This is the BEST vintage store I have ever been in, and I do a LOT of vintage shopping, from NY to FL. I was completely knocked out by H of K because: 1) They have larger sized women's clothing! Several dresses that were probably size 10-12 which is super rare since most vintage is size 2-4. 2) They have men's clothes - a lot of them. Most vintage stores have a lot of women's items and hardly any men's, but H of K is about 40% menswear. 3) EVERYTHING is in immaculate condition. The prices reflect this, but nothing I thought was out of reach since you're buying one of a kind, well made clothing. To be clear, this is vintage, not thrift. Some of the items are up to 100 years old, so you can't expect it's going to be $5. 4) Woman working there was so nice! Not pretentious, not pushy, not overbearing, but welcoming--and very sweet when I asked if I could take pictures for my review. 5) There is NO junk or random crap - it's obvious that someone has a keen eye for beautiful things and thoughtfully puts them together in collections. When we visited, there were selections of kimonos, smoking jackets, leather capes (!), summer dresses, etc. What's amazing is that it would be 8-20 of each "genre" so you have a pick of colors and sizes... it's not just one random cape or top hat. There's also home items sprinkled throughout, but in a way that is intentional and curated (like the wool camp blankets in the men's section, vintage quilts near a small section of kids' clothes, selection of aluminum thermoses by the outerwear). 6) I collect vintage women's hats and the selection at H of K is exquisite. Very fine examples of 40's/50's hats in absolute mint condition, and fairly priced. I went a bit bonkers taking pictures of everything - this shop is an absolute dream, and I wish I lived closer so I could visit every weekend. House of Kismet is an incredibly rare combination of incredible items and friendliness.

I spent a little…read moretime in here and appreciated the care and attention of the owners, they do tend to stock more heavily into jewelry but that's a broad category and you can find a lot of necklaces, earrings, rings, and even a much larger selection of tie bars and cuff links than I've seen in most shops of this size. Pricing is really hit or miss, but nothing is outrageous. I found that their cuff links were much cheaper than I find in other places, but some of the larger or more well known were a little higher. I didn't do any bargaining so I'm not really sure how much wiggle room there is. They had a large stash of local Haywood County oriented postcards that were unused and had that great linen texture, which I felt like was a real find.

Firstly, I have finally become disgusted by the baby items in the toy dept. They never sell, and I do not think that the mildew smell in that area is a plus. They need to just discard those items, and call it a day. Secondly, they need to display some clothing prices more prominently. Thirdly, some volunteers are very rude. We had to deal with one that was strangely friendly yet aggressive at the same time. If I cannot trust someone, I do not want to deal with them. When I questioned the price of the items I was purchasing, the volunteer attempted to explain the prices, but just ended up holding out her hand for my money. I just paid out of shock. Fourthly, it is sometimes complete chaos at three pm, due to people wanting to get their bids in for auction stuff. Everyone gets aggressive. Lastly, or fifthly if you insist, I purchased a bathing suit with bodily secretion. They need to check bathing suits before putting them out, although I have to bear some of the blame for that- I should have checked as well, but assumed that they did out of moral obligation. Now I know to check. I am trying not to cringe, as that visual is not easily dismissed. Well, that's it for now. One more negative incident might drive me over the edge. Updated Update (10/29/15): Just some notes on the silent auction...all you do is write down your name, starting bid, and phone number. Bids have to be increased by at least two bucks. You have until 2:45 pm, even via phone to put in a last bid. You can also have a bid-off- everyone writes down their max bid privately, and then the winner is announced by an employee. We just bid on older Canons, but lost on both. One came with lenses, and the other two were digital cameras...no extra wares, but one came with pics of strangers. Just wanted to give you an idea of what kind of stuff you might see. An employee told me that most stuff at this shop is from estates- meaning someone passed on, and all their stuff was donated to said shop.

I fight down a panic and try to not feel numb. For me, thrift stores are an antidote. This thrift store has been rearranged. It is bigger now. More space to move. Clothing was hung by color or print. Most stuff is arranged in certain categories and labeled. Small, framed pictures were hard to get to. Scarfs were overflowing. You have to put in an effort in some areas still, but overall, the makeover of this shop is a great improvement. There is even a unisex bathroom now! However, the sink was not working. Not ideal, pandemic or no pandemic. No no if you have to go go. The dressing rooms were not open. Not sure why. Rampant theft of six-year-old Old Navy blouses, or just HCM trying not to entice people to share small spaces with abated breaths. The reason that I removed one star is because one of the cashiers is INCREASING THE PRICES AT HER DISCRETION. Her doing that is immoral and may even be unlawful. I let her get away with it with the book I was buying. The price had been reduced by half, but she added a quarter. However, just about twenty minutes ago, my daughter told me that the cashier did the same with her craft items. I know that HCM has to fix the sink, but I draw the line at scamming a kid. I feel good that by us shopping here, we are supporting people in times of crises. But I don't have to support a con. I will return when I can clean my hands and HCM cleans their souls.
