The cellar door itself is amazing - it feels historic as soon as you walk in the door, and the self-guided tour through the subterranean darkened spider-webbed cellar corridors is a must. Staff have always been friendly and knowledgeable every time we pop in. I really really want to like the wines more than I do, but that's just a personal thing of course. They're nice, but often the price point is a few notches above where my palate would consider it. That said, it's a must stop along one of Victoria's most underrated wine regions.
Lovely wines and amazing cellar We popped in for a quick wine tasting at this picturesque winery and ended up spending almost 2 hours there. We took the self-guided cellar tour which took us through a network of some super interesting underground cellars. The wines are really good quality so we had a really enjoyable wine tasting. read more

Lovely cellar door nestled next to the oldest planting of vines in Victoria and close to the centre of Great Western. An extensive range of beautifully crafted wines to taste with the Riesling and the Shiraz LSV being my personal favorites. No restaurant as such but you can assemble your own lunch by choosing items from the selection of hams, cheese and condiments that sit waiting in their well stocked pantry. Local is the theme here, with much of the food on offer being raised or grown in the Great Western and Grampians regions. The staff were very knowledgeable about the wines and exuded country kindness. Drop by Bests for lunch next time you need a break between Melbourne and Adelaide. PS Don't forget to visit the underground cellars while you are there! read more
Only wine can fix that feeling you get when you walk 3.6km up a mountain in the wind and rain to what's supposed to be a 360 degree view of the Grampians only to see white fog and nothing else. So it was with great relief that we came upon Best's Winery only 30 minutes from the national park. We started with the self-guided cellar tour which took us through their modern packing area, past giant wine barrels and old winemaking equipment, over creaky floorboards and down into their underground cellar, replete with a creepy dungeon and dusty bottles from the 80s and earlier. But we weren't there for the history, we're there for the booze! Best's has a dozen odd varieties of grapes in their vineyard, including some which aren't found anywhere else in the world! Story is that Mr Best just planted a little of everything when he set the place up to see which would grow best, and they've all lasted to rest of time to be available for tasting today...in a blend of all of them! Beyond me why you would throw so many unique varietals together when you could create small batches of interesting new wines! Thankfully some of their other wines like the Pino Noir and Shiraz are worth adding to the cellar but I feel it's a bit of a waste to lose new tastes in a mixture of many. read more

Fantastic family owned winery full of great wines and friendly cheer in a heritage environment. Our group of four had an excellent tasting here this afternoon. We were taken on a terrific tasting journey by the highly knowledgable and gorgeous Nicole who provided a superbly comprehensive overview of the range. Bests have some fantastic iconic wines. We also had a great self guided tour of the cellars. Bests is one of the key wineries of Australia. It's a must visit for anyone with an interest in wine. read more

History
Established in 1866.
Founded in 1866 in the Great Western wine region of Victoria, Best's Great Western is one of Australia's oldest continuously family owned and operated wineries. Best's is known to have some of the oldest vines in Australia and produces extraordinary wines with great longevity. Today, Best's Great Western draws from three vineyards, Concongella, St Andrew's and the newest addition, Salvation Hills at Rhymney. Henry Best's original Nursery Block, containing over forty different varieties, and his old Shiraz and Pinot vineyards are among Australia's most valuable viticultural resources. These are three important factors in the style and quality of Best's Great Western wines. They are elegant, mid-weight wines of great intensity and balance. Like all classic long-lived wines, age often reveals their greatest finesse. At national and international wine shows, Best's consistently garners awards and accolades.
