Stopping for a minute to read a historic marker is a great way to learn more about the history of an area. I have gained so much knowledge about Florida from these blue historical markers that can you find all around the state. I found this one next to the trail that winds through Lake Lily Park in Maitland.
This marker commemorates the Black Bear Trail, which takes its name from the habitat of the black bear it traverses through. The trail runs from Quebec, Canada to Miami, Florida and was organized by the Black Bear Trail, Inc., made up of Chamber of Commerce, boards of trade, and cities along the route in order to promote tourism in the southeast. Their mission was to provide a direct, safe route to historic and scenic sites. Black Bear Trail was a forerunner of the Appalachian Trail.
The portion of the trail that runs through Maitland along Highway 17-92 was marked in April, 1927. An insignia of a black bear painted on an orange oval background was placed on both sides of telephone polls along the road. Black Bear Trail joined the Dixie Highway at Lake Lily.
Marker Number F-524 was installed in 2004 by the City of Maitland and Florida Department of State. read more
