Was here for a quick gathering with some friends. Stunning views, especially around sunset. Parking is terrible, disorganized and people just end up squeezing into areas that aren't parking spots? That was the most stressful part of this visit. Staff in general was ok, they were present, but not friendly nor welcoming. Thankfully our wait staff member was awesome! I made sure that she received a generous gratuity, as I can't imagine working at this location. The mix of people in the restaurant was interesting. Some were treating the staff members so rudely, it was hard to ignore. The patrons made this visit not so great either. I had the clam dip and chip appetizer and it was DELICIOUS!!!! All of the food options my friends ordered looked amazing and they sounded very pleased with all of their food and the drink specials. I will go back, if I'm invited to attend an event here, as the food was great, the wait staff was great, and it was clean with a nice ambiance. read more

If you want a quintessential Maine summer sundowner experience with a nice stiff cocktail, this is the place! Think WASP country club, Cheever-era vibe: mallards on the wall prints, model ships and lighthouses in the lobby, a fireplace going in some dim room in the back somewhere in the middle of summer, young clean-cut seasonal staff, families spilling around the tables on the porch with children wearing matching outfits. Some of these people will be guests at the inn; others, like me, will be diners coming from the city (i.e. Portland) who've made reservations for dinner on the porch to catch the sunset. And the sunset was amazing! You have a perfect view out over the beach at Prouts Neck, and is there anything better than sitting in a deck chair with a cocktail and just feeling right there with it all? My friends and I were keeping it classic and all of us agreed that it was just like an old-school country club, where you can count on a good stiff drink no matter what. Also like an old-school country club, the food was . . . well, pretty terrible and overpriced. Again keeping it classic, we ordered shrimp cocktail, crab salad, and then steaks. The shrimp was a bit watery but otherwise OK; the crab salad also OK, just no real flavor. By then we'd all realized what we were in for, but nothing could have prepared us for the flagrant abuse these poor steaks had been put through. We all asked for medium rare: all three were dry, gray, tough, and required us to saw through them with our knives; there wasn't much sear on them but it seemed obvious they'd been quickly pan-seared much earlier and left under a heat lamp to dry for several hours. For these atrocities, we paid $49 each. Did we have a good time? Sure--as I mentioned, those drinks were nice and stiff, and it was a lovely August evening and the view was great! Crazy as it sounds I'd go there again for a drink and the view, but I'd plan on eating elsewhere. read more

A great little inn close to Portland, Maine. Beautiful view of the ocean from the restaurant and grounds. And I guess your room if you're lucky! Restaurant was decent, but expected a little more form a "luxury" inn. Some other small suggestions: Have enough towels and toilet paper available upfront for guests. If a room has a balcony and sleeps 3, then have 3 chairs on the balcony. More mirrors and hooks in the room would be ideal. One mirror and one hook is not enough. The chairs in the enclosed porch area are awkward and hard to move. read more

The waitstaff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food was good, except the crab cakes were deep-fried to oblivion. I wd expect Maine crab cakes not to be deep-fried? My biggest complaint is that they decided to mow the front lawn as soon as they opened for lunch???!!! This really spoiled the beautiful atmosphere that the Inn has to offer, and it was difficult to hear each other at the table. You wd think it wd be a no-brainer to mow the lawn mid-afternoon between the busy hours of dining!? read more

My sister in law made us reservations for our family at Black Point Inn. If you're visiting Maine I think there are more scenic and enjoyable spots to visit like Ogunquit Beach, Marginal Way, and Two Lights. This is a restaurant and hotel. Most of my family ordered lobster which came with corn. I ordered a green curry dish. My family members who ordered lobster with corn reported the lobster was good but the corn was not. The portions were small so they were still left wanting more. My green curry dish was tasteful, but again portion size was minuscule. It was just a handful of steamed vegetables with green curry on top. I was also left wanting something with more sustenance. There is not much to see within the vicinity but a hidden path at the other end of the parking lot overseeing some water. This place is more upscale and pricey. read more

