Crab cakes dinner ($27.65) 5.29.2025
Jenni M.

Blackbeards' Restaurant was yet another surprising, unexpected stop in South Padre, TX. This wasn't our first choice, but another restaurant moved and was not yet open at their new location. Parking was ample, free, and easy. We were greeted and seated right away. Our waitress was great. The food was not super memorable, but I remember not having any complaints plus everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. They served 3 large groups around us rather efficiently too. I heard no grumblings from any party, so this place seems promising for large parties. Here's what we opted for: + Baja Shrimp Tacos ($17.75 + Crab Cakes w/ Cilantro Rice w/ a dinner salad ($27.65) + Lemonade ($3.50) + Coffee ($3.25) + Pina-Mango ($8.25) RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4 | Service: 5 | Ambiance: 4 | Price: 4

Here in South Padre Island my mom and I stopped in Blackbeard's for lunch. At first I was nervous since I am deathly allergic to shellfish. Our really good waiter assured me that it was safe to eat here. They cook everything in sections like fish in one section, steak in another, etc. I had the most delicious chicken fried chicken ever, the coleslaw was creamy and crunchy, and the onion rings are top notch! The atmosphere is spacious and clean with pictures of monster fish catches. If you're in South Padre Island and hungry, I highly recommend Blackbeard's!

I've been wanting to come to Blackbeards every time on the island but it's usually packed. We came in during a weekday lunch time and it wasn't very busy. We were seated as soon as we got in and our server was very friendly. I got the calamari as an app and then the oysters .... which were super fresh and the crab cakes were perfect!! The place is a lot of fun with a lot of fun and can get noisy on a busy day. They have a nice large patio with lots of seating as well.

After a beach photo shoot we headed over to Blackbeard's for drinks and a late dinner. Wait was less than thirty minutes on a Friday night in May. Ample parking at that time. We ordered drinks at outside bar that were tart top shelf margs and cold beer. We had a spacious table and Jose as our server. He was awesome! Great recommendations. Very friendly. Checked on us often. Ww started with chips salsa guacamole and queso. All nice and fresh We ordered crab cakes, Atlantic salmon and Buffalo chicken sandwich. We all enjoyed our meals thoroughly. Meals came with sides. We enjoyed the grilled zucchini. Side salad was a little plain but good. The dinner rolls that came with meals was really tasty. Oh and the lemons blueberry cheesecake. I'll be thinking about that one for months to come So glad we found this place.

I had lunch here. The food was delicious and plentiful. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I had the fish tacos. They were amazing. In addition I received a huge bowl of rice and a bowl of beans. You can't beat the quality, quantity, or price. I'd definitely return.

We had a HUGE group. 5 tables, 40 people, and nearly 40 pounds of fish caught this morning. Hector was our server and was amazing keeping up with us. (Hey Boss, Hector needs a raise!) We still cant figure out how the kitchen sent out at least 7 platters of blackened, fried, and grilled fish. It was presented beautifully, and came to our tables hot and perfectly cooked. Sides and drinks were yummy too. If you catch fish on a local charter, bring your filets here for dinner!

I wasn't expecting much based on the rating, but our food was excellent. Relatively short wait despite the lively atmosphere and full restaurant Our waitress, Esmeralda, was awesome and very attentive. We ordered the jalapeno cheese poppers (massive), onion rings (massive), fried calamari (so good), bourbon salmon (amazing), baked snapper (melt in your mouth good, and mahi mahi tacos (very tasty). I would definitely recommend and go back.

Great music, lots of dancing and wonderful Winter Texans in the afternoon. We arrive to the hotel/bar and was a little confused where the bar was. Being called the upper deck we thought maybe it was upstairs but quickly ran into someone that guided us to the back door of it. You go in and it was decorated so cute for Christmas. Everything had Christmas wrapping paper on it! They have great well drink specials for $3.50. Really good strong pours. We quickly got our drinks and went outside where we heard the music was going on. They have several tables outback, and every one of them was full. It looked like all these Winter Texans were having such a wonderful time dancing to the music and living life to the fullest. There was a table with a couple empty chairs, and one of the guys came over and offered for us to sit with them. We met a lovely couple and stayed there until 6 o'clock when the music ended. The bar quickly emptied out. It did look like another band was coming in for a second round but we decided to go ahead and leave and head back to the hotel. We will definitely be back!

