One of my local libraries that I love to visit as it's architecture is reminiscent of an old estate library with dark wood, comfy chairs and even a fireplace. I do wish the kids section was larger with more space for little ones to nestle in, but all good. I love the lucky day shelf. They have usually newer books, 4-6 different ones, that are in high demand and available without being on the waitlist. If you get lucky you get lucky. I have found some gems that way that I don't know if I'd normally find. They have the usual dvds and wide array of books and magazines. They host a ton of events here mostly catered to tweens, teens, seniors and adults from chess club to movie night, poetry circle and more. The staff is nice. Street parking only and it's limited, but I can usually get here on foot which is a bonus. Overall, a nice, clean, old-timey library. read more

Great place to read and work! The building itself is charming, Staff at front desk is kind as well.

It's in a cute neighborhood with neighboring cafes and stores. It's super small, though. Probably the smallest library I've seen. Hahaha.

This is my favorite branch in the Berkeley Public Library system. I am always surprised at how busy this branch is, no matter when I visit : ) Ever since they remodeled the Claremont Branch, which has been at this location since 1924, it's been a delight to walk in, peruse the stacks, stay to study or read, and check out books. The updated entrance is inviting and allows patrons access via steps or an ADA compliant ramp. I especially like the iron railing by local Berkeley artist, Eric Powell, depicting books and animals. There is a book drop on the outside of the building, at the top of the ramp, or you can drop off your books inside to the left, just past the circular front desk. The clerks and librarians are really nice and so helpful. There is always someone new at the front desk when I come in, but each time they're able to assist me with looking up availability of books in the system, putting books on hold, and checking books in and out. They have excellent hours and are open 6 days a week, usually from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or to 8 p.m., depending on the day. read more

I like to come here to work. Very quiet space and plenty of desks and tables--complete with outlets(!) for folks to use. Reliable Free wi-fi is hard to come by, but it's always on and flowing at this library! Kids area is pretty and up to date, but the only thing missing are activities for the kiddos. No puzzles, crayons or art supplies for the kids to play with. The exception is during crafts time though. The story times are amazing though--Mr. Michael is a fabulous storyteller and just an all around great children's librarian. He is patient and animated with the kids. read more

Very small library with not as many collections as some others in Berkeley, but the staff are always friendly and helpful. Convenient location on a nice mostly quiet street a block away from the post office and near Ashby/13. Computers/wifi are a bit slow sometimes but are adequate, and they have a good number of them. Very safe regarding COVID (as are all Berkeley libraries). A few places to recharge at tables. Can be loud with people tutoring kids at tables during the school year sometimes in late afternoons. I mostly really like the staff who do a lot to help you find items. read more

Such a cute library! It's a cozy space and has lots of natural sunlight for a nice afternoon reading. I got my first library card here since my childhood and it was a super easy process - only needed ID and proof of residency. You get to borrow 75 items at a time and they automatically renew twice for you! I definitely recommend going for a chill afternoon activity. read more

My little boy likes this branch because they have a lot of graphic novels for the young readers. I however am not impressed by the smallish selection of new books, tough parking, and the fact that this place is a bum magnet. read more

Cute little library with sweet staff, and (I hesitate to let word get out) a nice little glassed-in room at the back for working! I love this small library! The usual fellow I see at the front desk is the most friendly and pleasant library staff member ever. No cranks here, you're made to feel very welcome (even if you're paying an obscenely late fine...) I feel lucky to have access to this lovely nook of community space. Shame on the multiple reviewers leaving detached and disgusting comments about the homeless people who come through here. With winter approaching now, I'm glad displaced people can at least have momentary access to a safe restful place which can provide a warm fire, countless books, clean water, and a bathroom. Libraries are wonderful because of their accessibility to ALL. read more

Ok for what it is -- a small, old, local library branch. Points for being walkable from my apartment but it isn't exactly a major destination. Only one table with (TWO PRONG) outlets, slowwww wifi. Apparently it's going to be undergoing a major renovation soon so I'm sure that will make things more modern and useful. read more

