Birmingham Opera Company's tag line is ' ...not what you expect from opera'. Which is about right. And I am very glad of this.
The first time I was introduced to their work I was roped into helping to steward a production by a friend of mine, and, initially reluctant, I was soon pretty hooked - as the singers appeared in and on barges under the arches of a bit of canal in a fairly derelict area of Birmingham - as they say, not what you'd expect from opera. So far, I've seen productions on canal boats, in factories, a disused bank and former chemical works. Somehow, opera suddenly becomes more interesting...
In a nutshell, its opera for normal people. If you don't fancy getting dressed up to the nines, going to a posh theatre and have people singing, statically, for hours on stage, but you do fancy experiencing a bit of high-quality, high art, then BOC may just be opera company that changes it all for you.
