Typical South City business- employees who don't want to be there, less than great cleanliness,…read morealways out of items. It's a 50/50 chance this location will have STAMPS. Yes, the #1 staple of a post office- maybe they'll have some, maybe they won't. Employees aren't quite as annoyed to have customers as a lot of South City businesses, but they're not really thrilled to help you, either. The bullet proof glass is very warm and welcoming. It's alright if you really need to mail something, but again, you're gambling with any city post office getting your mail to where it needs to go. If there's a county post office on your way to anywhere else, I recommend doing your postal business there instead.

It's a ghetto post office in a not-so-ghetto location (slight shade but not too bad) in the city. That said, I've never seen a post office with bullet proof glass. Once the woman said "can't put it in there, gotta take em to the door!" I guess the sliding package glass was broken?? It left me wondering "what door? Huh?" Well, there's a gray door at the end of the main hallway. I knocked twice and waited and waited. Eventually hearing "I can't wait til 5 o'clock!!" Come from behind. Finally it opened and she took my packages. Ughhh. The are consistently lacking supplies in front, you cannot ship a package larger than the bullet proof glass encasement, and the front doors are awkward to open. One is also always locked in place. Parking is on the street but someone is always entitled enough to pull up and park on the sidewalk. Yeah, like the one for humans to walk on. I guess this is an "urban post office", short lines but big attitudes.

Our tour was supposed to run about forty minutes, but we asked a lot of questions and it lasted over an hour- oops. Lots of furniture that was original to the family (not the case with the nearby Lemp Mansion). Ask if you can go on the balcony- they let us and it has a great view of the yard and surrounding buildings. The guide was so knowledgable- she was able to answer every question about the house that our group of four asked. The gift shop is nice-sized and rather inexpensive- a mixture of antiques, books, and other items. I was disappointed that the Cafe is closed while they look for a new tenant, but went to Gus's Pretzels nearby instead.

I was quite charmed by the house and especially the tour guide. On Bastille Day, the ticket price was a little higher than typical, at $12, but it included french dancing, storming the Bastille, plus the mock decapitation of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. The House Tour was excellent, and interesting, not to mention historical and educational. It was well worth the money mostly due to the humorous delivery and knowledge of the tour guide. The restrooms are nice, and located in the new carriage house; street parking is easy to find and free. I missed the gift shop and world's fair collection but will be sure to catch that next time. Not sure this trip has enough kid-friendly activities to keep kids interested. This is certainly a worthy destination for those looking to deepen their french roots on Bastille Day. As a bonus, the food truck "Holy Crepe" shows up on Bastille Day too.

This was going to be where i popped my city library cherry. Alas, I didn't even get to first base…read moreduring that inaugural visit. I had arrived on a weekday morning, only to find out that this branch didn't open until noon. Granted, I should have checked the website for hours, but it just didn't occur to me that a library would be closed at 11 a.m. Thus, I ran a quick errand, returned to wait in the parking lot, and then ventured inside at noon. The entrance from the parking lot is daunting. The automatic door is nice, but you walk into a weird vestibule without adequate signage telling you that pretty much everything is upstairs. At the information desk upstairs, I tried to get a library card, but they denied me because my driver license still has my previous address. It was within the city, but they still wanted a bill with my current address on it. I explained that all my bills were online and asked if i could show one via my phone, but they declined and demanded mail with my address on it. Any mail. That seems easy to fake, but whatever. I left and ended up getting my library card at a different branch. I returned a week later because the Jefferson branch was close to an appointment. New card in hand, I took a seat in one of the upstairs rooms to the right at a round table and tried to find an outlet for my laptop. A girl (not a worker) pointed out that outlets were hidden under bookshelves along the wall, not at the tables like in other branches. Moreover, there weren't many outlets, so if you couldn't sit next to one or didn't have an extra long cord for your laptop, you were out of luck. Wifi is free and speed is ok, just like at most of the other city library branches. You're not confined to a specific wifi seating area, either. I haven't wandered around much here. I know that there are a few computers with internet near the info desk (you need a library card to use them). The book selection looked decently fresh. Eh. *shrug* This library really is just my backup for when my preferred branches are inconvenient on certain days.

For a $30 fee you are given access to over a dozen historic homes, free horse drawn carriage and trolly rides, and admission to a holiday market with seasonal food, beverages, and gifts available for purchase. Parking is a bit difficult, but easier than Soulard. There a a table set up near the park where booklets with map and home information is handed out. Port-a-potties are scattered around the square. I felt very safe and thoroughly enjoyed talking with the residents in this area of St. Louis. They are very passionate and welcoming. Some of the lines can be a little long. I arrived around 130pm and had plenty of time to see every home before the tours ended at 5pm. I chose to walk for the scenery and the exercise, but the jingle bells on the horse drawn carriage were very festive to hear. It was interesting learning about the history of this area and hearing stories of the swans, arbnbs, and restoration projects from the folks I met while standing in lines to see the homes. I highly recommend this tour.1

These mansions, townhouses, and row houses are part of the early French settlement just south of downtown and includes the finest intact neighborhood collection of the architectural styles that were in vogue from the Civil War until 1900. The Holiday Parlour Tour begins in Lafayette Park and includes lots of homes that are not only beautiful, but beautifully decorated for the holidays. This is a neat event and is usually followed by dinner at one of the charming restaurants located around the square. This is my favorite of all the house tours. Grand South Grand Tour (spring Tour) is always a good one too. This years event will take place on December 14, 2008. Ticket info can be obtained at http://www.lafayettesquare.org.
