Appallingly sad discrimination I must admit that it hurts my feelings, deeply to suffer discrimination like this in UK, specially when I'm the 1st saying that UK isn't as bad as the other countries in Europe. I call the 1st time on the 30th of September, explain my situation, that I have my driving test on the 31st of October. Couldn't make the payment because I was abroad. Call the 2nd time on the 3rd of October, to make the payment, the person I've spoken with, clearly does not care if she was ruining my future, once I've booked the test months ago and was struggling to find an available instructor, and we all know how hard it has been to find a test date this year, says there's nothing that could be done because of the "company policies", even when there's plenty of time until the test. I've called again and basically begged for someone to find me an instructor as this is very important to me. Still this person says no, and now is treating me like I'm an uneducated person. Really hurtful. I asked her if it had anything to do with the fact that I'm not British. She keeps repeating that it's the company's policy. Okay. I then ask my partner (who's British) to call on behalf of his daughter. Guess what? They found an instructor for "her". I'm glad the calls are recorded. If the owners care, even if just a little bit, you'll train your staff or have actions taken towards the company you're employing to deal with the correspondence, to treat everyone EQUALLY! Now, it's up to each of you to tell me, if the fact that I am not British is or not the reason I didn't get an instructor? Right. Appalling. Sad. Discrimination read more

Paid £25 deposit. Driving instructor never came back with a date for first lesson, just kept saying he'd give a date. Decided to go with a more professional driver and asked for a refund 10 WEEKS ago. Bill Plant still stalling and won't refund me. Every email another excuse why they haven't done it. SHOCKING CUSTOMER SERVICE! NEVER USE MOHAMMED FROM SLOUGH!! read more

Bill Plant are liars and thieves. Took my money under false pretences, didn't have a driver for me at the weekends but took my money anyway. Now they still haven't refunded me after 10 days it's still not in my account. Tried calling over and over again, but now they don't answer. As the lady mentioned, my details pop up when I call, so I can only assume that they are screening the calls and not answering as they have no intention of refunding me. DO NOT USE AND DEFINITELY DO NOT PAY THEM ANY MONEY. read more

This is the only driving company I have tried but I am more than impressed with them. After a quick internet search I found them and was more than happy to pay just 56 pounds for five lessons! A sure bargain as you get a new Corsa, fully qualified drivers and lesson times of your choice for a full hour each time. After your first five lessons you are then offered the rate of 19.50 which I found very reasonable when you look around at other companies charging up to 25 pounds per hour! With experienced drivers and a good background, this is one driving company you should definitely try! read more

This review is not for Bill Plant specifically but for an instructor within the franchise. I had previously taken driving lessons in another part of the country while I lived there and my instructor was lovely, very helpful and constructive, helped with confidence. When I came back home I found Bill Plant as a driving school to continue my tuition. The instructor that was given to be was Stuart Warren in Stevenage. To begin with he stood beside the car, while I was waiting to start my lesson, and smoked, which the car smelt of. He was rude and aggressive and did nothing to help my confidence. He was not constructive in his criticism and was very snappy when pointing out my faults. I felt nervous when I had a lesson with him which is not how you want to feel when learning to drive and I actually got to the point where he criticised so much and so harshly that it brought me to tears. This proved what kind of a person he was when he got angry with me for being upset, said that 'I obviously don't need him if I'm going to be like that', threw the booklet in the glove-box and slammed it shut then got out the car to drive back. This was a very upsetting experience for me and after this I did not get another instructor but learned to drive with family and passed fine. Also the fleet of cars that Bill Plant uses are BMW Series 1 Sport (no longer Audi A3) which are definitely not good cars for a learner and make it very difficult to learn in. I suggest not using this company, but if you do so, and in Stevenage, make sure you don't get Stuart Warren. Also I was charged £76 for the first 5 hours but they don't tell you that it includes the first hour free so you're actually paying £76 for 4 hours read more

I had problems with Bill Plant too. 1: twice the instructor did not turn up. 2: didn't apologise just said oh really was the lesson today. 3:didn't even bother to get in contact after I left a message for him. 4: you think your getting five lessons for £56 and the first one free but you don't they have crafty small print. read more

