History
Established in 1958.
In 1958 Berk and Beatty Bernard started Bernard Woodworking. The business manufactured wood windows. In 1969, the Hale Lumber Company was purchased and became Bernard Lumber Company. The window business at the original location was eventually closed. The entire business was moved back to the original location in 1977 after the completion of a new store. In 1991 Berk and Beatties three sons took over the business, Bryon as President and CEO, Bruce as Vice President, and Daryn as Secretary/Treasurer. In 1997 when the Heinrich Lumber Co. in Au Gres, Michigan was purchased and became our second location. In the fall of 2007 we started construction on our third location in Hillman, Michigan which opened in May of 2008. In the past 55 years, Bernard Building Center has grown, from a husband and wife with one pick-up to more than 70 employees and three locations. Meet the Business Owner: Bruce B.
My father started a window business when I was 2-years old. The business was located next to the house where we lived, we spent many hours in the window shop. While I was in Junior High School the local Lumberyard was purchased. I worked summers in the yard through my High School years. After High School I attend Ferris State University for 2-years and received an Associates in Applied Science Degree in Building Construction Technology. I worked in construction for four years then returned to the family business. I worked in our project sales area selling building materials. I took over my father's job of buying our lumber and commodity items when he retired, I also handle our marketing and advertising. I've been on the Michigan Lumber and Building Materials Association Legislative Action Committee. I've been Chairman of LMC's (Lumbermen's Merchandising Corporation) Michigan group of dealers and also Chairman of LMC's Building Materials Committee. I'm also a past President of our loc