We tried 6 things... - the brisket sandwich - amazing- 5 stars - it was perfect...the meat was tender, the bread was soft on the inside and crisp on the outside, the cheese and horseradish sauce was creamy and flavorful but not too sharp. - the homemade chips and clam dip. 4 stars. Delicious! The dip isn't clamy at all...more like a onion dip, but it is delicious none the less. - the grilled chicken panini - 3 stars - the arugula walnut pesto was delicious! - the tuna poke - 3 stars - a nice selection of accompaniments...seaweed salad, kimchi, cucumber salad, the rice was perfectly cooked, but I expected higher quality tuna, and more of it for the price. - the desserts - excellent! 5 stars. Worth a trip just for the dessert! They a wonderful selection (6 options) of seasonal desserts. See photo. We are local and we have always loved this establishment. A few weeks ago we had the most disappointing meals, service and cleanliness. Nothing like it's been in the past. I took my husband here for a nice dinner out, but sadly, it's not what it used to be. read more

I'll start by saying this review is only for our experience with cocktails from the restaurant bar on an August late afternoon and we didn't try the food, etc. Went during a non busy time before dinner crowd. They have seating on a smaller size deck with an amazing view of the water and Ferry beach. No one was seated there- except at a smaller area where a group was out there, which apparently that is the only place you can be on the deck when having just a drink without having a reservation for dinner for the other tables. We were told there was other seating with the view as well, but after ordering our drinks at the bar which took quite a while, we found that the area the hostess mentioned is only inside in a stuffy sitting room without any air. They do have about 10 Adirondack chairs on the lawn if available, but other than that we were pretty unimpressed with how many spots are outside given the size of the Black Point Inn and I'd recommend they consider adding a few small tables on the lawn or deck for those like us just getting a drink or two. We ordered a signature cocktail from their menu which was absolutely horrible with likely no alcohol in it and seemed to be missing one of the main ingredients and was taken back after a long wait at the bar and they swapped it for a glass of wine which was not good and tasted like it had been open for a while. I had an old fashioned which was ok. All in all the views are epic, it's a historic inn and all, but for us locals we're unlikely to go back as it was a complete hassle and way overpriced for the level of service and options for spots to hang out if just getting a drink or app. I expected overpriced, but overpriced with bad drinks and service left us feeling like we wasted our time. read more

We were excited to make our first trip to the Black point Inn meeting local friends for cocktails and appetizers. I called 10 days in advance, looking to secure a reservation and was told they do not take them. However they do take them. The staff is not welcoming. They appear as if they're looking down their nose at you. We were begrudgingly given a table on the deck, but we're told that they needed it back by 6:30 to which we agreed. The server was incredibly rude rushing us from the moment she came to the table, as if we had put her out by sitting at the table; mind you it was 5 PM we had an hour and a half before needing to depart to honor our agreement with the hostess. This is not worth the attitude. I am not really clear on how they can get away with treating people so rudely. We were staying at the Inn by the sea, which is far superior location wise. It's incredibly beautiful view and the staff is beyond gracious. I will never return to the Black point Inn. read more

So terrible. SO terrible. Very few options, settled for a lobster roll on a gf bun. Bun tasted like it had been frozen, and freezer burned, for over a year. The lobster was mushy and just BAD. Absolutely the worst meal I've had out in as long as I can remember, if not ever. My husband, non gf, ordered a burger which came out no sooner than 45 minutes after my roll. This was my first visit to the Black Point Inn. The inn itself is very warm and cozy, with multiple fireplaces in the lobby and restaurant area. It's all dark wood interior and makes you want to curl up with a hot tea and book. We didn't spend the night as it's only a 15 min drive from our house. But we wanted to try the restaurant. The restaurant was bright and airy with 3 areas, the inside restaurant area, a sun room area, and the outdoors deck. We ate inside as the temperatures were cooling off. Of note they will bring you blankets to wrap around you out on the deck which I think is a great touch. My one real complaint is that the menu was limited. The appetizers are mostly shellfish based or contain nuts (pesto), which if you are unfortunate enough to be allergic to either really limits what you can order. They could use more variety among the appetizers. The main course did have more of a variety but there were also limited options there. There were 4 of us, 3 of us ordered the steak frites and my husband ordered the duck. The steaks were cooked perfectly and do tender. The duck was overcooked but still had a lovely flavor. It came with a barley risotto which while it had an ok flavor was quite stodgy and you couldn't eat a lot of it. I did start with the french onion soup which I will say was perfect! The good: the location, grounds and inn are beautiful. The bad: The food, wait staff and basic management is not up to what you would expect from what initially appears to be a high-brow resort. Our server in the restaurant was inattentive, so we had to ask other employees to let her know we needed her; my oysters were very expensive and although some don't want Saltine crackers with their oysters, some do. They didn't have any. My lunch mate's open crab melt was lukewarm and it looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while as the cheese was somewhere between melted and half-chilled. No hand towels in the bathroom despite the sign on the door saying they sanitize frequently. Two gals at the front desk were chatting about something mundane and wanted to finish their thoughts before addressing us. Basically a very expensive visit to a mediocre resort that clearly needs management to step up and either train their staff or do the job themselves. read more

