The owner Shin Yee Man knows how to choose clothes that are accessible enough for everyone, but have a one-of-a-kind, handmade quality that makes them more personal. A favorite is Cinderloop's grey draped tunic with uncommon red string that tucks and pulls to create a unique shape ($148). Most dresses range from $100-$180 and tops from $30-$100. Some collections are by local designers and organic and handmade pieces can easily be found. The accessories are just as unique as the clothes, with purses, belts, hats, wallets, clutches, earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces found throughout the store. Eccentric bright jewelry are made of beads, feathers, string, precious stones, and silver and range from $20-$150, with the most unique rings made from Horn and Seed Pod for $20-$90. I have purchased ten to twelve pieces from the store and always get compliments whenever I wear one of Kourbella's truly exquisite designs. I have met the owner of the store, as well as a couple different salesgirls, and have found all of them kind, courteous and eager to assist. Things here are quite expensive, but on par for the designers offered: Nanette Lepore, Theory, Juicy, Rebecca Beeson, etc. (not full lines, but selections from each). Most everything is so pretty, but what is on sale, well, you can tell why they had to put it on sale. A few times, I've found some cool things, like a green Juicy long-sleeve tee that I loved but wore so much it developed holes in it. Note to self: stop being so lazy and hand-wash things that are supposed to be hand-washed. I was happy to see that they added a shoe section. Much needed. Only they charge a lot of money for supposedly "upscale" brands that I've never even heard of. I bought a pair of shoes suspiciously on sale from $120 to $50. I say "suspiciously" because designer shoes don't ever go on that kind of sale. They were supposedly good quality leather, but cut up my feet so badly, I think they were something else. Maybe they included some leather amongst the plastic. However, Precision also carries really great lines like Faryl Robin. So it's just hit-or-miss. In my case, I should have used better judgment, and no, doing three to four laps around the store in them does not even begin to reflect how they will perform on the street. A big gripe: the only Hanky Panky underbeneaths they carry are the low-rise ones. I suppose they are suited well for some very thin women, and that's fine. But I would have appreciated having the option.

They have some really cute stuff and the staff is actually really good a putting you in stuff that you wouldn't have tried before but that looks great on you. However, they tell you that EVERYTHING looks great on you and then start playing the "are you going to get it" game. Since I'm easily swayed by compliments ("really, I look skinny in this, I'll take it in every color"), I would end up buying things that I would instantly regret. Since I have no will power, I just stopped coming in for a while. Le sigh. There was a really cute dress in the window this weekend, so I broke my self imposed moratorium and went back in. There were a couple of interesting changes: (1) no more shoe section, just a few shoe choices now; (2) no more theory or other really expensive lines (the economy hits us hard); (3) the former shoe section is now the cheap clothes/sample sale section (I'm not sure that this is about, the clothes are never well made, usually are made out of polyester and they never have any sizes); (4) the sales people are just the same (I was greeted with - "hey, long time no see, you have to come in more so I can keep my job." Ummm, okay). So I bought the really cute dress, resisted buying another cute dress and the super cool belt that they put with the dress I ended up buying. I probably won't come back as a regular, my wallet can't really handle it. But it was a fun trip down memory lane and I now have a super cute spring dress (if spring ever arrives).

On a more personal note, I visited Albertine three times before deciding to feature it on The Boutique of the Week, not because I was wary of the selection, but the price is higher than my norm. However, Albertine truly is too good to pass up and is the perfect place to splurge and treat yourself to an amazing piece (or two, or three...). The jewelry is the best feature of Albertine and will have you coming back just to drool over it. The exquisitely edited collection is priced from $100 to a steep $1,000+. The beautiful vintage pieces are displayed in glass cases, but touching and dressing up is encouraged. Delicate necklaces share a wall with leather cuffs, and pendants of owls and horns share a case with a silver snake ring and jade earrings. Prices can only be found out from a large binder where handwritten notes and photos document the inventory. The womenswear boasts up-and-coming designers and custom-made pieces that are feminine and vintage-inspired ranging from $150-600+. Flowy fabrics in all colors can be found in floor-length silk gowns and highly-structured bomber jackets. The cozy store normally only has one or two sizes displayed, but the staff is happy to find you the perfect fit in the back. A Victorian couch faces a large mirror for ample viewing, and you can even sometimes find the owner's dog napping as the eclectically chic staff offers spot-on critiques and styling tips.
