They have a variety of kayaks, canoes, inflatable tubes, paddle boards, and paddle boats for rental. Follow the signs to the main Kickapoo office. We chose our tubes and set sail! The driver loaded them up and drove us 5 minutes to our float sight, the beautiful middle fork of the vermilion river, the first river in Illinois listed under the National Scenic River register! You could see the bottom in most spots. Perfect for rock hounding, catching some rays, and just relaxing in nature. There were a couple parts where there were "mini" rapids which were fun and sped you up a little bit! After we were done, we ended near the entrance of the Kickapoo office. We were ready for some food so we went inside the building with the restrooms on the side, Park Bistro. Everything on the menu looked great, but my husband and I decided to order catfish sandwiches, since they are rarely offered at places in the northeast. The cook was very friendly and welcoming! Our food was ready in 10 minutes. We definitely would love to visit this recreational area again! Great place for hiking, biking, playing in the water, and enjoying nature.

If your ear plugs aren't fully in, you won't hear any freedom for the rest of the day. I haven't pulled a trigger in almost 10 years, and before that, was before I got out of the army in 99. So, I was a tad rusty. I still remember the 4 fundamentals of firing (position, aiming, breath control, trigger squeeze) because they drill that into you in the army. Or at least, I allowed it to be drilled into me (kevin couldn't remember). Shooting my friends 45 was sort of fun. It had been so long, I was like "how do I move the slide forward?". First I had to put 5 bullets onto a paper. yay, I can hit a piece of paper from 10 yards out! Then my buddy had a rifle, so we had to put 5 holes in a piece of paper from like 15 yards out. At least I think what's how far it was. The first pull on the trigger of the rifle I immediately remember the entire experience. It wasn't until that whiff of gunpowder and the spent case flying over my head (left handed shooter), that I was reminded of army days. As we got done shooting, and my guys put their guns away, we walked back out to pay, and I sounded off with "No Brass, No Ammo Drill Sergeant!" and the day was complete.

Basically this establishment is run by the Champaign Park District. They're open in the summer for families to stop and see farm life (horses, sheep, llamas, ponies, cows, geese, goats, pigs, bulls, chicken, koi fish, turtles, bunnies). They even have a petting zoo and little playground for the kiddos. The petting zoo is only open from 3-5 pm though. It's not that big but neither is Champaign. When I went last (many, many years ago) it was free and accepted donations. They also doa summer program for kids who learn how to run a farm and help take care of the animals. I did this for a few years when I was a child and it was really, really fun.... Except for when you had to feed the bulls and you felt like you were walking to your death, clinging that hay to your chest while the volunteer leaders assured you it was okay but just make sure not to run away or make any sudden movements... Make sure to bring close-toed shoes, the won't let you in without them. This place may have changed SIGNIFICANTLY since I've been there last (which was in the 90's..) but I remember it being a wonderful summer spot as a kid.

The kids get a bib with a number and the parents get a bib with the same number and "parent" on it as well. They will not release your child unless you are there and the numbers match. This was greatly enforced and being a first time parent at this I really appreciated everything and everyone involved with this event. They made sure the kids were safe at all times. Picking up the packet was really easy. Parking was great. The kids had a great time and what a rush it was for them to run into the stadium. My daughter enjoyed it so much that she wants to do the 5k next year. I paid $12 for my daughter to enter. She got a t-shirt, a string back pack and some coupons and they served mac and cheese, cookies, fruit gushers and water at the end of the race. It was so worth the money. It was really a great experience. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because of the wait between ages. We got rained on too but that is not their fault. And looking back on it the reason they took so long in between races was because they were making sure all the kids were accounted for. Really a good time and experience.
