Hello, This is a fellow 7th grader at I Can Academy. I have to say, the staff are extremely nice…read moreand caring! Most of them are parents, so they have proper experience with this kind of stuff. The best part about the staff is that they don't just focus on teaching, they focus on YOU. The teachers have less students which means they can focus on students individually. Other schools have teachers which focus on the class as a student body. The teachers want to know YOU and what YOU need help on and what YOU like. It may be smaller than your average school, but makes up for it for the indivual care the teachers put into the students. It's a great cross between homeschool and school, where you have less stress and all the kids are chill and you get all the knowledge you need. It's a great low-stress alternative with social aspects to homeschool. ICA also has class 2 days a week (Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday). ICA helps kids LEARN subjects at an more appropriate pace and is great with helping each student GROW to be the best version of themselves. ICA will make your child SOAR into the wonders of fun and low-stress! Thanks ICA!

The office staff was so warm and welcoming, and our daughter loved picking out her supplies to create her own I Can Academy bag. Her teacher was incredibly kind and created such a positive, engaging learning atmosphere. During the class, I even heard my daughter shout, "I can read!" When it ended, she was smiling and excited to bring home new flash cards to practice blending sounds. A few days later, she had an assessment at a private school for kindergarten, which included sounding out letters and blending them. She did so well--and I couldn't believe how quickly the lessons from the academy had already made an impact. This is absolutely the place to go if you want a warm, child-first learning experience. We highly recommend it!

As an immigrant that came here over 30 years ago from VN when I was just 8, I saw the math…read morediscrepancy in the way we teach math in the US vs other countries. Many years forward with kids of my own now, I taught my daughter the way I learned it and ran out of ideas not knowing if I was giving her too much and unsure at what level she can actually function at. She has just been a sponge and I was afraid maybe I'm going beyond healthy. I sought out RSM so she can find other peers that likes math as much as she does. And certainly, one of the best decisions I made to give her self confidence, a challenge to her spongy mind, something to keep her slightly busy and off the TV. I have been able to incorporate what she learns at RSM, to what I think is a natural progression in her skills. Yes your kid will have to have a focus for 2 hours. But believe in them, mine always seemed like she was fidgety and wont last past 15 minutes, but some reason she always seems to have fun coming out and asks for more challenging questions.

They offer a great program that teaches kids critical thinking instead of just pushing worksheets…read more Unfortunately, they do not have developmentally appropriate expectations of 10-11 year old children, especially boys. That sets them up for punitive actions and creates a negative attitude from the teacher towards students and eventually students toward the teachers and the school. If your child cannot maintain 100% focus and concentration for two hours do not send them here. They will be penalized. Students are expected to be seen and not heard here. While my child (like most) does need redirection at times, I am told from his current teachers, that he is a good student who works hard and wants to please the adults in his life. He enjoys school and learning. As a fifth grader he has a 3.75GPA. He is a bright, friendly, kind and creative person. His teacher didn't believe that my son's acid reflux or chronic cough were real. She said to me that she thought he was faking them. Both have been treated by a doctor. The teacher did not believe my child when other children were throwing things and blamed him for interrupting the class because he asked them to stop. Her reply to me was that she couldn't see what was going on behind her. Fair enough but that is a dereliction of her duties and doesn't address my son's concern or stop the situation. Fortunately, they never threw anything harmful at him. The teacher blamed the victim is this minor but persistent bullying. The teacher said, "so" when my child told her there was a mosquito in the room. He came home with several massive welts all over his body after she did nothing and ignored him. Simply opening the door could have helped. At minimum she should have acknowledged his concern in a respectful way and explained that nothing could be done. In our experience, the Russian School of Math (at least at this location) is only prepared to assist high level, advanced children. I was told point blank by the director that they expect "more." Only go here if you are already a math honors student. They are not prepared to help average or above average students. They certainly won't be able to help students who are weak in math. That's fine if that is their niche but they need to be upfront about who their services are for and not accept students that do not fit the criteria. It is setting children up to fail and hate math. By their own admission, RSM issues "vanity" grades. No child will receive less than a B, and those are only the ones doing very poorly. I believe this is a misguided attempt to get students to return regardless of their actual performance or mastery of the material. They say they will allow class swaps (room permitting) but when actually requested to do so, they will not. They have an extremely convoluted payment system that is difficult even for this accountant to get her brain around. They did issue a refund for classes paid for but not attended after we gave two weeks notice of withdrawal. Given the teacher's open disparagement of our child we chose not to return him to such an environment, even for that two weeks. Do not attempt to start this program mid year. This is a full year program and they will "catch you up" if you start mid year with private lessons (at an additional cost) before placing your child into the classroom. However, that proves to be an avalanche of work that is obviously overwhelming. It is a lot to expect a child to recover half a year's worth of work. Even for one that likes math. Despite the valuable math work, this ultimately proved to be a mentally unhealthy environment for our son. That was predominantly due to the specific teacher (backed by the director), however, it was also do due in large part to the inherent nature of the program and the rigidity of the director. Only go here to advance your already advanced math student. We've had a dozen kids start here from our regular school and most are not returning.
