Dr. Benjamin Mena is one of the best doctors around in the South Tampa area for the new patient to come and be checked out health wise. He takes his time to examine his patients which is a very good thing now days instead of being rushed in and rushed out like some of the other doctors will do in the area. My family has been a patient of Dr. Mena's for the past 2 years almost 3 years we have enjoyed him as our primary care doctor! He has doctor privileges at Memorial hospital, St. Joesph Hospital & Tampa General right in the area of his doctor office and Memorial Hospital is right across the street for easy access. His office staff is always friendly his nurses are always friendly and they will do the normal check the weight, temperature and fever to make sure your not coming down with a cold, flu or anything bad like. They'll take you to a private room where they'll ask you what brings you in to the doctor's office and then you'll wait for the doctor to come in and he'll exam you in the area your having a problem at. I gave it 18 months but it's time to go. If what you are looking for is a doctor who will spend two hours with you going over your blood work then Dr Mena is your guy. If you actually need something like a prescription or if you are sick? They aren't interested. If your pharmacy calls to refill a prescription they ignore it. When you personally call the office for a refill they tell you it will be 3-5 days before they authorize the rx. Not good when you have a massive case of hives and no steroids. That's just one example. Not only our family but other patients of dr mena have had stories of when they were sick and needed to see a doctor and called dr mena he declined to see them and us. We have asked repeatedly for him to call us-nothing. We have sent emails to his email. Nothing. Not worth the extra money. We are going to find a better doctor- and that is a low bar. read more

Dr. Mena is the type of physician that does not rush you and will ask a lot of questions to not just find your physical issues but any mental concerns you may have. He also works well with patients who have "white coat fright" (which is a fellow patient I know). He has a real concern about the high costs of medicines and services. I know he has a lot of last minute patients and will not give them "I can't see you for three weeks" routine. It does mean he will be working with patients into the dinner hour until he sees everyone. read more

Let me be honest... It was about time I got myself an Internal Medicine physician. No matter how much the diva in me debates about my age... I am no spring chicken. My life of excesses and hedonism must express itself somehow. So I need to keep myself in check. My Tickler ticks faster than most. I am feisty and my blood pressure knows it. My cardiologist referred me to doctor Mena. I called and they did not make me wait for a date. I just saw him. The forms had been mailed to me. No wait of any kind. Lots of parking. A beautiful office. Then there was Quinn, the friendly and let-me speak to you looking into your eyes- kind of man. He took notes as I went into a reverie of health foolishness and some bad decisions that felt awesome (and still do when I go out as the glutton I am.) Other stories involved grief and he was not just sympathethic, but empathetic (which I love in people.) Then there is Doctor Mena who asked just the right questions and said the right things... and admonished me a bit for my terrible sleeping habit of watching TV for Hours and reading with my glowing kindle on my bed until exhaustion takes in. No soothing rituals. I guess now I have promised to create a baby ritual for myself... read in the living room... wash my face and put all my creams....and lower the lights an hour before.... and make my mind belief it can ever shut up. I promised to go to bed at a particular hour and wake up at another particular hour. Even if I get one hour of sleep I must wake at the hour established... I also promised to walk in the sun out in the balcony as soon as I wake to tell my body that that is what day looks like. He was just so enthusiastic about it I could not say no... I must see him in a month to report my progress and hear about all my blood work results. Hummm, I can only imagine all the reviews I will write in the middle of ranting insomnia! But hey! It's very upsetting that I call day after day to schedule an appointment and NO ONE has bothered to return my call. I left a voice mail Monday and still no call back. Your voicemail specifically indicated not to leave multiple messages, but how do you expect a patient not to when you don't return a simple phone call. By the time I need an appointment I won't be sick any more. Please do your self a favor and look for a a different doctor. read more

Pretty simple: I arrived for a scheduled appointment at 10:15. After 30 minutes I inquired if everything is ok, and at the office they said that all is fine, and they moved me to an inside room. I sat there for 20 more minutes and then just left. Having waited/wasted a whole hour on waiting. read more

