Dealing with Royal Decks has been an endlessly frustrating experience. We had 4 quotes for decks…read moreand we picked them because they were the most expensive and had good reviews on Homestars and Miro seems like a genuinely nice guy. You pay a hefty deposit ($5000) up front to save the dates 2 months in advance. What was quoted as a 7-10 day job took 2.5 months...always caught up in other jobs. They just disappear for weeks and really don't seem to care. The weather was fine so that wasn't an excuse. You pick out your material months before but they keep having to order it (sorry don't have the plants, and sorry don't have the railings) etc which leads to delays again and again. They made some big mistakes and gave us poor options to fix them. Some of their problems were related to their poor communication with other tradespeople who all were upset by Royal Decks behaviour. What should have been a straightforward relatively small but expensive job has been headache after headache. Problem is once you've spent the money what recourse do you have? Would never recommend them.

Online quoting is convenient, if a bit fussy going back and forth, but sending accurate pictures of the job is important. Pricing seemed fair. Our only problem with our initial project was the timing of arrival. Stephen arrived about an hour and a half after the appointed time. Stephen did text to let us know he was unavoidably delayed, and it appeared to be one of those things and not representative of their usual service. We are going to try them again on another painting project and are confident it will go smoothly.

The handyman showed up right on time and was efficient, friendly, neat, and very well-organized. He started by applying one coat of paint to the bathroom walls, telling me right from the start that, in his experience, it was going to need three coats to cover the colour underneath. Since I had been given a quote for two coats, this would be a bit extra to the estimate. Once the first coat of paint had been applied, he installed the curtain rods and hung the curtains for me. The installation is now very sturdy and the place looks much nicer. He then went back and did the second coat of paint. He had me take a look at it after, to decide whether I was OK with it as it was, or if I would like the third coat. Although there is a very, very slight remnant of the former colour, I decided that I was OK with that because otherwise everything in the room would be too white. Overall, I am very pleased with the result. He was extremely neat and cleaned up after himself, although I didn't see that he made any mess anyway. I guess the only downside for me is that I find their prices a bit on the high side and that's my reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. However, in fairness, I should probably have asked more questions beforehand and/or had more than one company give me an estimate. I recognize that things in general are a lot more expensive these days.

Shawn McMahon and Jarrod Burke also own PJC (Penny, Carter, Jaxson) Contracting and PJC Homes and Renos. They are unqualified to be business owners, tradesmen, general contractors, or decent human beings. While this statement may be strong, it is warranted from the horrific experience we had working with them. We spent over $100,000 and are missing materials and have to hire 3 new contractors because they abandoned the job and the work they did was awful work product. Their website says "enjoy the experience as much as the final product" and that they finish every job "on time and on budget". Be careful with Shawn's spin of the meaning of these words. Our original budget was $60,000 and our end date was October, 2020. It is now January 10, 2021 and we are still not in our home, $40,000 over that original budget, and may need another $25,000-$30,000 to complete the project. Please do NOT hire these two men and please tell your friends and neighbors to avoid them at all costs! Learn from our mistakes!
