The first time I went here, I picked up a Ruger 10/22 and was in and out in 20 minutes. That was great. They were super easy to deal with. The price was right. No complaints. Then I made the mistake of trying to order a rifle online. Due to NY state law, I could not take delivery until it was made compliant. When I called them to find out if they could do the work, they told me they could and to have the firearm sent there. Come to find out, it would take a month and cost nearly $150. At this point, they already had possession of the rifle, so when Long Island Gun Source notified me that they could do the same work in a week for $35, I was already stuck paying another transfer fee to Bensons (the full $75 + shipping). Then I developed sepsis from an infection and wound up in the hospital for a weekend. By the time it was all said and done, I just decided to send the rifle back to the online store (Grabagun, if you're wondering - another nightmare to deal with). I had to do this in person despite my infected leg, which forced me to use crutches, but when I got there, none of the older employees offered me a chair even though it was obvious that I was in a lot of pain. It took over 10 minutes for the YOUNGEST (go figure) gentleman there to get me a seat. Then the pain of paying the $75 for the privilege of being lied to. I have done business with them in the past and I NEVER expected this kind of treatment. Never again. read more

A friend and I went here years ago to buy our first guns and the owner knew it. He sold us overpriced surplus rifles that took overpriced ammo. When I realized the rifle I bought had a crack in the stock behind the receiver, the owner refused to talk to me and sent his wife out instead. Eventually his son came over and offered me a refund. There are other shops on the island owned by guys who value their customers and stand behind their products. I suggest you go to any of them before you try this sheister. Will never go back. The place was empty with 3 employees on the floor. Would have walked out with a $600 handgun on the spot but I am certain they pretended I wasn't there because I have long hair. They never even acknowledged I was in the store. I am all for small business but I am not going to force someone to take my money. Benson's was suggested by a friend. It was one of the BEST shopping experiences ever. I started my search for my first handgun last December. Benson's was my first stop. I met Henry (for the first time) and he spent 45 minutes with me answering EVERY question I had. I told him I was not ready to purchase a gun. I had just started navigating the overwhelming array of options. He never tried to sell me anything. I ventured out taking advice from gun owners. Everyone has their favorite stores and shared their opinion. I visited four other shops on Long Island. Each sales person was professional and patient. I decided to return to Benson's because of my first experience with Henry as well as their selection. When I arrived, Dominic greeted me with the same laid back "how can I help you attitude" that Henry had previously. Our discussion was paused due to a customer who know what he wanted, I said I can wait. Two minutes later Henry approached me. I told him Dominic was helping me. Dominic told Henry where we were and Henry picked up where we left off. I do not know how to express my gratitude for the time spent with Henry. It was like working with an old friend. There was no moment in the nearly two hours I was there that Henry tried to sell me. I honestly believe if I decided I was not satisfied with the options he would have guided me further. The fact is, I went into the store with a wish list of four guns. I purchased a gun (not on the list) that best suited my needs based on Henry's knowledge of ALL of the products and his gentle guidance. Again, no sales pressure. When I had narrowed the search to two, I asked Henry if we could go through the background check process. He said sure and let me circle the store one more time still asking questions. Dominic came over between customers to answer questions. Finally, Uncle Nick rang up the purchase and guided me through the accessories that come with buying a handgun. Once again, NO PRESSURE. There are gun stores that are closer to my house and work. I will not hesitate to travel East to Benson's for all of my future purchases. They team is amazing! read more

Having read the previous negative reviews and comparing those to my own experiences over several visits to the store I can only conclude that some people will can never be satisfied. Been there quite a few times. Bought my first shotgun, a carbine and 2 pistols, and other things. Last week I went in for some help with an optic and the guy behind the counter seemed very annoyed and didn't in any way try to help me. Not only did he seem clueless about the main thing they sell in the store, but he didn't even bother to ask someone else in the gun shop about a question about guns. Which in my opinion he should've known. Which is very unfortunate, there are a couple of other guys there that have been great and helpful. One, this store was very welcoming to this woman that had never set foot in a gun shop ever in her life. I told the kind man behind the counter what had happened to me, as well as what my needs were. He brought me over to the stun gun rack and talked to me about each and every one. He showed me how they worked, which helped empower me. I picked out the stun gun that I felt comfortable with. Hard to see bad reviews. I went there looking for a rifle and the guys there were really helpful . I bought a black rain ordinance rifle and a beretta shotgun . The price was great. The guy I was dealing with wasn't feeling well and still he was very nice and put up with my 100 questions with a good attitude. Huge fan of the Medford shooting range. Charlie is a class act, I'm surprised some other reviewers were down on him. He has a sense of humor and likes to tease sometimes but it's in good fun. The laws in NYS have become ridiculous so you can't blame anyone for being uptight. Started to come to Medford in 2010, since then it has actually cleaned up. I see it running better now than it has in a long time. For the price, location, and hassle free environment I give it a full 5 stars. I hope that Medford Shooting Range is around for a long time to come! read more

I have been to Bensons twice both times I was in need of pepper spray. I had never been in a gun shop and the idea of being in one scared me the first time I went. The staff was very friendly and after a minute or two I felt right at home. I returned to replace the spray I had dropped and broken. An employee asked if I new how to use it so I reiterated what the previous man had told me. Don't spray it if the wind is blowing at you. It's good for three uses. Spritz it once in awhile to make sure it works. Turns out only the first thing he mentioned was true. I am glad the second employee asked.
