Saw this on yelp when researching places to stop in my way to SoCal from the coast. I was intrigued by the James Dean story and so I stopped here. This was James Dean's last stop before he got into a fatal accident hence his huge cutout outside the gas station. Store was spacious with lots of different snack particularly nuts. Restroom was clean and service was excellent. The young lady who helped me with my nut selection was friendly and helpful. Place wasn't too busy unlike stops alongside I-5. Recommend stopping here. Worth the slightly higher gas prices. read more

I have been stopping here for years when I'm on this highway traveling. There are so many local products from small businesses which helps them. They are a bit expensive but they are worth it. I love their chocolates which I think are better than see's chocolates. They also have big portraits of different celebrities. I had purchased a very unique one of a natural Marylin Monroe. I have never seen one like it. They always have new things. read more

You're driving on the moon, no wait you're driving in central California, and all you've seen is dry dusty Hills for miles, when all of a sudden this place starts advertising itself with multiple signs. If you're like me, you feel compelled to turn in, if for no other reason to just get a break from looking at the alien moonscape of South Central California. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very entertaining large store, featuring lots of different flavored pistachios and other nuts and snacks, as well as a full selection of different kinds of beverages, gifts, and even fudge and candies. There is also a clean restroom to the rear of the store, and it's also a gas station. Highly recommend a stop if you're in the area. read more

Honestly grateful for a place right off 46 for snacks and a restroom break. The place is huge! And cool inside which was great a hot day! Also, it features a diner where it was James Dean's last stop before his untimely departure. LOTS to look at. History stuff, canned and jarred goods, nuts, snacks, drinks, decor, gifts. A great place to stop if you're hungry, need fuel, a cold drink, etc. They have a very large selection of dried fruits and nuts, all of the best quality. The breakfast/lunch counter has killer egg salad and bacon sandwiches, burritos, hamburgers and assorted sandwiches. We always stop here on our way to the valley for breakfast or lunch. We also stock up on almonds - they have a large selection of different flavors, something for everyone. We also buy pistachios, cashews and peanuts. We buy dried apricots and dried cantaloupe. I have passed by here for years and never stopped, but finally did on our way back from Monterey, to finally partake in the location that James Dean made his last stop. The actual convenience part of the store is only about a 1/4 of the entire building, but I had no idea everything else the building had inside. The James Dean memorial part of the store could be done a lot better as the newspapers really need to be framed and behind glass, but it was still fun to see and read. There is also a 50s soccer type restaurant inside as well as a general store / flea market area. You can basically get just about anything you would want for your road trip. read more

Loved stopping here on my way to San Francisco. It's kind of exactly what all the other positive reviews say; I sorta retraced James Dean's steps from Sherman Oaks to Salinas and I'm glad this place keeps his memory alive. It's a perfect place to take a quick break when you're on the road. Had some fudge and it was really good. They gave free samples too. I liked reading the articles on the wall. James Dean's Last Stop This was a cool detour while we were looking for a gas station to fill up. Actually, this was not the intended gas station we wanted to go to because gas prices here are through the roof. There was a cheaper one up the road but I wanted to take a look inside the store. That huge wooden cut out of James Dean was what really got me. On the other sign was a scrolling digital signage display and I caught the words "James Dean's Last Stop" on the screen. Inside is a store that sold a potpourri of stuff. In the back is a "Forever Young" Restaurant (closed at the time) and across the way is the "East of Eden" Fudge Factory. Totally unrelated to James Dean, there is a very old carriage-looking buggy on display with a little history about The Dust Bowl Migration. It was a mass exodus as millions moved out from the Plains states to California. The buggy was filled with "stuff." In my mind I guess they just filled their car with whatever they can bring and upped and left. I wish I had more time to look around but we were on a schedule so I ended up just buying a souvenir photo book of James Dean's last 85 days before the unfortunate car crash that took his life. If it wasn't for the macabre notoriety it has as being James Dean's last stop before his fatal crash; something they blatantly advertise. It's nothing more than a big truck stop. Their store area is huge and they advertise local nuts and other agricultural products but when I walked in, the shelves for local goods were pretty sparse. They have a fast food counter in the back that's seen better days and a fudge shop that was also closed. I usually don't have to get gas at this point on my trip and now that I've been stopped by I don't really see the need to come back. read more

It's been over 67 years since James Dean died almost thirty miles due west on Hwy 46, but this remote gas station and souvenir and snack shop was the last place he stopped at before he crashed his Porsche 550 Spyder into an oncoming Ford sedan. He was just 24 years old and made three movies, all of which became classics after his death, so his legacy was assured. Jamie W. and I were leaving Paso Robles for LA when we saw the huge cut-out of Jimmy in his classic red jacket on the corner of the Paso Robles and West Side Highways (photo: https://bit.ly/3hxq4oa). I convinced Jamie to stop the car so I could take a photo. There was another cut-out of Jimmy's face which required another selfie (photo: https://bit.ly/3PBlzFs), but then the shop was closed because it was Thanksgiving. Oh well. Several days later, we drove back from LA to Monterey when we decided to take the same route from the I-5 to 101. Of course, we decided to go inside the shop for a look-see. All the James Dean paraphernalia was relegated to the back wall, mostly through vintage posters and glossies. Had I not gone to the restroom, I would've missed the most interesting archival pieces. Had a very disappointing experience at this gas station. The attendant didn't ring up my sale at all and just took my cash without giving me a receipt. When I asked about it, he was rude and dismissive. I left feeling like something shady had happened. It's unacceptable to be treated like that. My go-to stop on roadtrips. They always have clean restrooms and a tasty variety of homemade and unique goods. The fudge is amazing, and the other treats I've tried have been great as well. It's a large store, and the bathrooms are all the way at the back, so keep that in mind if you have limited mobility. read more

I have given this stop a five star for their incredible fudge and chocolate shop! Wow! Some of the best fresh confectioneries! We bought caramel, marshmallow, peanut butter, chocolate fudge, and caramel macadamia clusters. They did not disappoint. Restrooms available in the back. In a word, Overpriced. Lots of nuts and candy, sauces, jams, snacks, typical road side stop for gas and snacks, everything was at the high end of similar items at other similar stops along the highway, shop was a mess with pallets of merchandise on the floor, employees locker room open onto sales floor was also a mess. Resturant was closed on a Sunday afternoon. Lack of caring is obvious, best to avoid. read more

Best dark chocolate caramel sea salt fudge. I picked up a couple pounds every month on my way to the coast.

