New Hampshire Department of Labor

New Hampshire Department of Labor

This is a review of the Inspection Division only. The Dept of Labor is best known for unemployment…read moreinsurance, workers comp, etc. This isn't about that. For some reason, this same department issues elevator inspection certificates. The problem is, they're really slow. At home, our elevator inspection certificate has expired. The inspector was here, nothing was wrong, we paid the fee, etc. Then I go to work and the elevator inspection certificate is expired. The property manager says the guy came, everything's okay, they paid the money, etc. So I get out of work & go for physical therapy because I screwed up my knee 2 months ago. Guess what's in the elevator? An expired inspection certificate. I'm not even asking about it. Sure, New Hampshire has no money. We have no sales tax and no income tax. But everybody's paying fees to these people and they can take months to send out certificates. And this is the same department that sends out unemployment checks? Okay, the inspection certificate showed up for where I live as I was writing this and it's only 10 days late. Let's see what happens when I go to work on Monday. I'll update this when the new certificates show up. A quick edit: When I wrote this, the inspection certificate in the building that I go to for physical therapy had not expired. I read it wrong. But it expired a few weeks later and no new certificate has been forthcoming. And at work, the certificate is still expired too. Amazing.

I was told I needed a Marriage Certificate (had one that was issued by Justice of the Peace). That was not sufficient for the DMV Associate. She stated it had to be from the state we were married. She asked her supervisor if what we had was sufficient. We were told it wasn't. We have been married over 40 years and had a pile of documents that showed our names etc. Have lived in two other states and never experienced being told a few times that we needed other documents. Extreme waste of time. Recommend bringing every personal document that you have to avoid being turned away. It's not like going to the DMV is a good experience- going back again seems like torture!

This is a review of the overall DMV system in NH. I am from…read moreNH, but have lived in other states, and even had a Canadian drivers license. The DMV system/phone system in this state is in need of improvement. This is not my first set of issues with this Department. When I moved home from Canada many years ago, I returned to the DMV to get my NH license again. My permanent license never showed up after the temporary was expired. I was on hold on the phone service for like an hour for 3 different attempts before my permanent license was mailed to me. They were not concerned about fraud after sending out supposedly 2 ID's that did not get to me. This was 15 years ago. I had been living out of state for the last 6 years, and need to renew my license, boy with Covid it was extra difficult. I was on hold a couple times trying to get an appointment. The first time I gave up after 30 min, the second time my call dropped about 45 min in. Then I finally got through after over an hour, just to get a question answered, and to make an appointment to get my license, Even when they had before times walk in hours, there was always long long waits, and if any documents needed fixing, you would have to come back and get in line all over again. On the phone when I finally got a woman she was kinda curt, going over what I needed to get the real ID. I am sure it is frustrating working for the DMV. On a positive note after dealing with the ordeal of getting an appointment, the experience at the Keene DMV was the least painful, and most friendly experience I have had dealing with the DMV system in NH. The problem with the phone system is chronic, and now that all these out of staters bought up property I am sure the system is super bound up. You would think with inflation and all this extra tax revenue that they would address staffing issues. It also really becomes classist when it takes an hour to get a staff on the phone to assist with legal documents(you need to work, or drive), if you are a normal office hours worker you almost have to take a day off just to be on hold to get the appointment, then another day off to go to the appointment. Why not just have a website for people that are already in the system(to simplify the amount of people needing to speak with someone), they can just make an appointment, without waiting on hold, for an unreasonable amount of time. Or the state could just hire a few more phone operators, and have a functional system. I did not experience these problems getting my license in British Columbia, or Colorado. I really with government would try to be more user friendly with the people it says it serves.

Just Go (#7) As a…read morevisitor of the State of New Hampshire we've actually driven through this state twice. In January 2012 we were driving through the City of Portsmouth on the way to Maine and happened to catch the USS Albacore submarine at the Albacore Park. We stopped and parked our car only to find out that they were closed for its annual maintenance until 2/18 beginning that day we arrived, 1/22. Bummer. USS Albacore museum tours are self-guided. On June 2023 again while passing through NH from MA we stopped in Franconia looking for the fabled stone face. We had a bit of a challenge locating this place. It should've been easy just off Highway 93 (Exit 34B)... this rock formation on the top of Cannon Mountain was supposed to resemble a human's face above Profile Lake but is no longer there. It collapsed on May 2003 due to natural forces. The museum was closed at the time but I followed a nice paved trail, a scenic pathway to Profile Lake and The Old Man of the Mountain Profiler Plaza. There were interactive instructions for a unique experience in viewing the Old Man of the Mountain. The Quaint Town of Littleton: We parked behind Main Street (metered parking) and walked down towards the RiverWalk Covered Bridge. The bridge is long and crosses over the Ammonoosuc River. It wasn't visible from the main road but is located behind Main Street. Beautiful setting with the mountains as backdrop. Main Street was busy that day... the town was celebrating Pollyanna Glad Day. This is a big deal for this town paying tribute to their hometown author, Littleton-born Eleanor H. Porter. A bronze Pollyanna statue is situated on the lawn outside the library on Main Street... there she was, the cheery and welcoming ambassador, New Hampshire's most welcoming attraction as the centerpiece of historic downtown. There was plenty to explore in this wonderful White Mountains community, unfortunately, our exploring was cut short when the skies turned gray and started to rain... hard! This was in June... Thank you for the experience, Great State of New Hampshire! Review #3788