We were visiting for area the day on Oct. 17th and missed the cut off time on open table to make a reservation. We called and I spoke to Mary and told her we were about an hour away, did they availability for dinner? She said yes, reservations are slow (it was a Tuesday) and come on by. We drove 30 minutes out of the way, park and walk in and are told rudely that they're completely booked for the night. There were 3 tables with people. I was appalled at how rude the hostesses were and disappointed that they lied to my face. We will NEVER come back and am disappointed as we drove up was planning to book a future stay as the outside was beautiful. read more

I had the special, Baked Halibut with sea beans. It was delicious. The best halibut I've had to date.

The food. The view. The atmosphere. The overall experience. 5 stars. I eat here often over the summer. Whether I sit at the bar, inside dining room or my favorite location, the outside deck, the service is always great. Slow and reserved. Nobody is going to rush you. Take your time. Enjoy the experience. Great wine list. Lots of specialty drinks and beer too. The oysters are clean and flavorful. The clam chowder is not my favorite but it's flavorful. I've also had the crab cakes and the salads. All good. Main meals are excellent too. Lobster roll and fries. Lobster ravioli. Chicken and fettuccine. Baked cod. Awesome!! This is for the restaurant as well as the inn. However, I have not stayed here. Excellent, gracious, attentive service. We were a bit early for lunch/bloody Mary's on the veranda but the staff accommodated us w/ o attitude. The inn is perched atop a well manicured knoll overlooking the bay and gorgourse views of Old Orchard Beach. Chelse was our fabulous server. She promptly acquired our spicy amped up bloody Mary's which are accompanied by shrimp - perfect! The chopped salad was very crisp & tasty- good portion. The coconut cream pie was decadent & expertly prepared as was the rose creme brule by the in house pastry chef Mercedes who surprised us w an overview presentation right at our table. Beautiful interior. Nicely appointed. Classic upscale New England style. Can't wait to return for a long autumn weekend. read more

The sunset view is spectacular. The food is far from. Our server, Alek, was redeeming. Great service, and a local as well. We are locals so we frequent restaurants nearby, for a change from the amazing Portland restaurant options. We started with the Brussel Sprouts, excellent. Huge portion, so share. Next, a medium rare NY Strip was well done. The baked haddock with butter shrimp was a huge disappointment. How can a chef destroy our Maine haddock? We stayed here for a wedding and it was absolutely lovely. The staff is fantastic. They are extremely helpful and welcoming. The rooms are very quaint and well kept. The beds are just like the ones at the Marriott. I slept very well. The balcony's are cute with their wicker chairs. Adirondack chairs line the lawn. They have the perfect New England charm. You can see the ocean from both sides of the building. The wedding was beautiful too. Having the entire inn reserved for the wedding party was a fantastic idea. It was like a massive house party. There were warm fireplaces throughout. The food was excellent at the restaurant and so was the service. The cons were the fact that the restaurant was not always open. This is a 25 bedroom inn, not a hotel. You don't get room service. Once the evening is over the staff goes home and leaves you. We didn't have a car there so it made it difficult. Also, the toilet in the bathroom was extremely awkward. The toilet paper roll blocked it so you had to sit sideways. It was weird and extremely uncomfortable. For as much money as you pay a night you'd expect that not to be an issue. read more

