They moved locations and are now incredibly difficult to find. In addition, the girl answering the phone will not answer your questions, help you find their location, and they clearly don't want loyal repeat customers coming back. I will be finding somewhere else to purchase things for my birds. Amazon has better customer service than what I have experienced with Bird Smart, and I had been a customer for six years. Absolutely recommend! I love this family-owned business. Everyone I spoke with was so nice, knowledgeable and helpful. The place is filthy! Dust in everything! All the toys and bowls were covered with dust. Pet food had old expiration dates. The poor birds in cages had no fresh air and are left for hours when the shop closes until the next day when it opens. Do not board your birds here! If you can't do better don't own these exotic creatures. Very cruel to keep birds in cages with poor air quality and nothing to do, it is like prison. Parrots live in jungles. Cockatoos should always be kept away from other species like Macaws who are highly susceptible to lung disease from Cockatoo dander or African Grey dander. Parrots should never be kept in a pet store. They are highly intelligent animals that need space, quality food and attention. Pet stores should ONLY sell product not animals! It was the worst pet store I have ever seen and I have seen many. read more

I adopted my sweet baby boy Cockatiel "Dexter" from Birdsmart this last January 2021. He is the most amazing little guy! They made it a very smooth and easy process for me to buy him. I was able to pick him out when he was a wee little baby and then waited a couple months or so for him to fully wean from being hand fed. I would call every week or two and they would give me updates on him. I was so excited to bring him home! Dexter has been sweet from day one and I can tell that they handled him quite a bit because he was very tame and sweet from the start. He is only @ 5 months old now but he's SO smart. He says "Peek-a-Boo", does the wolf whistle and is starting to sing songs. He LOVES head scratches and gets along amazingly with our other Cockatiel "Charlie" that is a female. He is already trying to woo her daily :) Birdsmart answered all of my questions when I was getting Dexter and they are always super quick to respond to my messages or calls. They also did an awesome job trimming both of my babies nails & wings when they were doing grooming in the shop. They also were able to do a DNA test on both of my Cockatiels which determined that Charlie was indeed a girl and Dexter indeed a boy. It was a super easy and quick process and was so fun finding out the results. I am VERY happy with my choice to get Dexter from them and I am super thankful for everything they did for my little guy before I brought him home! I'm sure I'll be back there again in the future! I love supporting locally owned businesses over big chain stores. Unfortunately, the poor service and awkward interactions with employees of this store made it a bad experience. The store is stacked wall to wall and in the middle of the store with cages upon cages of birds, 3 to 4 deep. Most of the cages have signs which say "not for sale" so I guess this means it is more of a bird boarding place than a retail shop. The employees said hello, then turned their backs away from us and didn't seem at all interested in having customers. When the lady finally asked if I needed help, I asked a few questions and got very unclear answers. She seemed agitated that I was there, asking questions, wanting to buy a bird or two. I don't require special treatment or hand-holding when I'm shopping, but I don't expect to feel unwelcome either. I shopped around afterwards and found that this store charges about 3 times more than other stores, so in a way I'm thankful they weren't friendly as I would have wasted some serious $$$ there. read more

My daughter and I came in today and the two young ladies working there could not have been more helpful! A young blonde girl (Julia? I think) helped us out and showed us a lot of friendly young birds and it was so fun. She was so knowledgeable and friendly. UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR BIRD TO DIE DO NOT FEED THEM THEIR FOOD!! I got my cockatiel here almost 5 years ago but ever since they got new staff it's been terrible. The cages there are not clean, the birds don't get out anymore, and their food has definitely got something in it. I quit buying my birds food here because their new staff are very rude but decided to get it a few days ago and not only did my 3 birds get sick but my cockatiel passed away yesterday. All my birds are well taken care of and extremely healthy so for this to happen so sudden is extremely unfortunate. My family has went here for several years and it's never been like this. Lots of cool birds but BEWARE, there are no signs on any of the cages saying "Don't Touch" or "Beware I May Bite". There are some really outside of cages too that you can pet. My friend got bit and needed stitches. Staff is very nice, store is clean. You can buy, board, or groom your birds there. read more

We were visiting from Arizona and decided to stop by for fun. There were a fair amount of birds in the store and two staff. We were the only two people in the store and were not greeted until who I assumed was the owner appeared from the back (there was one employee on the floor when we walked in). There were quite a few cockatiels in a large cage, felt like it was kind of cramped for them. It was hard to distinguish which birds were for sale and which weren't. The place was kind of dirty and felt like merchandise was limited. I wanted to possibly buy my cockatiel a toy, but didn't really find one. I love supporting small businesses, hopefully the next time we are in San Diego our experience will be better. read more

