There is a really nice…read moreinteractive exhibit about the nature and history of the area, with some excellent kid-friendly features like a cave to crawl through to find animal displays. It also features a nice large classroom space with activities and short films - on the day we visited, it was alternating between videos on elk and eagles. The restrooms were exceptionally clean and in good condition. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The park has a lot of things to explore - and keep your eyes peeled for elk as you go! There was a sighting of a large bull while we were there. There is a reservoir created by a dam that offers opportunities for boating and fishing, and the dam is a great place to get a good overlook of the area. They offer pontoon boat tours on Sundays during parts of the year, but unfortunately, ours got cancelled due to the boat needing a repair. Camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing areas are also available in the park. We really enjoyed our visit here!

Fortunately, I didn't! I stopped at the wild center- a gorgeous looking and clean facility with a very friendly staff. They rent out kayaks, canoes, life jackets, and bikes for a donation of "any amount". Later I spent 2 hours photographing all the verdant beauty of spring. Such a gorgeous park. Couldn't catch sighting of an elk or eagle, but saw lots of frogs in the creek. By the way, they lend out FREE skis if you want to cross country ski there. They have a long and beautiful path that any beginner can do!

We had a level site, one of their many electric sites, hence got to use our AC during a heatwave. The moderate tree cover was a nice bonus, and we had a Birdseye view of the playground. Perfect! There was no firewood left on site (honor system), but it was hot anyway. Oh well. We snuck in a little hiking before heading out, noticing all the trout in the dam pond and along the boardwalk trail. Whether it was the weekday or a covid closure, we didn't get to peek inside the CCC museum or the ranger station, but interpretive signs were outside the CCC where our little one got to take the decommissioned snowmobile for a (pretend) drive. Having separate swimming ponds and fishing is nice here too. The dump station is conveniently on your way out of the camping loops. It was a great family spot, and in Autumn the foliage is probably divine. If you can, take a couple nights here! Just bring your firewood/groceries/bear spray since there's no nearby amenities.

(They were calling for a possible tornado and we left early in order to get to the park before the bad wether.) We got there an hour early before check in and our cabin wasn't ready. Fine! We drove around and explored the park. There were booked pavilions with kids birthdays and a couple of graduations. We saw one park ranger with a tactical vest on and couldnt figure out why. We've NEVER seen rangers with those types of vests on especially since he was only walking around checking in with the kids birthday parties and graduations. Seemed totally excessive for the tactile gear. We came back 15 minutes before check in to the office thinking they would give us the key since the horrible weather started and they still told us to come back at 3. It was a torrential downpour and calling for a tornado we were forced to wait in our car for the 15 minutes. Went back in at 3 and they finally gave us our keys. We stayed at a cabin and the bathrooms definitely need a HUGE remodel. Once the rain stopped the ranger in the tacticle gear made it a point to come by our cabin and creep around. We thought that was weird. We stayed 4 nights and every single night the cabin beside our played very loud church music. It started at 6pm and went on until about 10 pm. Every. Single. Night. The whole cabin colony heard it. Quiet hours were to start at 9 pm. No one from the park office ever told them to stop playing their church music. We had no peace and were forced to listen to it for our entire trip every night we were at our cabin. We will not be back to this park. There are plenty of other state parks that are WAY more welcoming than this one.

Trough Creek Stare Park is a Park with a great combination of nature, history and fun! First, this place is absolutely historic. It was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but later settled by settlers. There they built a town that relied on the iron. At one point it produced 100 pounds of iron a day. In the 1940's part of Roosevelt's New Deal took place inter park. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed roads, trails and planted trees! It is even rumored that Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem "The Raven" based upon his time at Trough Creek Park. When it comes to hiking they have a nice amount of trails here with some very rocky and difficult. Along the hikes you can see the Balanced Rock, a boulder perched on a peak. Other natural attractions include the Copperas Rocks and wildlife including bald eagles, snakes and bears. Altogether, this is a beautiful park!

We were driving by when we saw the signage for the Gallitzin Tunnels. Having just come from the…read moreAllegheny Portage Railroad site, we appreciated the meaning of the tunnels and pulled over to check them out. There is some parking available nearby, and you can easily walk out on the side of the bridge facing the tunnel. There are even two small "windows" in the fencing on the bridge so that you can easily view and/or take pictures of the tunnels. There is a real caboose and a wooden play train available in the grassy area next to the parking. The caboose was closed at the time of our visit, but the wooden play train was fun. There was also signage indicating that a museum was available across the street, but it was outside of the posted hours so we did not see that. If you're interested in train history, this is a good stop!

After our visit to the Allegheny Portage NPS it seemed fitting to take a quick swing over to the…read morelandmark tunnels that put them out of business. Thankfully this place has lots of signage all around the area because it's off the beaten path in the middle of a residential area. We showed up right on time as within about two minutes we felt the rumble and saw the headlight of a train getting ready to emerge from the tunnel. We got to the overlook bridge just in time to catch an 80+ car NS trash train right as it came out of the tunnel. Have a sinus issue? Catch this baby from the bridge and you will be cured because not only does it stink as it's going beneath you but the smell continues to waft out of the tunnel for a good ten minutes after the train is long gone. It's sort of a....Gallitzin Dutch Oven. As for the museum, supposedly the hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm-5pm. We were there in the 4pm hour and nothing was open. The caboose still has hours listed from 2011 on the door so naturally that was also closed. It was disappointing that the caboose/museum were not open but it was still a fascinating look at some living history and we were thankful to see the tunnel in action as well.
