I really liked this castle and its setting. Our Sat Nav took us down a typically narrow Devon country road into a forrest that was warm and damp and smelled a bit like rotten fish which was likely the result of recently applied fertilizer to the farmland nearby.
The castle has an ample parking area compared to the one at Dartmouth, and get this: there's no charge! Located next to the castle is a little cafe and gift shop where you will pay for your entry fee and pick up an audio guide.
This castle is reportedly haunted, and I did have one very odd experience. Upon entering the castle I felt as though someone had pressed their lips up to my ear and blew hard. It was a bit shocking, but I figured it was probably just a change in the air or wind from the entrance.
The castle was originally owned by the Pomeroy family and later by the Seymour family. Although it is mostly ruins, it was interesting to hear the stories of ghosts and how the various rooms were used for entertainment or banquets. For more information, you can search the net as I vaguely recall the details. The best part about this castle is that the fee for entrance was cheap...I don't recall exactly, but I think it was about 4 pounds. read more
