I have booked many fishing guides across the US fishing everything from tarpon in Boca Grande to bass on Lake Chickamauga and I have to tip my hat to Chad for an amazing day on the Muskegon River. Since battling king salmon was on my to-do list, I contacted him in August to set up a date and we settled on October 17th. Chad thought that would be the height of the king salmon run and he was dead-on. As the date approached, he stayed in touch with me and offered a few suggestions for lodging in the area. On the big day, we split fishing between steelhead and king salmon. In the morning, we hooked up with 4 steelies and netted 2 in the 8-10 lb. range, along with a dozen or so fat rainbow trout. When the steelhead action cooled down, we switched gears and hooked 4 kings, netting two above 25 lbs. Chad clearly knows this river and was very helpful to me and my 19 year-old son. Since we rarely fish rivers, Chad clearly explained the tackle, the tactics and techniques. It took us awhile to catch on, but once we did we were on the fish! I'm not sure why some reviewers have complained about Chad's attitude. Our experience was that he is passionate about his business- teaching anglers and catching fish. He could be very direct in his instructions, but that only helped us learn more quickly. When we followed instructions, we caught fish. It's as simple as that. At the end of the day, Chad cleaned our catch and we left with two large Ziploc bags filled with steelhead and rainbow trout (along with Chad's cooking recommendations). More importantly, we left with memories of a tremendous day on the water. We are already looking forward to next year's trip and will definitely book it with Chad!

Had a great time this evening with Gabe. He was extremely friendly and patient as I had never river fished before. We caught several fish and enjoyed our evening on the river with him.

Chad said he would take us out then didn't want us to go again and offered to refund our deposit to take down the review, where I declined.

I've got lots of thoughts running through my head, simultaneously, all the time. So when I stepped…read moreup to the check-in counter at Millennium Park Boat Rentals, the thoughts in my head were: Wow! It only costs $8 per hour to rent a kayak? Sweet! Wow! These people checking me in and telling me safety information are incredibly young! Will they be able to save me and my family if our kayaks flip over and we fall into the lake? Wow! What a beautiful day! But I wonder how often people fall into the lake. I also wonder how deep the lake is. I also wonder if it's possible to be trapped underwater if your kayak flips over. In the end, I decided to kick it on the sandy beach and wave at my family as they happily paddled on the lake. They had a great time kayaking. I had a great time not kayaking. Like Hot Chocolate says: Everyone's a winner, baby. Kayaks are either single-person or double, and we used one of each. There are very few instructions given, which was a little alarming to me. (You mean you just assume we know what we're doing?!) But fortunately, my family knew what they were doing, so they didn't need much instruction to get themselves out on the water. As you paddle around the lake, you pass the Millennium Park beach and splash pad, plus little islands here and there. There is about four miles of shoreline to explore. I was told that the lake was nice and calm, and that it was a pleasant time on the water. We rented kayaks, but Millennium Park Boat Rentals also offers canoes, paddle boats and stand-up paddle boards to rent. Keep in mind that rentals are seasonal -- this place is only open from Memorial Day-ish to Labor Day-ish.

Perhaps one of the best gifts I have ever received. Our hosts, Matt and Laurie, were amazing. A few days before our arrival, Matt called to ask about food and accommodation preferences. The breakfasts Laurie prepared were so special, my we texted pics to Mom. Matt also put a great deal of thought and time into preparing food for our time on the river. Then came fly fishing! I could not have scripted a better experience or imagined a better guide/instructor. While I went to a fly fishing instruction weekend years ago, we are novices. You will never find a better person to learn from. Without a doubt, Matt is one of the best! More importantly to me as a grandpa, was the attention, patience and real interest he had in teaching my grandson. Before our two days were over, he caught 5 fish and several more that got away! (I caught a few, and would have caught more, except for the joy I had watching my grandson learn from Matt). His knowledge and teaching skills are remarkable. His ability to give such attention to an 8 year old for 5 hours a day for two days, and at the same time keep an eye on me and give me valuable advice was priceless. As a B&B, Gray Drake is excellent. As a fly fishing experience and a learning experience, all I can add is that the memories will be with my grandson and I for life!

I happened to read the previous review on this Lodge and I felt compelled to write a review myself…read more Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that is great-however I feel the woman who wrote the review kind of missed the point that it is a fly fishing lodge not just a B and B. She must have never stayed at this type of bed and breakfast to not know that everything she was complaining about it how every fly fish lodge is structured. Fly fishing lodges are catered to Fly fishermen and like myself Fly fisherwomen. It is a place where people do like to hear stories about fishing and fish that has been caught. It is also a place where food is part of the experience and they cater you while you stay. It is part of the price you agree to pay before you stay at a bed and breakfast. I stayed at this lodge with my husband this past week for our honeymoon. It was nothing less than amazing. Matt the owner and his wife take their lodge very seriously and when they were in the living area it was far away from the guests and they were cleaning up after us. They were never there to socialize or interrupt, they were simply keeping order in the lodge so that everything looked appealing to their guests. I find it interesting that a guest would complain about the owner wanting to acknowledge their guests. Matt and his wife were always very pleasant and professional. We never once felt uncomfortable. Their lodge was so clean and organized-just a breathtaking place to stay id you love fly fishing and the outdoors. We had such a wonderful experience here at this lodge and we are already planning on when we can visit again. The room we stayed was the master room suite. I will post a picture so you can see-it was so beautiful and the architecture was very unique. Right outside the door was a Jacuzzi overlooking the river which was such an unexpected bonus (which I may add was never advertised so I am not sure why the woman on the previous review was complaining, since it was she didn't even know they had one until she got there...). Matt himself took us fly fishing on his DAYS OFF. We thought that was really fun. He was so helpful and was great at giving direction when we needed it (and I needed it a lot). My husband is an avid fly fisher and we have been to many lodges. He was very impressed with the whole experience we had with him. I highly suggest staying here if you are looking to fish in Michigan. I also highly suggest not staying here if you want to be antisocial and complain like the last review-if you want to stay at a cold place with cold people, go to a motel. THIS IS A FLY FISHING LODGE. Not sure if you will see this Matt, but thank you and your wife for such an awesome time and awesome food and fishing! We absolutely will be back.
