Love this mountain community. Just spent several days here with the grands and they had a blast! From bear spotting and deer gazing, the beautiful woods offer so much to see. Over 50 miles of hiking trails, three lakes, a beautiful marina, and two pools, there is something for everyone. The girls loved the rock slide and both pools. There are ample lifeguards, which is reassuring. The Beach Club offers a pool and a beach on the lake side. There is an inflatable obstacle course which kids love, too. There are so many amenities, you always have something to do. We aren't golfers but the course is beautiful. The lodge restaurant is set to reopen soon after a complete renovation, but there is also a fabulous restaurant just outside the gate. (Yes, this is a gated community) The restaurant is called Home and it serves delicious meals. You can get something as simple as a great burger or something fancier like seared halibut. The girls loved the ice cream shop just outside the gate. There's another restaurant in the same plaza, called the Lucky Hare and it's supposed to be good as well. Big Canoe is the perfect place to visit, whether you are looking for adventure or a relaxing time in the woods, surrounded by countless wildlife. read more

Well first off, Mother Nature always comes through with the beautiful landscape!!! We made our way into the Big Canoe neighborhood- up & around the windy road to our house/cabin 27 Laurel Ridge Lane Jasper, Ga. 30143 A beautiful house & BIG! 5 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths. This house had 5 beds & bunks in 1 bedroom- PERFECT for a large crowd. I am terribly sorry, but if I felt better I would have taken a TON of pics!! 3 stories!! Upstairs had 2 large bedrooms & jack/jill bathroom. Spacious!! Main floor had 1/2 bath, master bed/bath, large kitchen & a small living room area w/fireplace. Downstairs had 2 bedrooms & jack/jill bath, laundry & a spacious extra "livingroom" Long deck could view the golf course & beautiful mountains!!! There is a small screened in porch w/dining table too. Downstairs had ANOTHER deck with a hot tub (didn't use). If you are wanting a relaxing vacation spot, this is great! Houses are VERY close to eachother, but you really don't feel it! Enough space for all to truly relax & be safe in this beautiful gated community!! I'm sure not cheap. 4 couples split a 2 night stay at $200 each. We could have had at least another couple or 2 to split more! Bring extra coffee pods, TP, paper towels, napkins & food if you are staying over a few days. A full kitchen & lots of dishes, pots pans, etc! But not FULLY stocked. Clearly it was a mistake to drive 4hrs today to see your rescue puppies. You, myself and Gary had days to prepare for the meeting. Dusky, our older dog, wasn't given enough time to adapt. Your decision was rushed/abrupt. Also, clearly a mistake to put the most energetic puppy with an older dog to meet initially. Poor choice on your part. Also, we were emailed more than once, that one or two puppies were up for adoption. You quickly changed your story that you 'wouldn't separate them.' Again, poor reflection on your ability to be honest. Plus, knowing we were driving 4hrs, why tell us the puppies were ready for adoption and then say the then set of vaccinations are to be on the 13th/not ready. Your communication was not reliable or you easily changed/modified arrangements at your convenience. Either way, it reflects poorly on you. Not impressed with the encounter. This is my last response - I am not sure you deserved any further reflection. Gary and I have had 3 previous rescue dogs in the past 20 years that we adopted from shelters with less than half the difficulty you placed on your rescues. Our prior shelters don't charge any fees for adults over the age of 60. Plus, they are already sprayed/neutered at the age of 4 months. Their rescues made for wonderful pets. Maybe you didn't have anyone to spend Mother's Day with, but you ruined the day for me personally. You need to come out of your ivory-tower environment to the real world/reality. There is sooo much to do here. The lake, marina has pontoon boats. Swimming, canoe, kayak, paddleboards, paddle boats, obstacle course, a long "rock" (concrete) slide. We saw a huge snapping turtle while canoeing! The outdoor pool, very large, with tons of chaises, a indoor grill, bathrooms, clubhouse, several outdoor tables and benches. Indoor lap pool and fitness center with lots of artwork for sale. At The Clubhouse, several options for meals, including the Bear Paw Pub. Soccer, tennis, bocce ball, golf, fishing, pretty sure I'm forgetting some. Several hiking and walking trails, one has a waterfall payout. The only thing lacking is better signage. The maps are awful and the only sign for the pools, lake, etc is when you are there! Lol! read more

I like Big Canoe but I am a skeptic when it comes to the high number of Airb&b rentals in this community. It negatively impacts property values and infiltrates the community with people that are not concerned with maintaining their property. read more

We rented an airbnb here and it was nothing short of amazing. It's a private community with tons of amenities scattered throughout about 8000 acres. 65% percent of the homes are permanent residents so it's a very calm and relaxing environment. Dog parks, pools, and hiking trails are within minutes of driving. It's a lovely pot for wedding at the little chapel with so many picturesque spots in the mountains. Don't forget the amazing golf course, athletic center and Jeep trails. read more

