This wasn't the most impressive place to see Australian wildlife after visiting Cleland Wildlife Park in Adelaide. I had a really hard time spotting the one koala bear in the section with birds. I did see various birds. I saw a kangaroo family. Altogether, it would be nice if they had more of the animals and a little bit more variety. It's a large park with a large area of walking trails, but we did not have time for that. There's only two main sections for viewing animals. The area with birds has a unique setup with different sections to walk through. They have a decent gift booth. It was a nice visit.
It's amazing that this place is free! (minus parking cost). It's like a mini zoo, with many animals to see like a wombat, wallabies, reptiles, and many birds. It was fun for us and the kids to walk on the one-way boardwalk and see all the different animals exhibits. Then there's a big grassy area, duck pond, cafe and fun playground. Highly recommend!! read more
Blackbutt Reserve is a nature preserve that is free to the public. During my visit I was very impressed at how well maintained the grounds are kept, how well the animals are cared for and how accessible the parking was. You can almost see as many animals at a park like this as you would in a typical zoo. We saw wallabies, koalas, peacocks, various birds and reptiles as well as wombats. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone local or from afar. You cannot go wrong here. read more
This is a great spot to bring your family for a barbecue. Free BBQ's. Plenty of things to do for the kids and gives the parents time to relax. If you have foreign guests they'll be able to see Aussie animals and well as touch them. There's native Australian birds too. A few hiking trails around to wear out those with extra energy and a well equipped playground for the kids. My little nephew loves it. Worth the visit. Good clean facilities. read more

One of the most popular spots in Newcastle to visit on weekends. Great for picnics and parties. BBQ's on site. Covered seating areas that can be reserved. Kiosk near playground. I love kicking a football or soccer ball on the flat grassed area. Walking tracks, wildlife enclosures and free roaming peacocks and bush turkeys. The major downside of Blackbutt as a result of its popularity is the lack of parking. Be prepared to wait or get there very early. It is $4 per hour so unless you are strict with the time you wish to spend there you might as well pay $12 and be covered for the entire day. read more

Blackbutt is a beautiful place to visit while in Newcastle. Be sure to see the native animals and birds if you are from overseas! Feed the wallabies and see the koalas! It is free to visit, you just have to pay for parking and for any "extras" like critter food. A great place for families. read more

Named after Eucalyptus pilularis, the Blackbutt tree, bushwalkers can take any of nine trails in this nature-filled reserve. The popular walks include the 1.5-kilometer Rainforest Walk, which passes by a natural creek and a gully, as well as the 1.6-kilometer Forest Way Walk, which gives walkers a unique viewpoint of the entire reserve, passing through both wet and dry forests. While taking these walks, you might see some multi-award winning wildlife exhibits with signages that teach visitors about the species they've observed. Great place for the whole family. Lots of wildlife. Picnic area including BBQs. Play equipment for the kids. The only down side is they charge to park there but don't let this deter you, as it's a fun day out for the whole family. Also great for parties and get togethers. read more

One of the benefits of living in Newcastle! I'm not sure if other places have a free reserve that Council provides but this one is for the books. A great place for the family and a lovely place for any visitors we have too. Sometimes we just have a picnic and the kids play on the playground, other times the hiking trails are great. Enjoy seeing the animals on display too. read more
