If you are on your way to or from London this magnificent pub is a must. It is just off the Harlow…read moreturn of the M11. You take the A414 off the roundabout towards Chelmsford, immediately turn left into Hastingwood and you'll find the pub within 500yards. When the lads go on a day trip to France (a vomit voyage!) we always stop here for dinner. The second time I visited I had run out of money and Andy, the publican, recognised me and told me to just send him a cheque which I did. The pub has been run by the Keep family for over 16 years and has very friendly and attentive staff. In the 17th century it was known as the Half Way House due to it being halfway between London and Cambridge. Oliver Cromwell was a regular visitor. There is a good wine list and three real ales. Greene King IPA and Adnams Broadside are regulars with a constantly changing guest beer. The food is outstanding and is served lunchtime and evening (orders taken until 9.15). I love the constantly changing special board. On a recent visit I had a great spaghetti bolognaise with the most delicious garlic bread. On another occasion I had the broughing sausages with rich onion gravy and mash and another day it was the salt beef sandwich. All the meals are reasonably priced and great value. There are special food nights and Sunday roasts available. They tell me they have many visitors from Cambridge and even further away. The bar is split into 3 areas, attractively furnished with old oak beams and a lovely atmosphere. The pub started life as a farm and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was named the Rainbow, but had a topiary of a dove in the front garden, hence being renamed the Rainbow & Dove. For a great treat when heading along the M11 this pub makes a welcome break

    Prezzo - Dirty cups, argh!

When it's…read moregood, it can be very good; when it's not, orders get muddled, things don't arrive, and it's all a little mediocre. The chefs are good - I love the goats cheese al forno dish - but the waitstaff are more of a mixed bag. The lunchtime staff I've encountered have been lovely, but in the evenings they seem very rushed and harried, even when the restaurant isn't full. The room itself gets very loud when full - the acoustics amplify every bellow, shriek or exclamation from your fellow diners. To conclude, it's fair, but could be very good - it's a great location.

The staff seemed distracted and the food took ages to come out even though it wasn't that busy. The starters were ok, the crab balls were nice, but the squid wasn't liked at all. Out of four of us, only one person really enjoyed their food, which was unfortunate. The cutlery and glasses should have been much cleaner than they were! The waitress poured the drinks, so the grime on the cup wasn't visible until after. Another thing that confused me was the recycling bins being taken out through the front of the restaurant whilst people were eating. Maybe it was a one off, but I didn't think it was appropriate. Because of all the above we decided against dessert. Prezzo are usually good, so I will visit again, just not this particular branch.

I advise you guys DO NOT GO

I would happily travel for a steak here and I'm not even that fond of bovine meat. I've had better food here and for better value than in many trendy eateries in Soho. The selection of starters is yummy; they don't change much, so you better get a favorite. The beer glazed pork belly and the black pearl scallops are my pick, in all of their different incarnations. The portions are fair sized and won't leave you too full too early. For the mains, I usually go for the rump steak or the ribeye. You have a choice of sauces, some great and some not so much; but the garlic butter is still the best. You also get amazing fries + a whole wedge of lettuce covered in blue cheese sauce and parmesan shavings. In the days when I'm really not into cow I go for the chicken with cheese and pancetta crumbs. Some orders (the steaks and the chicken, for example) will get you a slice of something called "onion loaf", basically a lump of caramelized onions fried in a bit of batter? Sounds odd, but if your choice of mains doesn't come with it then order it anyway. Trust me. After stuffing yourself with protein walk into the Epping forest surrounding the restaurant to burn some calories and breathe some fresh air... Just ignore the roundabout noise and enjoy. :)
