Bistrot Merizzi is just a charming, stunning gem from our stay Tirano.
Three tips = Apertivi with pizzas to order (doesn't look apparent at first), this spot is super close to the train so if you come into town, it's a great first stop, and on weekends they do special dishes with fresh porcini mushrooms.
When I travel, I like to max out my stay at a place - view everything, climb all the mountains, taste everything, visit everywhere...so it's saying something that while we had only three days in Tirano we ate here...three times.
The cafe itself is just charming - all white open farm-house chic kind of styling with classy placemats that make you think "ingredients," an apertivi that starts early and ends very late (offerings include a spread of olives, crackers and pizzas to order), and an incredibly nice staff across the board. Our waiter would take the time each night to explain the new specials - genuinely excited that we came back, genuinely excited that we wanted to taste more, to repeat our favorites, to ask for suggestions on wines.
The food itself is where my judgement always lies and while I can't express enough how welcoming the place feels from morning espresso to nighttime desserts, the food is all kinds of perfection. I ordered Pinnocheri, Ravioli, Sciatt and Hazelnut semifreddo across the nights. The seasoning and taste of the chef is just spectacular - The pinocheri seems basic, but then the missing bit of pepper is actually a garnish and makes the seasoning perfection. The Sciatt comes on a plate of Bressola and while the Sciatt remind me of a particularly sinful delight of deep fried cheese balls I used to sell at an amusement park stand (such a guilty pleasure), the bressola dressing up the plate was the best I had anywhere - again, seasoning was just spot on. My ravioli on another night was another spot-on delicious dish with every bite so flavorful, so fresh tasting. Meanwhile, my husband got the most glorious looking seafood spaghetti on night one with an incredibly genous quantity of seafood on it and a really perfectly seasoned broth that had me stealing the bread to sop up his broth while he wasn't looking.
Now to dessert.
I cannot emphasize enough how delicious the semifreddo was. I swore off gelato in one spoonful and ate this three nights in a row (yes, I got in extra runs every morning just dreaming of the semifreddo at night) - the caramel on the plate is dark and delicious, the texture of the dessert is just yum on yum and really I licked the plate. I licked the plate after the back of my spoon stopped showing success in scraping off any more bits of creamy / caramely hazelnutty goodness. The one night we tried to go to a different restaurant for dinner just to attempt to "hit the town" we even came back for dessert here.
Beautiful, charming place with such friendly people and options to eat from morning to late night - and above all some seriously delicious food seasoned to perfection! Loved this place! read more
