The Towers themselves are perched on the top of a large cliff, which has been heavily eroded in the past and is the reason why there are only partial remains of the church left standing. Due to its location on the north coast, the towers lend themselves to some lovely photographs with the sunset to their rear and the sea to one side. There is a large stony beach at the base of the cliffs, which is ideal for dog walking rather than bathing, as the Thames Estuary leaves it somewhat muddy. Also be aware that the tide can come rather far in at certain times of the year, partially cutting off some areas at the base of the cliffs!! There are reputed to be a decent number of fossils to be found along the beach, especially following storms, though me and the dog have never found anything exciting. There is ample parking in the vicinity of the towers, good paths suitable for wheelchairs and buggies along the cliff top. There is also a pub very close by and a small shop/amusements arcade associated with the nearby caravan park. All in all, a nice place for a picnic or for a stroll.

The Full English Breakfast itself was delicious, especially the sausage but our toast was only brought out after the meal despite us reminding them about it. We ordered a pot of tea and again had to remind them about it only to be told that they were busy with other orders (fair enough, but there are nicer ways to say that). I asked if I could at least have a glass of water and was told it would come out with the tea. We were standing at the bar with clean glasses and water at the ready and were refused a glass of water! The staff here need a serious attitude adjustment.

Before or after seeing Canterbury Cathedral, take some time in Buttermarket Square. Literally in…read morethe shadow of the Cathedral, Buttermarket is a great area for shopping, listening to the buskers perform, or checking out the famed WWI War Memorial Statue. With more than 500 years of history, the Square has served many different purposes. In its early years, it was known as Bull Stake ... bulls were tied up overnight to keep the meat tender before they met their great demise. Rumors and written history suggest there was a theater here once, and, during its time directly connected to the Cathedral, an escape tunnel for monks. And, of course, for many a-century, it was an actual butter market. If interested in the history of the Square, there's the Old Buttermarket Pub. Good eats, too! The most meaningful piece of history is the WWI War Memorial in the center of the square. A plaque reads: In grateful commemoration of the officers non-commissioned officers and men of canterbury who gave their lives for God, King and Country in the Great War 1914-1919. This memorial was erected by their proud and thankful citizens. "True love by life true love by death is tried; live thou for England we for England died" With the shops, pub, memorial and the rest, Buttermarket Square a great place to stop before going or after seeing the great Canterbury Cathedral.

The owners are very friendly and down to Earth, and while it may be a bit tricky to find them on a busy evening in the bar, they're quick to sign you in and show you to your room. We even had our room upgraded to a bigger larger bed. The room is modest but clean and nice and certainly fair for the price. The booking also comes with a complimentary breakfast (my first English breakfast) which was good. Big. Britishy. But good. Our only complaint arose when someone decided to enter the previously empty room across from us and start having sex all night with the door open. Old building + thin walls + weird sex & slapping sounds = really unhappy Jenny. While after a solid but polite 'shut up' conversation, they did finally go to bed. Or at least closed the door. But the next morning after an odd apology from the owners combined with an unfortunate voice recognition during breakfast we realised that the slapping sex couple were friends with the owners of the hotel. The whole thing was a bit odd. That being said, the owners were quite accomodating and even allowed us to keep our room until we left to catch the coach back to London. To be honest, this is the sort of place that's best for chatty folk who are looking for something relaxed, chilled and to get a taste of town life. If you're looking for a bit more a romantic weekend getaway, choose somewhere else.

There are some restaurants with views here in town. Forget the "Lobster Shack" though, not worth it. Grab your dinner elsewhere and just come for the sunset and a walk. There's parking along the beach and more carparks in town if you don't mind a walk.