DO NOT USE Bill Plant Driving School. In searching for driving lessons for my son I called a number of schools. One called me back and I agreed to use them. When Bill Plant got back to me I advised the instructor who called me of the situation and thanked him for calling me back, at which point he said "Thanks for being a waste of space" and hung up. If this is the way they treat all prospective customers then I suggest you don't use Bill Plant's services read more

Worst driving school! Driving instructor rude and not trustworty. Always late and on the phone. No receipt given for payment. I paid £56 for the 5 hours package, i explained in the beginning that i have a full uk AUTO driving license and would like to do manual now, i was told that i could do 5 hours for £56, after the first lesson i was disgusted towards the behaviour of the driving instructor, shouting, late, on his phone and would never do the full hour. I then spoke to bill plant and said i would like my money back, i was told i would only b given £10 back because the lesson is £23 ph. I was shocked, once i paid the money i wasnt told anything of that sort. As soon as i asked for the money the DI was lying to the company claiming that he thought i was only taking 2 hours. If 2 hours is £46 why would he take £56 in the beginning. Poor customer service, appaling customer satisfaction. Moneygrabbers is the only way to describe them. read more

I'm writing this from an instructors point of view and after reading the franchise agreement for Bill Plant I'm not surprised so many people feel they are getting less than quality lessons from the company. I work with a company that I'm very happy with but when they had to change their franchise agreement I had to look elsewhere. I have been an instructor for nearly 10 years and have seen Bill Plant grow over that time so I thought I'd give them a call. The woman on the end of the phone was very nice, she answered any questions patiently and I decided to go ahead and swap to Bill Plant, after all there are no upfront fees and, despite the franchise being reasonably high they do provide a high spec car which they claim they pay for. I was booked onto an induction course at quite short notice at my request and they provided train tickets of their own accord in order for me to attend. All was well until the franchise agreement came through. I was told there were no up front fees only to find in the agreement that they wanted a £200 retainer for the car. Ok, I thought, fair enough it's a high spec car. The agreement then went on to tell you what to wear to driving lessons. I've been teaching for 10 years I really don't need anybody to tell me this and I found it mildly insulting. Then they insisted that I keep a pupil diary outlining what has been taught in each lesson and it had to be submitted to Bill Plant upon request without fail. So now I'm beginning to feel a little uncomfortable. Again, I have been teaching for 10 years, my pass rates are high and this is starting to feel like I'm back at instructor training. From there the agreement moved onto the really insulting part. If you want to leave the company you have to give three months notice AND hand over ALL pupils information to Bill Plant regardless of whether the pupil came directly to you or from Bill Plant. This was essentially a deal breaker for me. I didn't spend best part of a decade building up a reputation just to hand it over to someone else. In addition to this there were terms and conditions outlining that you cannot work in anything for several months after leaving which would be in direct competition with them. So in other words if you leave, they're keeping your business and essentially trying to eliminate you as competition. On the terms of the car you end up paying out for much more than you are initially told which given that they use an Audi A3, even the tyres cost a small fortune. I rang the company to discuss these concerns as well as others from the agreement and the only response I got was an enquiry as to whether it would have made a difference if there was no £200 upfront fees. When I said it was the handing over of my entire work diary and three month notice I was told that all learners remain Bill Plants learners. So what exactly would I be paying for? As far as I'm concerned the agreement was for the use of a car and provision of work. With regards to the three months notice I was told this is why they have a 28 day, no obligation period. When I explained that it's possible for someone to be happy in a company but have to leave due to a change in circumstance I got little in response. In the end I said I couldn't work with such a restricting agreement which is HEAVILY weighted in Bill Plants favour, the guy on the end of the phone responded with, "well that's a shame we bought your train tickets in good faith." I pointed out that I would happily return the tickets which they could get refunded if unused and he responded with, "yes, I know." I can't help but feel that I had a lucky escape from this company which is a shame because I remember years ago they had a really good reputation which is why I contacted them. They turned out to be no different from any other large chain school who seem to lose contact with customer satisfaction once they grow over a certain size, bearing in mind their instructors are customers too. I have no idea how they are for learners having never spoken to any of their learners but I can say I'm amazed anybody can work as self employed under such an iron fist agreement which will basically squeeze every last drop out of the instructors whilst dazzling them with a high spec car. My advise to anybody considering a job here is to read the contract thoroughly before signing anything. Very disappointing. read more