I was so excited when I found this inn while hunting online for the perfect place to spend our 15th anniversary. I was able to call and get clarification on the different types of rooms they offered because I wanted the perfect one for our one night in Portland. Kyle answered all my questions in regards to the different types of rooms that were available before I booked online. I immediately booked the Commodores Chambers - king/deck/bay view B&B option (vs the Admirals Chambers king/deck/limited bay view)- and we were all set for our arrival the following week. The Inn was easy to find, parking was simple, carried our bags in and were instantly greeted at the front desk. Our room was ready and off we went to 302 for the evening. When we arrived the room was beautiful with all the decor, nice finishing touches throughout. We immediately went out on the deck to enjoy the view and a great bottle of wine that we had carried all the way from home for this evening only to be met by a pool view and a hint of bay through two buildings, my excitement instantly vanished as I was disappointed, not by the beauty, but by the fact that we had a partial view room and not the bay view we had booked. The room we booked was $325 plus taxes ($412) but we really got a room that should have been $75 less (plus taxes) because we did not received a bay view. The Inn on the whole, was amazing - the staff was friendly, the food was meh, the fireplace and other guests were great, I am just disappointed by what we booked and what we received and feel like we got tricked into ordering a more expensive room, with the attributes of the cheaper room. I received an email asking how our stay was and wrote them back with the above and not one peep out of them about the issue, shows me that they don't really care about the guest's stay and that expectation were met. read more

Not a great experience. We were so hopeful as we walked in the hotel and were greeted by several different staff members, welcoming us! Walked to the restaurant, where they almost seemed confused about us even having a reservation (not that we even needed one considering over half of the restaurant was empty). We had made the reservation on Open Table, and my husband called earlier in the day and requested a window table since it was my birthday and he wanted it to be special. They did not accommodate the window request- they told us we would have to wait an hour for a window table....after we had made a reservation for a window table. We were sat at a table and a server came over before we could even look at the drink menu, so we asked for a minute while we decided what we want. It was then 15 minutes until they came back for our drink order. We took the opportunity of having the server there to order our meals too. Drinks took another 15 minutes to arrive despite the restaurant and bar being mostly empty. The mussels appetizer was good- credit where credit is due. My husband had the steak which was OK, but nothing special; served with asparagus and bland mashed potatoes. I ordered the seafood fra diavolo (the seafood special for the night)- the moment it was served I was hit with a wave of fish stink. Before my first bite I could tell it was bad. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it, and also had my husband try it...it honestly tasted like one of the seafood items in it had gone bad. It was inedible. The server offered to replace it with something else, but by the time anything would come out (service was incredibly slow despite a full staff and nearly empty restaurant), my husband would have been fully done with his meal, so I declined and shared the dry steak with my husband. As a "courtesy" they removed my entree and offered a free dessert. Now, nothing in life is guaranteed beyond death and taxes, but absolutely an inedible dish should be, and free dessert on your birthday is pretty commonplace. So, I guess thank you for offering a free dessert for serving me past-due seafood, but you should be doing that anyway on a guest's birthday. We would have ordered the creme brulee, but some genius decided to take a perfect dessert and turn it vegan. Cashew creme brulee? No thanks. We ordered the blueberry pie. I thought I couldn't be disappointed by a Maine blueberry pie, but apparently I was wrong. Overall an underwhelming experience. read more

