Our place while staying in Lisbon is a short 12-minute walk; and, as many times we've passed this place, I never knew anything about it until today! Who'd've known that this bookstore, Bertrand Livreiros, is (according to the Guinness Book of World Records) the oldest commercial bookstore in the World, dating back to 1732...?!?!? WOW!!! Well, it was about time we stopped in! The building its housed in is gorgeously clad in traditional Portuguese azulejo tile. The bookstore itself is very much a modern-day bookstore, selling all sorts of contemporary books and such. Its interior is very bright and clean-looking; bookshelves all very modern, with beautiful wood panels and accents. Otherwise, it's no different than any other modern bookstore, except for the fact that there's mostly books in Portuguese--they do have an English section, as well. So, on that note alone, I'd rate this place 4-stars mainly because of its extensive library. That said, the service we received easily promotes Bertrand's to 5-stars! We speak no Portuguese; however, when we presented a question to one of the clerks, she was so kind as to put what she was doing down, and help us find what we'd asked for; and, although, the first assist didn't help us exactly, she immediately took us to another part of the store for something closer to what we had asked. She even told us to come and hunt her down if we had further questions. Really customer-oriented! And, too, when checking out, the gal asked us if we wanted our book "stamped" as "verification" it was bought at Bertrand's--which she did in both English and Portuguese!! (It was a Portuguese-language vegan cookbook--a perfect start to learn the language!) How cool was that??? Muito obrigado, Bertrand's...!!! :D read more
