While I wouldn't describe the Best Western in Ludwigshafen as "modern" or "up-to-date", it's redeeming qualities of excellent service and more-than-generous breakfast bar made my stay here quite passable.
So as far as location goes, it's way off the tourist track and is definitely a part of the country primarily transited by locals and other local nationals. I wouldn't say I "look" German, but everyone spoke to me initially in German, which was kindof satisfying. Once I made it clear that German was not understood, they were quick to switch to English or find someone who speaks English to assist. It's right next to a big train station, but I couldn't find many stores/restaurants within a two to three block radius. Not to say there aren't any, I suppose I just don't know what the heck I'm looking for.
The establishment was what I would call "dated" in decor and furnishings, but they did have fast WiFi that is only accessible using a password you get from the front desk. The furniture was right out of the late '80s, bordering comfortable and uncomfortable. If you're there for business and aren't going to spend much time in the room, it's great. When you're stuck in the hotel for days on end, you come to miss amenities like recliners or sofas... or pretty much anywhere comfortable to sit. It's a bit minimalist, but gets the job done. And don't expect any fluffy American-style pillows. They use flat German pillows, being in Germany and all.
So the ups: super-helpful staff, and an amazing breakfast spread including (but not limited to) such items as Nutella, fruit, deli meats and cheeses, cereals, eggs, sausages, jams, juices, milks and tons of other items. It was great, and comes free with your room. Score! read more