Stopped by for something sweet. The people are helpful and the sweets are also super delicious. I was able to get several things suck has pistachio bark and peanut butter cup. They also have a sugar free option. Would definitely come back again and try pistachios and almonds. read more

If you head to the back of the store is the Forever Young diner and where they make homemade fudge. We grabbed some fudge for the drive. If you buy one pound you get half a pound for free, $15.99. Restrooms all the way in the back are for customers only. Had a great drive to the beach, heading home down at Blackwells Corner, well needless to say I have to go to the bathroom . We stop and I run in to go to the bathroom, if anyone has been there it's huge, there must be 10 people in front of me and 7 of them little girls. Well the bathroom was being cleaned , the staff member shut down three of the five stalls to clean, ( Saturday arounf 4pm) as we waited the line grew to about 20 peeps, and yet not one stall has opened . I yelled out to the staff member that was cleaning the stalls and told her she needs to hurry up because we have a huge line out here and most are children, she turned and said "It's not my problem", I told her qit will be if we all decide to pop a squat here or these little girls go to the mens bathroom so they won't pee there pants. She looked at me again and proceeded to say, " It's not her problem", my goodness what has this society come to? No compassion, no customer service. read more

Funky gas station/rest stop/country store on the way to Paso Robles. Lots of varieties of fresh nuts, and homemade salsas, sauces, olives, jams, and other produce. They also sell assorted tchotchkes, snack food items, fudge, and things like sandwiches. It's a great pit stop when we drive up from LA. A fun place to visit, and we always pick up some goodies. read more

What an rather large yet odd gas station store in the middle of no where. It seemed like the biggest rest stop between the valley and the hwy 1 coastline drive. They have such a WIDE selection of foods, dried fruits, candies, nuts souvenirs, decorative items and fudge! they were offering free fudge samples which is incentivizing. The fudge counter is all the way in the back so you have to navigate through the entire store It was well stocked and neat, but the price point seemed expensive. A lot of (what seems to be ) locally made and packaged foods like almonds. We bought a bag just cause, but the price/lb was expensive compared to typically price. After the visit I learned that blackwells is known for the last stop of James Dean before his fatal crash- that's why there was soooooo much Jame Deans stuff there. I like this place. Staff are happy to help you check out as quickly as possible, there are clean restrooms and lots and lots of local products. We always stop here on our way to Paso from Bako. Handy, visible and right on the corner with gas stations to boot. A zillion snacks and drinks to choose from. My fave thing about this place is all of the hot sauces. I would say I collect them but of course they expire, and I use them daily so I buy 2-3 at a time. Neat BBQ sauces too. I have bought some as gifts before. Dec 2018 after Xmas, so many of the sauces are now gone and said to be on reorder. Anxious for them to be restocked for my next visit. I have not been tempted to use the lunch counter but there is one. I am a true rock star if I buy hubby a 50 cent Honey Bun snack on my way out. (He loves them) A large place with lots of room to browse that I feel has more history than meets the eye. read more

Lost Hills does not have any hills that I saw. Yet it has this MASSIVE store and gas station. This is the epitome of middle of no where and a crazy cultural bit of Americana. The signs plead for you to buy something. I have never seen more bags of nuts with so many flavors. There is a huge diner--and no one was eating there. They sell fudge at a fudge counter. Lots of James Dean memorabilia and lots of crappy gift items too. Bathrooms very clean. As commanded, I bought a bag of almonds with Chili and lemon flavor. Quite tasty. I came across this place while getting lost coming home. It's a gas station where the pumps are 24 hours. When you enter the building the business is divided into sections. There is the store in the front which consists of locally made food products, drinks, and a gift shop. In the back of the building is a fudge shop and restaurant. The restaurant and restrooms are currently closed. FYI the restrooms are only for paying customers. read more

This was a interesting place to stop on Highway 46 coming back from Paso. Getting in there was a little bit of a pain and they probably did this to keep people from crashing. You can enter on one side of the parking lot and not really off Highway 46. The place itself has the usual and some local products, to me those looked a little dodgy so I stayed away from them. There isn't a lot between LA and Carmel, but one unexpected find was a quick gas stop at Blackwell's Corner General Store in Lost Hills. My husband noticed the nearly empty gas station, which couldn't be any further in the middle of nowhere! Plus, it makes a great bathroom break! But what we soon found out (right near the bathrooms!) is that this is the last spot where James Dean was seen alive. He infamously crashed his car in 1955 right near this spot. Amazingly, James Dean only starred in 3 films but clearly the legend lives on. Head to the back of the store to check out all the memorabilia. Blackwell's Corner and General Store, makes a great stop just 2.5 hours from Los Angeles along the way to Carmel. I love just stumbling upon things like this - checking out the memorabilia at the back of the general store. But we're also productive -- and got some gas and junk food snacks! read more