Wanted to really like this place, but it didn't go well unfortunately…read more Menu has a lot to offer and some of their prices are a little steep. Browsed the menu & ended up just getting their "tossed salad". I asked what was on it which was; sliced tomato, shredded carrot, red onion & cucumber. Opted out of the cucumber & requested two blue cheese dressings. My husband ordered their cheeseburger dressed with pepper jack cheese. My salad arrived fairly quickly & it was on a flat plate with a weak portion for $7.75. The two dressings were in taco cups over flowing with a hefty amount of fresh blue cheese crumbles packed on top. Super disappointed with not only the presentation, the cost & never being asked if I wanted my salad prior or when my husband received his meal. I ended up pushing it to the side & was waiting for our waitress to return to not only ask if my husband would like another beer, but to also provide the option of not eating that ridiculous amount of rabbit food-getting a refund OR to bring out more lettuce & ask to please just bring out standard blue cheese dressing without the added amount of crumbled cheese. We don't see our server for sometime, so I went to the hostess asking if she were also the manager which she stated she wasn't & that they were at the bar. That's when our server came up behind me & asked if there was a problem. I explained the situation to her, then she tells me that this dressing is always served this way and that, that is what blue cheese dressing is! She seemed confused about the crumbles & was almost trying to mock me. I've worked in the food industry & know how these product come into the restaurants. Blue cheese dressing does have blue cheese "chucks" within the original recipe. If you are doing things differently then that, it should stand out more on their menu as "homemade" and again expressed by the server, but she made it as if I were just suppose to know their process. It's salad dressing, it shouldn't be this difficult! LOL After this fiasco, they brought more salad and a watered down milky dressing that had zero flavor and zero cheese along with sliced cucumber?! The consistency was like milk. It was running, bland, NO blended cheese in the base-it definitely wasn't blue cheese dressing! WT?! This ALL transpired while my husband was still waiting on his burger & fries . About another 15 minutes goes by, I finally had to just start in on the bland salad. My husband's beer still sat empty & was never told when his burger would be served the few times are server swung by regarding my order issues. 20 minutes later, she comes by again & he was asked if it was cheddar cheese & he said, "no it was pepper jack". A total of 30 minutes he waited for a very rare burger, cold fries & FINALLY another beer! Terrible service and food wasn't very good either.

Parking is pretty abundant outfront and the place is very clean with a nice, open layout. The outdoor patio is dog friendly which is a plus since we never forget our furry friend. Onto the food, we ordered corn dogs with a side of french fries and their Hawaiian BBQ chicken wrap. Their corn dogs were solid as were the fries. It came out extremely hot which made it a bit difficult to eat but you can never really complain about a hot meal at the end of the day. As for the Hawaiian BBQ chicken wrap, it was absolutely fantastic. We were actually a bit blown away by how good it was since our food experience in SPI to that point was not very good, but this was downright great from the chicken to the tortilla and everything in between. On the drinks side, we ordered three: a piña colada, mango daiquiri, and banana foster's colada. All of the drinks were okay, nothing too special to note other than the fact that they didn't really feel like they had that much alcohol in them. To some that can be a good thing, but on these they just felt like they were a light pour more than so sweet you can't taste it. Other than that, our experience here at Tequila Sunset was great. Drinks were decent, food was great, and what a view. We will definitely be back whenever we're in the area.

They sat us upstairs in what is clearly a former sports bar; giant LED wall on one side, that kind of thing. This location used to be Parrot Eyes, which was a dive. Captain's Cove is not a dive. Someone spent real money in here and it shows. The ahi tacos were a strong start. Better than the hamachi crisp, which was fine but less interesting. Oysters were decent - all small variants, nothing remarkable, but they were fresh and properly handled. Good enough. The redfish was where things got quiet. Well prepared, properly cooked, but the fish itself and the sauce both tasted like not much. It's not that anything was wrong, it just had nothing to say. My wife's mushroom risotto, on the other hand, had plenty to say. Strong flavors, grilled shrimp cooked exactly right. That was the best plate at the table. Two of our friends ordered the ribeye. It's marinated in a soy glaze, and you're going to taste that. If you're expecting a traditional sear with a real crust on the outside, you're not getting it here, the exterior was missing that distinct char. The inside was fine. The mac and cheese, though, was legitimately good, and I say that as someone who doesn't usually bother with mac and cheese at a seafood restaurant. Drinks are priced like they know you're on an island with limited options. They are, in fact, worth it. We came out around $100 a head, which felt steep until I thought about it for a second. Anywhere else, this is a solid 4-star dinner. Within the context of South Padre Island and what's actually available out there, it earns five. Would come back.

Despite the raving reviews, we were really disappointed with Captain's Cove. Nice ambiance, and…read moreservice was great (until the end, read on!). Michael was our server, excellent service, for the most part! We had minimal drinks, but they serve Saratoga bottled water, which was a definite plus! First course was the crudo and Hamachi crisp. Both dishes were served within 2 minutes of ordering, so not "fresh, made to order." The Hamachi crisp was delicious, the star of the evening. The crudo was served frigid (fresh fish has little taste when served ice box cold!), the fish pieces were obviously pre-cut, and served in a soup of soy/ponzu. Great dish concept, a better presentation would be not so cold fish pieces on a cold plate, same bowl of the sauce on the side to be used for dipping. As currently presented, the fish was almost tasteless, overwhelmed by the sauce. No bueno! Round two was the fried oysters and the Kung Pao shishitos. The cornmeal batter on the oysters was overwhelming, again, rendering the oysters almost tasteless. The ratio of the oysters pieces was 75/25 batter to oyster. Use bigger oysters and a thinner batter! The shishito peppers were different, but good. Much thinner batter held up to the dipping sauce! Third course featured the poke tuna and the crispy fish tacos. Both were good... the drawback on this course was the fries, it's tasted like they added sugar to the spice mix on the fries, weird having "sweet" regular fries. We would have preferred traditional simple salt! We also had an order of the grilled broccolini ... not cooked enough to cut with a knife, and all the added nuts could not be picked up with a fork... ended up being "finger food!" Interesting concept, doesn't work in reality! Back to the service component... Michael presented the bill to us while we were still finishing the third course..., we spent a lot of $$ there, and are great tippers! We did not appreciate being rushed at the end. It may have been his last table, but the restaurant was open for another hour! (We were finished at 7:30pm on a Saturday night!). So, for all the online hype, we were disappointed for the reasons outlined above. Not sure we'll go back, so many other places to eat on SPI. Cannot recommend Captain's Cove!
