Another Exceptional Haircut!…read more SITREP Every time I walk down to the Saturday Midtown Farmers Market, I LOVE to stroll down J Street (usually a descending-trek from 26th down to 20th Streets, passing many many of my favorite businesses - Thai Noodle, Jungle Bird, Chicago Pizza, etc. etc. - including Take Care Barbershop! Here is where the stylist-barbers Bethany, Dean, Ethan, and Jules work wonders on my hair, and I'll always stick my head into the shop just to say "Howdy!" even if I'm not getting a cut that day. THE SETUP This establishment first landed on my radar because Dean was a stylist at Bottle & Barlow in the WAL Art complex down by 12th & R Streets. Dean then moved on to manage their offshoot operation Take Care up at 24th & J Streets (mere blocks from where I live now). A good thing too, since the barber operation down at Bottle & Barlow is now out of business. Dean has since introduced me to all of us talented colleagues Bethany, Ethan & Jules and in the last few years I've been privileged to have been submitted to the SCISSORS & RAZORS of each and every one of them! HAIRCUT TODAY! On THIS auspicious Farmers Market Day, I HAD been just focused on getting down there to get my array of colored peppers. So I stick my head into Take Care and do my "Howdy!" There's a blunt line across the back where the clippers stopped, and the sides don't fade into the top at all. Around the ears it's choppy with no smooth transition into the length I'm growing out. She didn't even work through my hair section by section like a proper cut just snipped around quickly. That's how you end up with choppy, uneven work and no flow, which is exactly what happened. I told her I style my hair back, I want to grow it out, and I specifically said I don't want a mushroom head. That should've been enough my hair is thick and dense, so any real barber hears that and knows to take weight out and shape it instead of leaving it bulky. She never asked how my hair behaves or how it falls, never looked at my hair type, and offered zero suggestions based on any of it. Just did the minimum. I tried explaining what I wanted a second time and she didn't seem to get it. Most of the appointment she seemed distracted, talking with the other barbers about drugs and parties instead of focusing on my cut. 10 minutes in the chair, $40. Growing my hair out doesn't mean I should get a low-effort cut with no blend. Unprofessional experience.