The waitress never asked how our meal was or attempted to fill our water glasses. Not that we would have known because we couldn't hear her. The Black Point Inn is as good as it gets. If you want to experience the perfect New England weekend, this is the place. The Inn sits on a bluff overlooking bays on two sides (it's situated in the 'adam's apple' area of Prouts Neck, if you will) so you have beautiful views on both sides. The staff treated my family and I like family of their own. You won't find nicer people. (I went to college in Maine, and you can pretty much say that about the State in general). There could be nothing more perfect than a cocktail on the Inn's veranda. Sitting in a rocking chair, staring out at the ocean, you're enjoying the same view that inspired so much of Winslow Homer's work. Speaking of Homer, you'll want to make sure to take the 45-minute 'cliff walk' that starts at the Inn and circles around the peninsula. It's a beautiful walk along the rocky coast that passes by the house where Winslow Homer lived for most of his life. The beds in the rooms are those 'dream beds' you find at fancy hotels. Perfect for a great night's sleep after a long day of hiking, golfing, etc. Speaking of golf, the guests get access to play golf (and tennis) at the Prouts Neck Country Club. The golf course is a short, tight affair that winds its way around the bay, affording the players great views of the water and Old Orchard Beach nearby. Meanwhile, the tennis courts are clay, so you can practice your Rafael Nadal French Open slides as you dig for a drop shot. If you want to get away for a weekend (or a week) in Maine, this is the place to be. read more

The Inn itself seems lovely, even though the property itself has decreased in size over the years along with the value (they used to wash your car for you!) The smell of the sea air is well worth the long drive from Boston. That said, something is definitely wrong with the food. I ordered the lobster roll with avocado on a brioche. The lobster came uncooked like clear liquidy seafood brains. I almost got sick! Sent back, version two was just okay -- somewhat mushy as well and the brioche was very salty. For dessert, we all ordered the ice cream and cookies. For nine dollars, we got tiny tiny teaspoon scoops (3) of ice cream and two stale little cookies that were also left out for free for guests later that afternoon. Overall a gross disappointment...total cost for 3 people for lunch was 100 dollars, without any drinks! And not only was the food gross but the service mediocre. read more

Ok - I decided to give the place another try. One of the most inviting features is the spectacular view. However - if you are sitting in the back room - the view is not accessible. When I was there earlier in the week - I was stuck in the back room because the hostess told me I didn't "request" a table with a view when I made my reservations. So I just called and requested a table for 4 for lunch ...and this time I requested a table with a view. I was told they could not guarantee me a table with a view. I can't sit there with a reservation if I haven't asked for the "table with a view" but if I ask for it ....they won't reserve it! I guess they would rather keep the tables empty. Don't bother coming in unless you're from a privileged walk of life. Made a reservation 6 weeks before we were there and told we could only sit on the porch if we came at 5 pm. Arrived at 4:50 pm to an empty restaurant. We were seated in the back. When I said I requested outside seating and that is why we are there at 5 pm the hostess told me they can't accommodate a party our size (9) on the porch and if I want a view sit on the side of the table where you can see outside. Was annoyed but had our dinner. We spent over 700 dollars on sub par food. When we went to the lawn to enjoy a drink after dinner I noticed that there was a party of 10 who had just arrived and was seated on the porch 2 hours after our arrival. When I went to the bathroom I mentioned something to the hostess who called over the manager. I said I wanted to provide feedback if they could give me the information for the food and beverage manager. The manager of the evening spoke down to me and was extremely rude cutting me off several times saying the party on the porch were customers for over 20 years. It is very clear unless you're a regular you are not valued and you should take your business elsewhere. When those customers of 20 years no longer are around they'll most likely have no more new customers. read more

Lovely spot, where, as a local, I've dined many times over 40 years. Went for dinner last night to meet an old friend staying at the inn. We began in the enclosed sunroom area where we sat at a small side table and opened the adjacent crank windows for ventilation, following measures to prevent virus transmission, only to have the young manager come in and ask that we close the windows, saying it interferes with their heating system. We we're then summoned by a young woman to follow her to our outside table. We were masked so obviously concerned about COVID. Yet she walked us right past an open door to the dining porch and into and through a crowded further room and out that door to the porch as well. When I rang up this morning and spoke to someone about these failures of COVID awareness, she was entirely defensive ("that's how we do things here"..."did you tell her you were concerned about COVID?", etc.). I told her I would not be back. The dinner food, by the way, was okay but not particularly good, though the server (Alex) was excellent. read more

Disregarded the fact that we had reservations and no effort or attempt to compensate. First time and time trying to go to this establishment.
