Like any bräuhaus, it has outdoor seating with table umbrellas and a deck with views of the lake. Inside is canteen-like, where you walk up an order what you please. We came here on a drizzly day, where the numbers of tourists can be counted on 2 hands. Some reviewers, obviously not from Yelp!, had recommended their smoked fish. We also ordered the child portion spaetzle with creamy mushroom sauce and their local Berchtesgaden Hell beer. It's a smoked whole trout (see pic) that is not overly smoky and easy to eat. It's warmed slightly so that you don't feel like you're eating jerky. It's not bad, but not great; but it's a local thing. Although child portion size, we could easily split the spaetzle for 3 for light lunch portions. The spaetzle was a bit over cooked and dry, but what can you expect from a place that doesn't see many tourists when it's raining outside. The beer was decent but also not great. I guess if there were more tourists and was sunny outside, things may taste better.

Every time I go here the place delivers a high quality meal and reasonable prices. Berchtesgaden / Königssee tour was the end of our Germany tour after hitting Normandy's 75th celebration. And after all these years, it was a time to return to the fatherland, and enjoy the mountains. Königssee is a surreal place, quiet, and very peaceful. The Echostüberl has a menu that would delight any one who enjoys good German/ Bavarian food. I ordered the Cordon Blue, while my wife ordered veal medallions. If you ever get up to the best Alpine town since Hitler left it in 1945, be sure to stop and smell and taste the food here.

This is a relatively straightforward local Bravarian pub/restaurant. You have your waiters all in traditional dress and the expected cozy beer house settings. I had a chance to sample their weisswurst/white sausages, which are traditionally served before noon and always freshly made (at the right places). This place did not disappoint .. with the sausages tasting extremely fresh and pairing perfectly with that tasty traditional Bravarian sweet mustard. (Tip: You do not eat the skin of these sausages - locals typically cut the sausage in half horizontally and take the meat out that way). The beer here was also just right and adding pretzels to the mix made the whole experience feel so ... Bravarian. If you're visiting this lovely part of Germany, it's not a bad idea to stop by and sample some of their nice traditional fare. The service was spotty but generally speaking, my experience was very good overall.

I fell in love with the trout tank and the fresh trout to the point where we went back two more times that week. Later in the early 80s we were back and I went there again and had to trout once more. It was amazing! Even after 45 years those trout loom large in my memory of Berchtesgaden. Anyone else remember the trout tank? Does it still exist? Do they still serve trout if it doesn't? Can we get a photo?