Ever since my days as a Cal student, I have been seeking solace in this traditional library. As a nurse at Alta Bates I have been known to walk over on my breaks to get away from hospital stuff. All 3 of my sons got their very first library cards here, too! So, as you may be able to discern, this spot holds a dear place in my heart. It looks like a library should...there are shelves & shelves of books, helpful librarians (thanks, Dawn Swanson...you are a life-saver in finding kids' books!), a bathroom kept scrupulously clean and does not require a key. The magazine selection & movie choices are by no means comprehensive, but if Claremont does not have it, they can get things from Central quickly. I like the fireplace which is never functioning, but still gives the air of a reading room. I like that the kids' section is easy for children and pre-teens to feel equally at home in. My only issue with this section has nothing to do with the library, but the moms in Berkeley who think their screaming toddlers are adorable when expressing themselves. I beg to differ...In fact, I often find myself wanting to muzzle the little no-neck monsters and then give their Grown-Up a good scolding...but, this is just me. The librarians are no longer supposed to tell people to "Be Quiet, it's a library!"...Why, I have no idea. I guess in Berkeley it would be some sort of squelching ones Freedom of Expression or some other such rot... Tirade against noisy, misbehaving toddlers is now over. The library remains free of negative criticism, and continues to be a haven in an increasingly Yup-Scale neighborhood with no true services available. If you make a stop here, be sure to walk or ride a bike OR bring lots of quarters for the meters. The dreaded Meter Maid is known far and wide in this neighborhood and I am more than certain she fills her monthly quota within the first 48 hours of each new month! This is a great library to support & one that is heartily endorsed in our household. Check it out next time you pass by. read more

We take our grandchild to story and singing hour every Tuesday at the library with children's librarian Mr. Michael. He is a gift to the Berkeley community of children and caregivers. He loves what he does and it certainly shows. He is always upbeat, smiling, welcoming, energetic and sensitive to the needs of everyone present. It is in his room that children and adults get to meet each other in a friendly environment and enjoy the time together. Thank you Mr. Michael. read more

Stopped by today for the first time and was very impressed. Though a small library, for it's size, it does its job well. Very nice and clean facilities, computers to use, desks equipped with outlets for laptops and charging, organized shelves, friendly and courteous staff that smile all the time, clean bathrooms, designated children's, teens, and adult sections, decent selection of DVDs, magazines, CDs, and books - very impressed overall! Definitely much nicer than the downtown one - doesn't feel musty or dingy. People that used the library were courteous and nice as well. Will definitely use this library more often! I don't like coming to berkeley for much, but song time here with Mr Michael is the best!! My son loves his music program. It's definitely the best library program we have been to, and it's always packed. He has a true talent and it's pretty amazing this is offered for free. The library is beautiful too. This is a nice library but there are too many homeless people here. They are physically disgusting and make the hotel smell like urine. I do not want to check out any books from this library because I am afraid that they will have been made dirty by some homeless person. Aside from that it is a nice library. If they would kick out the homeless people I would go there every day. read more

What a clean, beautiful and updated building! I went there for the first time this morning for the Book Babies session. My 2.5-month-old Declan loved watching the other kids (he was the youngest on there). The man who led the songs and storytime was just delightful! There was a nice diverse group of babies and caretakers, and everyone played together well. Due to the overflowing attendance, the staff was kind enough to offer an additional session next week. read more

The Claremont Branch Library is awesome! I am a pre-K teacher and am in there often with the kiddos. It is a great walk and a very personable library. The staff there are VERY helpful and friendly, and even when they are busy they always make sure to find a way to help. Shani, the branch manager, always welcomes the children and asks about what they are learning, willing to find books that matches our curriculum. But above and beyond is Michael. This man is amazing! Not only does he come to our school for storytime, but he goes out of his way to talk to the children when we come in and has built lasting relationships with many of them. He grabs the children's attention like no other, whether it is through song and dance, his style of reading or his lovable demeanor. If you have not seen Michael in action please find the time! read more
