This is our family tradition going back to when I was little. My parents would take my brother and I to see this beautiful event take place in Bethlehem A.D. and to make sure we knew that Christmas was about baby Jesus being work and celebrating him. Now we get to share this tradition with your son and it's really special. Great job at putting this performance together.

Wow, I'm very impressed with my first visit to the Dragon Theatre. This production was extremely…read morewell done and I was highly entertained. I like the concept of the "2nd Stages Series", which provides funding and mentorship from Dragon's staff to other artists. At least, they are able to fully produce projects about which they are passionate. What a wonderful opportunity! THEME: --------- What happens when a guy has a life crisis and goes across the country visiting his ex-girlfriends? Maybe he's trying to learn from past mistakes, or maybe he is seeking forgiveness for his actions. This dark comedy is intriguing and keeps you wondering who he will confront next and how he chooses to handle each situation and personality. ACTING: ---------- Every single actor in this production is completely committed to his/her role. The entire cast is brilliant and really brings all the characters to life. It is very likely that audience members will see a lot of themselves within these characters because they are so easy to relate to. STAGING: ------------ The venue itself is very small with only 70 seats, all within close proximity to the stage. This creates an intimate setting for productions and works particularly well for this one. Not a single facial expression is missed, keeping the audience completely engaged. The director has done a fantastic job bringing to life the cruelty and awkwardness of past relationships and the possibility of redemption. VERDICT: ----------- If you enjoy riveting performances that depict real characters, you will enjoy 'Some Girls' at the Dragon. There are only 4 shows remaining, so catch it this weekend while you can! Friday (tonight) & Saturday at 8pm, Saturday & Sunday at 2pm. What are you waiting for? Tickets are available at https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?t=tix&e=54116348d4323909ac99116ff179c9a3. DATE TIP: This makes for a VERY interesting date, as it will probably open the conversation about previous relationships. At least you'll learn more about your date, but hopefully you won't hear TOO much! P.S. Thank you to Glenn G. for organizing such a fun night, and to Anna R. & Jennifer L. for being wonderful company.

A M B I A N C E + The theater seating is consecutive straight rows like an auditorium, so every seat has a good view. We had assigned seating. Theater was clean and cozy. + The chairs were comfy, not the kind where you end up stiff if you've got long legs. + There are ADA seating available, and specific shows with ASL interpreters. + Concessions and restrooms are super close on the right of the theater when you enter the front doors. + The acting, stage design, and music were superb. The stage design was very elaborate considering their low budget. +++ The fake snow falling outside the theater after our show was a lovely touch. Whether you're a musical lover or just looking for something fun to do, this place is a winner! I'll be back for another musical in 2025!

Ballet America's Nutcracker - The magical mechanical Doll

A great way to support your local arts and dance programs!…read more Redwood City's own Ballet America (ballet school) puts on this show every year in mid December, and includes ballet students from all ages (4 and up) to participate. Though the cast is primarily students (and even some parents), they do also use instructors and a few professional dancers to fill out the main roles (e.g. sugar plum fairy, snow queen, etc). The result is magical, fun and surprisingly polished for what you'd expect from a local, low-budget production. The performance period is short: only 2 days & nights, which makes sense considering all the young children involved. We attended the final 2009 performance on Dec 11. Though typically held at the Fox theatre downtown (which is in the throes of a foreclosure saga), this year it was held at the Sequoia High School theater (Carrington Hall), a surprisingly nice venue with a colonial Spanish design, built in 1904. As usual, we enjoyed the show and came away feeling like the Holiday season had REALLY begun. Until next year!

The 2010 Nutcracker production from Ballet America was astonishing in the quality of the dancing…read more Every year this production continues to improve in the choreography and the ability of those dancing on stage. This year was no exception. The professionals that accompanied the junior company dancers and those that were our featured dancers were incredibly accomplished and a delight to watch. I heard from folks in the audience that they felt the choreography was more difficult than in the past, and the dancers were excellent! The people I heard this from do not see dance productions that often, but have come to this Nutcracker in the past. The show date tends to fall on the first Friday or Saturday of December. I hope people reading this review will hold that date for the 2011 performance. I overheard another patron say the length of the performance was perfect, and was just as enjoyable as any of the major productions in the area. Redwood City is very lucky to have a production of this quality in their midst.

Menlo-Atherton High School Performing Arts Center - Outside near ticket booth

The M-A Bears are bringing music and the performing arts to Menlo Park in a big Roarin' way!…read more Back when I was in high school at M-A, (no, I'm not divulging my graduating year date!) the site of this theatre was known as J-Building. It was a dingy reflection of an era that was in love with asbestos and that horrid color, mustard yellow. I remember looking up at that nasty ceiling and seeing all the paper airplanes that had made it into oblivion. Forever stuck in that chemical wasteland, these paper wads were a credit to whoever had the best muscle and aim. Not me. I was a band geek...well, a Jazz Band Geek! With the recent retiring of 39 year M-A veteran and band teacher, Frank Moura, the PAC Band/Rehearsal Room is now officially named in his honor, "Frank Moura Hall". He will forever be a legend at M-A, having brought award-winning jazz bands to Europe, Reno and beyond since the 70s. Frank was, of course, my favorite high school teacher! No longer on the fringes of the school grounds, the Band Room is now combined with the Performing Arts Center. From the practice room, which is big enough for sectionals, is a hall way that leads to the backstage. Walking through, I felt like the football team must feel entering the field--like a super star (even without an instrument in my hand!) What is so phenomenal about its creation is the architectural design, worthy of any college campus. Not only is it built with state of the art sound technology and lighting equipment, but it holds 492 seats, an 80 musician orchestra pit and has a ticket booth. Its public performances serve the cities of Menlo Park, Atherton and surrounding communities. Lucky me, I got to meet the Center's new manager, a M-A grad and talented vocalist. It must be awesome to work at the school where you grew up. It's "almost" enough to wish myself back into my teens. Uh...almost! Its beautiful, metal "mesh-like" structure on the inside strongly reminded me of what it's like to sit under the filtered light of the campus oak trees. They really have done an excellent job combining modern touches and school spirit. The carpeting is a tasteful nod to M-A's colors: Maroon and Gold. (Go Bears!) My favorite detail, however, was a graffiti-like painting of a bear that greets visitors in the entrance. It's all about funding...this is a beautiful, physical representation of something that an affluent community has done that many places probably can not afford to do, but wish they could: Support the Arts! Here's to you, Frank!

I was able to see the venue while I was working to host a reception for the event. From the outside, the building is very abstract looking, and there are stadium style steps that lead to the main entrance. Once you enter, the walls are painted a deep and bold red color, with pictures highlighting the building process hanging on the walls. The theater itself is very nice and has a contemporary uniqueness to it. In the theatre, the ceiling is in angular shapes and all of the equipment in the ceiling is able to be seen by the audience through mesh metal coverings. Some of the cool things I noticed was that this new building has a great heating and cooling system, and the theater is virtually soundproof once the doors are closed. This was very beneficial to us who were working because we were able to set up, clean up, and break down without worrying about disturbing the concert. Overall, this is a very cool venue, and hopefully one day I can come to watch a performance.
