Here in the Tri-Cities we are lucky. For 57.1% days of the week (i.e. 4 days of the week) during…read morethe summer, we have the opportunity to shop at a Farmers Market. The most famous is certainly Pasco's on Saturday & Wednesday. Richland has one on Friday. Thursday evenings from 4-8pm, Kennewick has Southridge Farmers Market. I've become a Farmers Market nerd as of late. There's nothing like taking my empty shopping bags to a market and walking away with them filled with produce grown just miles from where I live. It just tastes some much "gooder". If I had both a green thumb and stayed home enough to be able to water things enough, I'd totally try to garden. But that's just not in the cards for me. Enter my friend: local Farmers Market. This market is quite a trek away for this north Richland resident, but I just had to feed my curiousity. The market is in the parking lot of a newer strip-mall-y type places. I was surprised to see a large number of vendors jam-packed into the parking lot. I made a quick scan and found vendors which I've seen at other markets. It's all good. It's all good stuff. I picked up my newest form of crack: donut peaches. Oh man, these things tastes SO GOOD! I also picked up some freshly picked blueberries and strawberries. I like. My only dislike: the parking. This market had a surprising amount of traffic, and the parking area was overflowing. My newly-washed car had to offroad it onto a sandy field to park. Honestly....why should I complain, as Joni Mitchell says, they pave paradise and put up parking lots. Yeah....there's nothing wrong with NOT paving. I'll shut up and stop whining. Donut peach, please!

Alan, thanks for bringing the CSA (community supported agriculture) concept to the Tricities! For…read morethose of you unfamiliar with the concept, you pay a farmer at the start of the season for a share of the harvest, thereby supporting a local farmer and scoring yourself the freshest produce you'll get (short of growing it yourself). Schreiber & Sons offer both organic or conventional shares in small (feeds 2), medium (feeds 4), and large (feeds 6) sizes. If you aren't an adventurous or healthy eater, but strive to move in that direction, a CSA is an opportunity that you can't miss. I haven't run into anything that I haven't seen or eaten before (yet), but I've been very happy with the variety and quantity of the produce. The season runs approximately from the first week of May to the third week of November, weather dependent (the weather this year has been terrible, but Alan has supplemented sub-par harvests with locally grown lentils, split peas, and chick peas). Produce is dropped at several locations (North Richland, South Richland, West Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco); you choose your pickup location and grab your stuff at the designated time. Every Wednesday is like a tiny little Christmas when I get my box 'o culinary adventure! At $420 for a small, organic share, most of my grocery bill is already paid for the rest of the year and I'm feeling pretty smug about it.

The melons were awesome, though that one week when I got five of them was a little excessive for a single girl to try to work her way through alone! :) There have been a couple times when there were things I couldn't identify at all....one turned out to be an Armenian cucumber (the darn thing is as big as an arm). Anyway, if you can get yourself signed up for a CSA share, do it! It's a worthwhile experiment to see if you can figure out how to use everything and try out some veggies you wouldn't normally eat!

You've got a bunch of food trucks surrounding a huge indoor and outdoor seating area, so everyone can get exactly what they want without turning lunch into a hostage negotiation. Want tacos? Done. BBQ? Go for it. Craving something else? Odds are it's parked 30 feet away. Then there's the burger and hot dog spot inside that serves beer, because apparently they understand how adults make decisions. It's also located right in front of the Tri-City Dust Devils baseball field, so it's the perfect place to grab a bite before or after a game. And unlike half the places worth going these days, there's plenty of parking any day of the week. Great food, great atmosphere, tons of options, and one of the coolest places to hang out in the Tri-Cities. Just don't blame me when your biggest problem becomes deciding what to eat.

Like the public market sign you see at Pike Place Market or at Pybus, this is very similar, so I was intrigued. We had to check it out. We stopped in on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. Just like the market spaces at Pike Place and Pybus in Wenatchee, this is a public market space for local vendors around the area, selling crafts and goods, gifts and refreshments. It's not a very large market, but what they offer here are local gems. We walked around the entire market and there was always something that made us smile from the quirky offerings to the free samples from the food vendors. It was pretty quiet on a Sunday morning, so I assume it picks up around lunch time. It was nice to check out, and would do so again when in the area. There's a private parking lot right outside the entrance and bathrooms inside.
