A quaint museum for a quaint island…read more LEIHS is a relatively unheralded attraction caught within the throng of bars and restaurants that are prevalent throughout Put-in-Bay. We only came across it at the mention of our host, who had a few panoramic photos that were currently being featured at the museum. The Historical Society Museum sits back along an alley just off Perry Park. Your entrance fee will buy you a short film regarding the island and as much time as you like to browse the tightly packed museum. Within its confines you will find some great memorabilia highlighting some of South Bass's most prestigious buildings, people, and events. A revealing look into the islands rich past.

There is fascinating information about the entire area from history right up until right now. There is a scavenger hunt kids can do once a day every day all summer for a little candy treat and a prize. What a great way to get them into learning about the region. Go in the back room and read about the civil war time in the area. Then go over to Johnson's Island and visit the graves of the soldiers you just read about.

If you like taxidermy - this is your place to visit…read more I have three young children and have visited many nature centers. This is the first one I have paid to visit. At $10 a family it isn't much but we spent about a half hour here so not worth it. The inside has lots of taxidermy animals on display. The center is only partially geared towards the island itself. There are few live turtles, a small area with games for kids, and a bird watching area. This is a nice hiking trail behind the nature center. It is free to walk that area.

This was an interesting adventure! There were a lot of very fascinating topics in Ohio's history…read morethat you get to see and I'm happy I went. I don't think I was a major fan of it being a self-guided tour because there was just so much information to take in it was a bit overwhelming. But the positive side to it being a self-guided tour is that you can take your time to digest it all. I probably wouldn't take children under the age of 13 to this. Not because it's explicit or anything, but because these topics would be really hard to explain and I could see them getting bored quickly. I'm sure the tours schools do are different, but because it's completely self-guided, I don't see a 9 year old kid reading all the paragraphs about the living conditions of those who were less fortunate 100 years ago. They might like the wedding section with all the dresses, but it makes up maybe 1/4 of the whole tour. The staff was amazing! They were inviting and happy to answer any and all questions. I really would recommend going to see it at least once. I might go back later for the animal crossing tour!

Last time I was here was probably 30 years ago. I remember it as a house filled with…read moresemi-organized displays. This time I stopped in on a whim, needing to kill some time. Nowadays it is much more open and organized. The grounds are beautiful, and the outbuildings are kept up well. Inside, there are fewer artifacts but they are arranged by theme. Still, I feel like I missed a lot of history that used to be shown. It is more modern and kid-friendly, but less informative, if that makes sense. Plenty of history of the infirmary, not so much on the county and BG. A nice little museum, though, and worth a visit. I spent half an hour, and maybe they rotate stuff through so it would be worth going back. The theme this time was "collections," and there were beer cans, superhero toys, chairs, etc., etc., in separate rooms.

So many butterflies!…read more This was an option on our Perry's cave pass so we decided to give it a try. I have been in butterfly houses before but this one was definitely one of the best. You walk through the gift shop and the entrance to the butterfly house is in the back. It is a large greenhouse so on the day we went it was 95 degrees inside the building. About 5 to 10 degrees hotter than outside. Because of this we were only able to stay inside for 10 or 15 minutes because it was very hot. Upon entering there is a window that shows the butterfly hatching area. After that a greeter will fill you in on the rules of the butterfly house. After that you are welcome to walk around and explore the garden area. They have lots of plants to cater to butterflies and several water features. If you stand still the butterflies will land on you. Several benches are available to sit and enjoy the area. They also give you a great poster to identify the butterflies in the building. Not all of them are on the list but the greeter was very helpful and provided names for those we did not know. Great experience for any animal or nature lover!

When we arrived we were the first two there for the day, and he got up and expressed his appreciation that we came in and was eager to give us a tour around the facility. He previously worked on boats in the area during his career, so he knows his stuff! We started off watching the fifteen minute video that told us about the various important aspects of Lake Erie and Sandusky as a port, such as ice harvesting, fishing, sand dredging, and coal shipping. Then Ken showed us the boats in their collection, explaining the differences between the construction of each, followed by an entire room of outboard motors of various makes and horsepower! Then we returned to the main showroom to look at the exhibits. I especially liked the map that showed the channels throughout the years, the miniature model of the train-to-ship coal shipping station, and the depth charts of each Great Lake. You're sure to find something that interests you and learn something! They're also doing a solid job of putting in exhibits to interest children, such as building a small model boat, playing giant Battleship, learning to tie knots, and steering a boat around a projected screen of Lake Erie. A new exhibit is being added soon so kids can aim a canon at a screen and pretend to sink ships in the distance like in 1813! The restrooms are crisp and clean. The gift shop is somewhat small/limited, but I found a couple postcards to purchase. The volunteers help with the gift shop and admissions and are friendly.
