter is too gentle and kind to ever speak negatively about anyone, especially her children's father, but the staff should be trained and professional enough to sniff out the truth. Such a disappointment.
