This restaurant/bar/events venue/and oh yes, bookshop! is on a wonderfully picturesque road near Berrima in the Southern Highlands. We chose it for our wedding anniversary lunch, and so noted on the online booking system. Interestingly, we weren't able to get a 12.00 booking but 12.15 sailed through. Upon arrival, we enjoyed the sandstone paving and gardens between carpark and entrance. We had a great table by the massive fireplace. Service was professional, polite, and prompt...not by some of the great characters we've had on past visits, but no complaints, particularly as the place was full with big parties coming in all the time. I suspect the booking time was a very effective approach to ensuring good service. We browsed the more than usually interesting collections of new books on one side and pre-loved books on the other for the few minutes until our burgers arrived. They were tasty, attractive and very filling (no dinner needed that night!). The menu is not exceptionally adventurous, but I did think our side salad of zucchini, quinoa, buffalo mozzarella and herbs was unusual and very toothsome (how often do you eat dishes spelt with both "z" and "q"!). The whole experience is in a beautifully restored wooden barn. Great character, just right for a reliably satisfying meal. The fifth star will come when the menu takes more chances...but why should it, when there's so much else to appreciate? BTW make sure you visit the facilities! Delightful! read more