A man-made community in the mountains.. it's what you would want a retreat from the city to be: quiet, beautiful, secluded. This place is less than 2 hours from Atlanta. I brought anti-nausea medicine, expecting the road up to be windy. It wasn't as windy as I expected. The community in the mountains itself was more windy than the drive. There are several entrances. One must be a homeowner or guest to be able to enter the gates. Ask for a map as the community is large! I stayed in the treetopper "neighborhood" within the community. This involved a scenic drive past the marina, park, and golf-course. I saw signs for a park, dog park, hiking trail. One can park near the lake and sit on one of many benches. This is in a great location, close to Dahlonega, Amicalola Falls, Jasper, etc. There is at least one restaurant one site but there are several good restaurants nearby as well. I highly recommend this for a mountain getaway. read more

We've stayed here 2 years in a row at a time share but will not be back. While the scenery is beautiful and the amenities are amazing. The villa we stayed at seemed to be falling apart. It seems like the management does as little as possible to keep the place up. Upon checking in (4 PM on Saturday) we had an issue with the stove and washing machine. We called the office and they walked us through the repair over the phone, and stated that someone would be out Monday to fix the washer, but she had used it earlier that day. Weird. After looking around for a few minutes I notice the water is turned off to the machine. So, she lied to us. Nice. We visited in July, which is apparently 'spider season', however it seemed like the cleaning staff did not attempt to remove any cobwebs. read more

The community itself is very pretty, and has many ammenities. Their security staff is the biggest issue. not only do they barely do their jobs, the 2 that we have had to deal with while renting here have both had horrible attitudes. if it werent for the gate situation, this trip would have been extremely enjoyable. read more

We spent the weekend here for a wedding. The venue was beautiful. The ceremony was held on the patio overlooking the lake, and it was a wonderful view. The building itself was a bit on the smaller side, but it was cute. There are various cabins, homes, and treetoppers for rent. We stayed in the latter, and we loved it! There's kayaking, canoeing, and other water sports available. This is more for relaxation, so I'm not sure how fun it would be for a family with younger children. The are minimal restaurants around so we had to improvise. We would definitely consider coming back. read more

Rented a cabin for Labor Day weekend at Big Canoe. Lovely scenery!! Awesome community with restaurants, jeep trails, golf course- great reviews online, it seemed like a great choice what could go wrong?! Unfortunately, the staff working the gate are less than accommodating- I understand there are rules but they print a pass for non residents to scan to enter the community additionally, contrary to any gated community I've had experience with, Big Canoe requires a pass to exit. When I was leaving at one point I had forgotten my gate pass to exit and asked for a new one to be printed and the woman at the gate said "I don't have time to print one, wait until you get back." I understand being busy but the hostility was ridiculous even worse, her supervisor was present and insisted upon returning they would print me a new pass. I was patient willing to wait and was not accommodated what so ever. To top it off, the parking at my cabin was lack luster when I was told specifically by the property manager prior to renting there was ample parking for a trailer etc. (not the community's fault) upon getting into our cabin I was over come with a bad smell... after exploring the cabin (awesome views from outside- great covered porch) the downstairs closet was covered in mold and to make matters worse there was an air purifier powered on. Someone was aware of this issue. The photos online were deceiving, the community was hardly accommodating to guests and when I go back to jasper next year Big Canoe will not be where I visit!!!!! Online reviews were deceiving as well. The house I stayed in said immaculate with four star reviews, etc and it was mold infested. Be aware of Big Canoe online advertising.. Completely deceiving. It is presented as a nice community with plenty amenities but they don't treat the guests as such. read more

An absolutely beautiful, well kept place with great amenities. Various different cabins at different prices points. Good family fun with 4X4 off road trail, pontoon boats and fishing, indoor/outdoor saline pools, gym, etc. Black bear pub is an above average resort bar with good food. Friday night live music a lot of fun, but more focused on the "above 50" crowd (hey, us grown ups need our separate fun times). Great combinations of mountains and lakes. After an 8.5 hour trip we arrived and quickly loved what we saw, We had no expectations as we have been to other cabins. Since we live in a flat state the mountains, hills and so much greenery have been such a breath of fresh air. As we walked in we just smiled. It is small but that's ok, we got to be around each other more. Only one tv so it allows us to spend more quality time together. Mostly a retired community. Tree top cabins is so far amazing. Karl the owner was so hospitable. He showed both my husband and I around, allowed us to use his Paddle board and kayaks. We have already shared Tree Top, in Big Canoe with friends and they're already planning on going. It offers washer and dryer, fishing poles, camping gear, and so much more. The Big Canoe golf course was beautiful, included wild life and scenery that just won't quit. 1 week isn't enough to experience what you can do in and around this beautiful mountain. We would definitely visit again and even one day retire to this Oasis! read more

Big Canoe was beautiful, we enjoyed the pool and the water sports a great deal. What we had difficulty with was our realtor. We rented a 4 bedroom house based on the pictures seen. There were 4 couples staying in this house. Once we got to the house, it was indeed a 3 bedroom, priced as a 4 bedroom. The fourth "bedroom" was a OPEN room off the bottom floor living space. It had a divider to "separate" it from the common area. There was a closet, but no door and no wall to close the space off. NO privacy. We brought this to the attention of the realtor who initially promised to compensate us for the issue; however, by the last day of our vacation, we found he had no intention of keeping his word. Not only did we lose a bedroom and the money, but the dryer was clearly broken, making loud noises whenever we used it, the house was dirty and filled with dusty and old furnishings, and we had roaches running around inside.
