Le Caveau could easily be missed as it is situated on Skipton High Street down a flight of steps…read moreand under the Edinburgh Woolen Shop, However, if you walk past you will smell the delcious aromas eminating from it and maybe wonder from whence they came?! Originally a 16th century prison for sheep rustlers and criminals this is an unsual and evocative place to eat. Very small so booking is adviseable at the weekends or for a large group. The entrance is down a steep and narrow flight of stair and leads you into a vaulted brick built room. With Cosy tables and comfortable seating. Special menus, a la catre and light snakcs at lucnh are available, but I think if you want an unusal and interesting meal then the evenings are well worth a try. This is not a cheap restaurant, but you pay for what you get and here you get attention to detail, fine wines and an ecclectic French/ English menu.I liked it more when they erred on the side of French but it is still fantastic. Their beef is succulent,as is their Duck. The starters are scrummy and if you want a treat the bread and butter pudding ( not a dish I would ususlly have, is dreamy, not stodgy but light and spiced to perfection. A fantastic choice of wines which are not cheap but to accompany a meal which is comparable you cannot go wrong. They have a Christmas Menu, a la carte and specials. Light or substantial lunches are available and quite frankly their soup and a starter is a great lunch. The attention to detail is sublime and the owner will endeavour to do his best to accommodate all tastes. Nothing is to much trouble here. If you are claustropobic to do not visit as it is low ceilinged but the atmosphere is wonderful. Reasonable prices for a wonderful lunch experience, expect to pay more in the evening. Easy free parking in the evening on the high street. Also on Tuesday,Thursday and Sunday during the day. Worth it for the setting. Difficult access for wheelchairs users as this is down below street level and very narrow.

In the creaking wooden skeleton of what was once Just Books, a new wonder has emerged. Cafe 76 is…read morethe hero Skipton needs. With efficient, pleasant service, a takeaway sandwich shop on street level and cafe tables overlooking the historic High Street on the floor above, it's a winner from the off. Valiantly holding forth opposite Skipton's unwelcome Costa, and serving breakfasts all day (including the richest yummiest Eggs Benedict you could think of) as well as lunches ranging from sandwich to burger, drinks from fizz to milkshake, well. Let's just say it's in my good books (and that's even before we get onto the fact that a burger and fries is under £6). It's got more soul than Caffe Capo and less froth than the Three Sheep. The chicken burger isn't that cop out that people seem to keep going for lately: just sticking a chicken breast in a bun. It's battered (so much better) and tender like a giant goujon. The milkshakes are thick and creamy and FULL of flavour. The strawberry is really something else. So what about that fifth star? It's tricky to say what that last bit of greatness could be, but for some reason, fab though I think this place is, I haven't fallen head over heels for it. I think it just needs a dash more personality, some quirk or kook in the decor, a little less functional. Somewhere unmistakeably Cafe 76. But they've focused on the important things first, as any Costa-competitor must, and it is working, because I just keep coming back.