A few years ago, I bought my Lorikeet from the store. He was young, but very friendly. I was surprised when I entered the store because many of the birds are on perches that you can go near. I wanted to be sure before we bought our Lori, so I asked if I can have him perch on my finger, and the staff said yes. He quickly got on my finger and my sons. We put him back and I walked around the store. I wanted to see if he was receptive a second time. He was very receptive, so the decision was made in my mind. I was able to buy the food, cage, travel cage, and toys from the store to get started. That was very convenient. My son and I took the bird now named "skittles" home with us, and he has been nothing but an amazing bird that really bonded to the family. The store is mom and pop run with a focus on birds which is nice. It is no frills, but it doesn't need it. It serves it's purpose well. Almost like a mini zoo for birds. They also provide a hotel for birds as well as a place to get whatever supplies you need. If you are in the market for a bird, I'd recommend this store highly. You will have a pretty good idea of your compatibility versus a dice roll at a corporate pet store. read more

Very tame and very sweet birds. My wife recently passed away and my children were looking for something new in their lives. I decided to get them each a parakeet. I called around to a few places and felt BirdSmart would have what I needed. As much as I though I knew I didn't know. Thankfully I found BirdSmart because they were able to help me get the perfect pets for my kids and gave me the best advice on how to take care of them. They do an incredible job at raising them and sending them home completely tame. My children bonded with them immediately and I have been so happy for them. My children love holding them and having them sit on their shoulders when they do their homework. I often hear my daughter just talking to her parakeet like it is her own child. It is wonderful to have such tame and loving little birds. My daughter is camera shy but my son said I could use one picture of him. read more

I have been coming to Bird Smart for a long time, since way before they moved to Clairemont Mesa location. The bird seed has always been good. The counter ring up is a different story, not able to print receipts, not able to email receipts either...that's just bad business. The two girls at the counter both seemed lost. I had to ask for paper so I could write my own receipt. We've recently had credit card fraud (not here though). It has made me very aware of my credit card purchases. It's hard to refute a bill when you have no documentation. I just went back in and gave them an extra star, they e-mailed us a copy of our receipt. Thanks ladies! read more

I chose to come to Birdsmart for several reasons and Im glad I did. After doing some research, and going to other pet/bird shops you really cant go wrong here. This is a family owned business thats been doing this since they were children. The owner is very down to earth, knowledgeable, interactive with the birds and customers and helpful. You can tell the amount of ginuine care ans compassion they have for their birds. One thing that set this store apart from others was that I noticed the birds arent aggressive or isolated. They keep some of them out so you can see them interacting. Theres a great variety of birds there. The merchandise and food is also affordable. We bought a HUGE cage for $50. We were looking for a cockatiel, however knew nothing about taking care of one as an adult. She educated me about everything I needed to know, and more. With that being said we chose to get a baby albino whiteface cockatiel because we wanted to raise/train it from birth. We have to wait a bit over four weeks before we can take the baby home for nursing purposes. (You can see how tiny he/she is). Its been about 2.5 wks now, and we have been visiting and watching it grow until its ready to come home. They made us feel welcome, and let us bond with it each time. They also recommended for us to pickup the food mix the day we take baby home so it stays fresh. Very thoughtful, compassionate, knowledgeable, and caring place! read more

I have been a loyal customer since they started and am extremely disappointed with my last visit. They broke a verbal agreement and refused services for my parakeet after discussing everything in advance and being assured and expecting a contract when I returned a week later with my bird. In good conscience, I can't continue to support a business that 'flips' their promises. I do not recommend them nor will I be giving them any more of my business, including supplies. For Clairemont, this bird shop is the best. The people working here are friendly and approachable. They sell your standard bird supplies. Parking is easy and they do have a variety of birds on display. They have a nursery and you are allowed to handle the (adult) birds, if you ask an employee to help you. Bird prices range between $20 and 5k. The larger birds looked a bit tore back- the African grays and the macaws. Normally these birds are the super stars because they are such amazing, beautiful birds to see up close. These birds looked stressed and unhappy. The lovebirds were my favorite and they also have a really cool exotic looking bird, that resembles a toucan. I would not recommend buying a bird from the shop, but maybe stop by if all you need is some birdseed. read more

What an awesome family owned and operated place to get your feather baby from. We had been searching tirelessly for my daughter to purchase a green cheek conure. A few weeks ago her dream came true when we called BirdSmart and they had baby Conyers in.... we immediately drove down there to a very welcoming environment with very happy/healthy looking birds. The facility is immaculate. The employees extremely knowledgeable and friendly and "very patient" since this is our first bird we had a lot of questions. We were encouraged to come as often as possible (until our baby bird was ready to come home) so that my daughter could hold the bird, and bond. Which is proving to be an excellent method of preparing birds for their forever home. Yoshi has been home almost a week and he is already stepping up, he flys to my daughter when she calls him . He is so tame and lovable he is very smart and silly. and I attribute this to how he was hand fed with love from them. If you are looking for a healthy happy bird of nearly all types, or if you're looking for a place to babysit your feathered baby boarding is available there. As a matter fact one of the fellas that works there reminded me to say hi to one of the birds that's there on vacation so that he doesn't get lonely :) how thoughtful is that. I've been coming to this location since it was called Bird Crazy under a different owner. It has down sized since then. However, the staff knows a ton about birds and there is a good selection of birds for sale, birds food and toys. It's location off of Clairemont Mesa BLVD which is behind a Denny's. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because you can get a refund on a bird purchase. So if you bring one back, even if it's within a few days, you can only have store credit. read more
