Dr. Benefield has treated me for nine plus years. I am diabetic, and he keeps close watch for changes in my vision and my retina. I had cataract surgery on both eyes about 2 years ago with no complications and wonderful results. Recently the right eye seemed a bit cloudy. He brought me in yesterday for a laser treatment to remove the growth of cells over my artificial lense. Again, the results are excellent. I woke up with clear vision in the operative eye, and there is no residual pain or discomfort. This procedure was subject to a deductible of several hundred dollars from Humana, plus a fixed fee for the surgery center itself. I feel that my outstanding vision at age 73 is well worth the fee. Dr. Benefield and his staff have always been very courteous and helpful over the years. There have been one or two appointment glitches, but those are only minor inconveniences which also happen in other medical practices. I highly recommend this office after nearly 10 years and I'm thankful to have this quality of service here on the Gulf Coast. read more

Scheduled 2 appointments and there was no record of the first appointment so rescheduled a second time. Went to the second appointment and they did not show my appointment again. I let the reception desk know I was walking out the door. She went to check with someone to see if they could squeeze me in. Have waited 3 weeks for someone to let me know my results. Have left 4 messages over 2 weeks and no one has returned any of my calls. Spoke directly with the Office Manager to share the saga of such poor service. She assured me that Dr. Benefield was going to personally reach to speak to me. Well, still awaiting a call from anyone at the office. I let the Office Manager know in good conscience I could never recommend their office to any of our employees who work at our hospital when they ask me, as HR Director, who would I recommend for glasses or eye care. It is apparent that the clinic does not care about your business. But if someone ever does contact me, I will be happy to express my displeasure with their pitiful performance and how they treat patients. read more

I've had about six surgeries by Dr. Benefield over the years, mostly for glaucoma related issues and one emergency surgery for 55 pressure in one eye. He is an outstanding eye surgeon and all have gone well. Its kind of ridiculous to read some of these posts about having to make a small copay and some other such minor complaints, but many people love to complain, especially when it's done more or less anonymously. I can only give one star. I thought it was very odd to be charged a co-pay when going back for my six month follow up. asked the receptionist why it wasn't included with follow-up after surgery and she stated no since it has been more than 90 days. Also, maybe I wasn't clear enough when speaking with them at the beginning that I specifically did not want mono vision after cataracts are removed. i did pay for distance in both eyes, but instead one sees up close and the other sees as requested: very good and clear for far away. Be sure everyone you speak with knows what you want and gives you the service you request and pay for. I most likely would have not written this review, but think it is not right to charge for followup. If anyone reviews this good luck in your search. read more

Beware!!! They are another part of the unholy up charge system! Had the best insurance available through BCBS! I paid my copay of $15 and a month or two later started receiving bill for an outstanding debt of $35! This was a simple eye exam, nothing special. Tried to talk to them and find out just what was going on but too no effect! They dinged my credit and keep sending bills for 4 years!! This is the god honest truth so help me god!!!!! Dr. Benefield messed up my cataract surgery to a small degree. This was paid for out of my pocket to the tune of 6k'ish. My family BCBS insurance doesn't cover eye care. For a small additional fee of 850.00 per eye I elected to receive the lens implants that'd allow me to see far, vs. up close. One eye worked out well the other not so good, in fact the 2nd eye vision is worse than before the surgery. He said that it's ok in that if I close one eye I can see far and if I close the other I can see close. NOT what I bargained for. He did mention a "pro bono" fix early on but after two years I gave up. I have since moved to another doctor who actually took the time to explain my new symptoms, other than "a jelly type substance that's pulled loose a little" causing blurred vision. They have you stacked up like cord wood waiting for your 3.5 minutes of quality doctor intervention. By the by, one of the other doctors told my wife who was a patient that there's NO WAY we paid for my cataract operation...she actually argued with her. I mean....like, we paid the darn bill right. As patients WE DO have the right to change doctors, much to my chagrin. I'm just an old dinosaur, old dog who's faithful till the faith runs out. read more