I arrived 15 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment. I waited over an hour without being acknowledged regarding them being behind. I can only assume this was the reason for the delay. I went to the front desk to let them know I was leaving. "Okay, I'll let him know," is what I was told. I am FULLY aware there's almost ALWAYS a delay when visiting a doctor's office. I had to wait 2 1/2 hours yesterday and today for two separate appointments my mother had. But the difference here is I was never made aware of the delay, I wasn't acknowledged, I wasn't asked if I was interested in rescheduling. Everything happens for a reason. read more

It's hard to top a physician like Dr. Mena. He is down-to-earth, he never rushes with his patients and he takes your wants/needs into consideration. He trusts his patients and he will always go above and beyond to take care of you. I've had him as an internal medicine doctor for four years and I pray I never have to find anyone else. Dr Mena, The best internist I have ever had the pleasure of being their patient. A dedicated caring man who always spends time to find the root of the problem and is always concerned about your well being. I have been in his care for 5 years now and I am still impressed at his ability to listen and patience during examinations. At a first glance as a New Patient with Dr. Mena, I thought he was going to be a good doctor for me to stay with a my primary care. On my first and only visit, he seemed very professional and detail oriented. He ordered Lab work for me to have done and an untra sound for my thyroid. 48 Hours later the Lab results came back and I was able to view them on line based on the software Dr. Mena uses. Thankfully everything came back looking pretty good and thyroid was negative on issues. However, my cholesterol came back Extremely High and so naturally I called his office to chat with him. I was very rudely informed that Dr. Mena "doesn't do phone calls"! I said well if I have to come back in for a visit I will but can you have the Dr. call me so we can discuss it please. I never received a call back that day. I followed up with a second call the next day. I spoke with the same rude front desk guy and he said he gave Dr. Mena my message. This was a friday and I explained that I'd really like to speak with Dr. Mena but he wanted to he could call me in a prescription for the high cholestoroal before I came back in but I'd like to hear from him before the weekend starts. No call back again. Third time, I emailed the Dr. from their Lab Results email they had sent me 3 days earlier asking if the Dr. could call in a prescription for me and contact me on Monday after the weekend. Again today passed and no reply for the Dr. or his office staff. I feel like this guy just accepted the money from my Healthcare provider and my co-pay and he is no longer worth any more of my time or investment. Check out other Primary Care Physicians before trying this one out! He has a poor "beside manner" and does not have the patients best interest in mind. read more

I brought my mother, who is elderly, in to see Dr. Mena as her primary doctor. First of all, his staff is wonderful, caring people. I love the nurse practitioner too. My mother sees a lot of doctors, but Dr. Mena's staff is a breath of fresh air. Now, as far as Dr. Mena, he seems knowledgeable and caring. Makes one feel at ease. I waited 10 minutes to see him which was great. He took his time. Treated her with respect. I felt comfortable asking him questions. His office is clean and there is ample parking. My Mother and I have been seeing Dr. Mena for several years now and up until one year or so everything seemed wonderful. However after they hired a few new office "HELPERS" thing took a huge nose dive. Or went to he77 in a handbag if you will. Suddenly when we needed refills for various medicines we were told that they would Fax it to our supply point be it Publix Pharmacy, Express Script Tricare or express Scripts Verizon. When we never got the required Medicine I would call the distant end and was told "WE NEVER GOT THE FAX" I would call Dr. Mena's office and got they said "WE FAXED IT" I wish I could tell you how many times this has happened but it is very safe to say over a dozen times and that is not counting the times I personally went back to Dr. Mena's office and demanded a Hard Copy of the script so that I could hand carry it to a local Pharmacy to make sure they received it. P.S. I want to add that several of those times when I got to a Publix Pharmacy they told me that suddenly less then 5 minutes ago they had received the Fax from Dr. Mena's office, So it proved to me that when some ones back was against the wall they could do it correctly.. I am very unhappy that this problem has been going on for over a year now and no ones at Dr. Mena's office seems to give a Good gosh dern about finding out what the problem is or getting it fixed.
