I'm not as enamored by this gym as other reviewers, but I will say that it's OK…read more Back in the States, I was a member of the YMCA. Though Y's aren't known for being glamourous or particularly well-equipped, the ones that I frequented in Delaware and Maryland were amazing. I hoped to find a similar gym in my neighborhood, but quickly learned that gyms of that caliber are very expensive. Instead, I chose price & location over equipment and signed on with Fitness4Less. In September, they ran a student promotion for three months of membership for £69 cash. While that is clearly more expensive that £14.99** per month, I was able to avoid setting up direct debit for the UK bank account that I hadn't established yet. I appreciate that there is rarely (never?) a wait for equipment. I can use the elliptical or free weights whenever my heart desires. The reason that I gave this place only 4 stars is because of the limited morning classes Mon-Fri. In the evening (after 5pm), there is a class almost every hour. The range includes yoga, muy thai fighting, zumba, body conditioning, and krav maga. In the morning, there is one pilates and one core conditioning classes *per week*. The rest of the morning classes are spinning. While I enjoy spinning, I find that the bikes are too small for my tall frame (5'9''). I wish that the variety of evening classes was replicated in the morning. On a positive note: the weekend morning classes are great, especially Bogusha's pilates class. She may be over 60-years-old, but she seriously works your body! **The monthly fee is now £15.99/mo.

Strand

Virgin Active has been the worst customer experience I've ever had. After I complained about a rude…read morestaff member (at Strand), he retaliated by getting my brand new membership at Chiswick Riverside cancelled behind my back. I was never told -- I only found out when I was blocked at the door. They kept my £125 joining fee, left me without access for a week, and have dragged me through over a month of back-and-forth lies and contradictions. They're now even emailing me from Mill Hill saying I "haven't cancelled" when I clearly have. As a disabled person, I find this not only retaliatory but also discriminatory. For a company charging nearly £300/month, to treat members this way -- silencing complaints, cancelling memberships without notice, keeping money, and refusing accountability -- is beyond disgraceful. Avoid at all costs.

Horrible gym So many issues and it's only getting worse…read more We have been waiting to fix the air conditioning in spinning studio and class studio for over two month already I can not do any classes, because it's too hot and due to broken airco it's smells like fish and chips from the hotels nearby. The broken glass in the spinning room no one is fixing and it's just separated by the ugly red fence The emergence button in sauna is not working for ages. It's not like I need it, but there is sign that they are working on it since I signed in since last year. Few showers are not working for a year. They don't supply plastic bags anymore, because they say they go green and l they only give one towel per person, saying that there is supplier issue but I am pretty sure they are just trying to save some money The shampoo and conditioner are always empty Shower walls and ceiling are covered y mould. But the have a person sitting in the swimming pool and watching. Never seen something like this in my live! The pool is like 1.60 meters max! Who are they watching? Today I came to exercise and someone was painting something in the gym area and the smell was so strong than after 10 min I got sick and had to go home. I felt sick and had a headache afterwards They didn't even bother to to do in the closing times and ventilate the area properly I can not do any classes for more than two month already and now I can't even use the gym. The price is 150 pounds per month btw! So if you want to do your workout and inhale paint and fish and ships please welcome to Virgin Strand!

Waterloo, Southwark

I've been going to the Waterloo Branch for some years - on and off - but I have noticed a steady…read moredeterioration in the general cleanliness of the place and the less than welcoming attitude of the staff - especially the new ones. In the past a stroppy member of staff stood in the doorway of the steam room after I had asked him to close the door because it was already cold. He stood there with the door wide open and deliberately let the steam out. I stopped going for some years. Another time an idiot supervisor put eucalyptus oil on to the sauna elements - the vapour caused my eyes to burn - the establishment did not have eyewash equipment. There was no response from the owner to my complaint - who also owns the straight but scummy Rios Spa up in Kentish Town. The staff at Waterloo also enjoy going down onto to their hands and knees and peering under the cubicle doors to watch the 'action' inside. I'm amazed that Lambeth Council allows the place to operate. There is no fire exit in case of fire. I have seen guys having group bareback anal sex in the open relaxation room. The toilet floor is filthy with urine stains. The steam room smells of damp and mould and the tiles are peeling off the walls. Recently I went there on a cold day. There was a new member of staff at the entrance. Firstly I was charged £14 despite showing my Freedom Pensioner Pass. Then I was accused of trying to bring alcohol into the place - my bag was full of presents and a laptop. Then I was asked if I had drugs on me. Jeeze - and I hadn't even gotten in the door. He took my money. Then he decided that I was not be allowed in after all and so gave me my money back and asked me to leave. Of all of the saunas, spas and Turkish baths (hammans) I have been to around the world the Chariots chain and Rios in London are the very worst. Indeed there have been deaths from drug overdoses at the branch in Vauxhall. You'd have to be really desperate to go to any of these.
