How lucky to counts Blacks members amongst my friends, so I occasionally enjoy the privilege of being taken to this lovely place. As all around it the old Soho is crumbling, with its seedy hangouts being replaced by yet another faceless bar or burger brand, it is comforting to know Blacks is still Blacks. The beautiful townhouse hasn't changed much over the years and doesn't follow the formula of other members clubs. Yet despite its dark walls and old fashioned paintings it is anything but stuffy, and certainly no old man's club. The whole point of any members club is exclusivity - why else would you pay an astronomic sum for the chance of the odd late night drink!? Still, membership to Blacks seems to be about more than just being affluent and the website doesn't give away the secret of selection. Perhaps no longer the misfits of its early days in the 18th centure, but certainly a good mix of interesting folk which gives each visit a bit of an edge. Erm, no. I went with two members and a group of 6-7 others, and in trying to get an exception to the 2-guests-per-member rule (at 4pm, nonetheless) was treated with a high degree of snark from their host/front-door man. The manager was courteous, but this particular gentleman was, to put it politely, crass. Could be a great place, and it's certainly a gorgeous space, but any club with the lack of sense to put this act front and center is one I want nothing to do with. read more

Very fun! It reminds me of a fraternity house here in the USA - shabby chic in the oh so cool neighborhood in SOHO. My expectations of the London club were for a posh, stuffy locale but that couldn't have been further from reality. The various place to sit and hang out were relaxed and open. We went with a friend - a member. The bartender knows his way around the bar - very nice cocktails served to order. I was intrigued by the gentleman all in white, including the white tux and sunglasses. We weren't sure of his role but he was fun to watch as he marched around, ensuring that everything was taken care of. read more

Not sleek. Black's slows the pace and turns back the clock (all the way to the Georgian era). I recently visited this private club and was really impressed with the food, wine, furnishings, atmo ... Beside and above the fray of Soho. Civilized. Relaxed. I was as impressed (if not more) with how friendly and polite the members I met were. Warm smiles from complete strangers? At a members club? In London? I've to enough clubs around town to know this is not always the case! I'd be glad to go back. read more

At the end of a long, grueling week toiling in the media salt mines this place often beckons with its siren call of ... peace and quiet. When most of Soho's pubs are heaving with drunks and the paths are cluttered with groups of smokers shivering in the cold Black's is an oasis of calm where one can sit down with friends and cruise through a few bottles of wine whilst collapsed on their large, welcoming seats. I've only eaten here once but when I did the food (a deliciously rare steak) was excellent. read more

This members club is one of the least pretentious places I've been, despite the initial reaction I had to the selective entry. The food is reasonably priced and everyone is very friendly. I attended an event held by Georgia May Jagger for London Fashion Week last spring and it was lovely. The whole place was decorated down to the soap dispensers! read more

This place had so much character, once a safe haven from the modern world but no more! Under the new ownership we have the mobile phone ban lifted, the lounge area has gone (so no more beautiful sofas), the beautiful basement bar is deserted and now a semi building site and new furniture (like that brown leather sofa) looks more at home in DFS than a beautiful 18th century town house. Im really struggling to see whats unique and justifies the membership fee here. read more