The instructors aren't always happy either. They have been consistently rude on the phone to me since I have told them I was leaving. Stolen my possessions out of the car and confirmed that they won't even look into a complaint because they don't have to. Pupils and other instructors looking into this franchise beware. read more

It's hilarious how the only people saying good things about this school are the instructors working there. If you wanted to know how good a business was would you listen to their staff or their customers? Let me tell you all exactly what it means to be fully qualified because Bill Plant is always banging on about it and it's very misleading. There are two ways that you can become a driving instructor. 1) You do 6 months with learners on a trainee licence to get experience before taking an exam to prove you can teach. This is a great way of you getting some experience as you train and for learners it can work because they often get a discount on lessons. You can easily tell if your instructor is a trainee because they'll have a pink badge instead of a green one. 2) People that want to become instructors go out in cars with other instructors and one pretends to be a learner as the other teaches them. You can tell Bill Plant uses this method because they're always shouting about We don't use trainees! All of our instructors are fully qualified!. Other schools do this as well as letting them teach learners but school's like Bill Plant ONLY use instructors pretending to be learners which is very fake and doesn't prepare you for a real learner. It's a bit like wrestling with a blow-up crocodile and then wrestling with a real one not the same thing! Which do you think would create a better driving instructor? Someone who's taught learners and then qualified or someone who has taught instructors pretending to be learners? Fully qualified means nothing! read more

We read this the day after my sons first lesson and was hoping it was going to improve! On his first hours lesson, he actually drove for 1/2 a mile and had got into 2nd gear! We booked a 2 hour lesson for his 2nd /3rd lesson, hoping he was going to be doing some driving if he did 2 hours! Mark, drove my son to Coxs Moors wood car park to drive around for some time and then my son was then drivin almost back home; to drive for 5 mins, to arrive 15 mins early back on our drive ( My son, kept himn talking to get his full 2 hours). His 4th/ 5th hour ( 3rd and Final lesson ).After Spending 20 mins on our drive before pulling off, he actually done a bit of driving this time, but not too much; of course! he got back to our's 20 mins early, as he had a sore throat! Can anyone see a pattern? My Son Said "Mark was a nice Bloke" but they are paid to do a job and they seem to just be prelonging lessons to get as many lessons as they can. This is Back Firing on them in a big way as my son is 17 and all his friends are of an age and recommend or not! as the case may be. We have booked up now after having 5 Lessons for £50 and the next 5 lessons at a loads cheaper rate than Bill Plant and will recommend them, if anyone want their name and number? Leave a reply! Don If any school dont drive for at least 45 mins loose them. We have! read more

Following on from Ronnie's comments I would agree with him. I have been with Bill Plant since their very early days when we were driving 1.0L Corsas. Not bad now is it with a fleet of over 500 Audi's. Great feedback from the pupils as well. Have been driving Hyundai iX35's for a couple of years and now the Audi Q3. Never once had any negative feedback about the cars quite the reverse. As far as bad driving instructors is concerned, we all know that there are some poor ones out there and they migrate from one school to another leading to a poor pupil experience. From time to time they will join companies like Bill Plant so don't judge the whole school by the odd rogue instructor. I know that Bill Plant is working heavily on QUALITY and not quantity with instructors. The vast majority of us are out there providing the best we can deliver for our pupils. I am sometimes asked by pupils if they can have another introductory offer remember it is an introductory offer so it only applies once. £56 for the first 5 hours has been around from the beginning so with inflation it gets cheaper each year. It's a great way to start as a pupil and gives pupils 5 hours to get used to the instructor and the car. Hope these comments help any pupils looking at Bill Plant as their driving school read more

