We came to Black Ball for the salami and the local hotel. Turns out the salami company should really be a destination. First, the local Formerly Black Ball Hilton serves the salami company's bangers, which are super delicious.
At the salami shop, you can pick up their various flavors of salami including those made of venison, with and without garlic, etc. I am not a fan of salami that has a lot of lactic acid. And Black Ball salami is not that type. It's not too hard or fatty, but enough to keep it from being too dry. We liked their salami a lot. While you can get packages of Black Ball salami in Greymouth. They don't carry all the flavors but you can get some of then. What you cannot get are the packs of salami odds and ends at the shop which works out as a deal. By odds and ends, I mean imperfect slices and some chunky ends. They all taste superb regardless of how it looks. Now I didn't think about taking pics of the packages we bought (venison and regular w/o garlic; both were super delicious) or noting how much of a deal they are. Suffice it to say that the salami is tasty and you should go to the source, if you can. The shop also sells locally made cheese. While we didn't try those, you should and let us all know about it.
Take a detour and check out the town, the hotel, and definitely the salami. read more