Took up the 5 lessons for £56 offer that was advertised on their website. In that time, I was not allowed to drive from my house I was always driven somewhere, and then allowed to drive (I live in a cul-de-sac, off a fairly minor road as well). One of the lessons was a double, so in total I had four independent lessons out of those I visited the petrol station three times. On the last lesson, I was driven to somewhere that tests generally take place, which took about 30 mins each way, so only an hour behind the wheel. During this lesson, I was practising left turns when the instructor had to take a call. After about five minutes of rambling, I was asked to pull over so that she could sort out her insurance details. Not only was this illegal, it was extremely rude. I told her i'd think about taking up more lessons on the way home, but definetly wasn't going to go back. Tried to submit a complaint via their website, and was contacted the next day by telephone from another Bill Plant instructor who wanted to know how many lessons I wanted to book. He had been told an enquiry had been made into lessons, when in fact I was trying to complain. A complete waste of both time and money, and it put me off driving for two years. read more

Well I had my first lesson with Bill Plant last week thought the price was great but I was quite unimpressed found the instructor very unprofessional didn't really explain things properly probably as tedizz mentioned not qualified however I still have 4 more lessons to go so I will see how it goes and maybe update you guys :) Ok so update after 6 lessons with bill plant I dropped them, seriouisly unimpressed and pretty much put me off driving for life, as my so called instructor got me to drive on the busiest road in my area and nearly got me killed! he was completely useless getting me to drive on roads like that with not much knowledge and experience which he knew! Please do not go with bill plant you will regret it, I do, oh and another thing very pushy and money grabbing asking me to have a lesson the next day after I'd just had a two hour one, who has a four lesson a week? seriously? stupid! leaving me voice messages and texts asking for lessons do not go with these cowboys! read more

I am an ADI with Bill Plant National Driving School and I think it is (in my opinion) the premier Driving School in the country. Yes there are complaints about some intructors but you will get that with ANY Driving School. The instructors are in general very good (all fully qualified), enthusiastic and care about there pupils. I would recommend the school to anybody. You are also learning in a superb car the Audi A3 or Q3 I ahve taught in the Corsa, Fiesta & Hyundi and the Audi is the best by far. Don't be put off by the Q3 it looks big but all my pupils loce driving it and find it a joy to drive. Ronnie Lamont read more

my son had been having lessons with a instuctor in solihull, he was happy with her, the day of his test approached, he made sure she was ok for the day and time, she was. 20 mins before his test time she texted him to say she wont be comming. We were disgusted. A complaint was made to headoffice and their response was because she hadnt done anything like that before they will refund the test fee. She still works for them, my son has had to wait another 3 months for a test, as the date is getting nearer, he has in the back of his mind what if it happens again. i will never recommend bill plant to anyone. read more

Terrible instructors, poor quality lessons and very unreliable. They look great on paper, boasting cheap deals, fully qualified instructors, using Audi's and with a flashy website but there's nothing to back it all up. The first few lessons seem cheap but then you find out that the cost is going to be over £10 an hour more usually! From £14 an hour to £25+ per hour. If you choose not to take more then you get bombarded by aggressive calls, emails, texts and even letters in the post. There are plenty of good schools out there, don't make the mistake of choosing this one. read more

after 17 1/2 hrs and £331.00 later i was just begining to do some proper driving on road after spending all the rest of the time doing left and right turns . Tried another instructor from the AA wow, first lesson drove from my house done loads of things i was told could not do and my new instructor told me there was nothing wrong with my driving. 2nd and 3rd lessons drove from bham city centre to kiddiminster and bromsgrove in all kind s of traffic. my advice if your not happy after three lessons get a second opinion and dont go with bill plant. read more

I completed over 40 hours of practice with Bill Plant using the same instructor and car, only to be let down right before my test. Despite booking the test based on their confirmation, they failed to provide the promised car for cover. This shows a complete lack of responsibility and professionalism. If a driving school cannot guarantee test cover after so many hours of paid lessons, then the lessons hold no real value. Extremely disappointing experience - I would not recommend this school to anyone who wants reliability and proper support. read more

I paid £56 in advance and my instructor never even turned up, after dozens of calls to them i was told i would get nothing back, i then read in a local paper that there are dozens of pupils in my area who have paid and not had lessons after instructors run off with the money. I finally had an instructor come round in an old wreck of a car with dents all over it who spend most of the hour smoking. Make your own mind up. read more
