I only live around the corner from this Camden library branch, which is Holly Lodge. And even up to this day, I will always use the services at Highgate Library, for hiring out DVDs, PC printing and the photo copy machine. And I even reserve books and DVD from Highgate Library. Highgate Library is literally right next door to Highgate Cemetery, the place of Karl Marx's tomb.

The cafe inside provides some yummi food and has many options. Its connected to the swimming pool and quite close to the tube line, schools and shops. However the library is usually full of young teenagers who, hardly understand the concept of a library. They speak very loudly and nobody tells them otherwise since there is hardly any official librarian strolling along to keep peace. I cant fathom why is a library noisy, yet this one is very often too much to work in. Not only the young teenagers but even the kids can yell their hearts out and you'd still hear it in your seat, since there is no walls separating the kids area from the adults section, just a bookcase.

There's also a massive childrens area with games and books so prepare for occasional noise at storytime. There's an OK selection of novels and reference books and a fairly big range of DVDs for hire that you pay extra for. It is a lot quicker to use the new machines to check books in and out, or use your online account now to reserve or order books. The only thing that stumps me is the lack of signage for different genres or even pointing out the fiction and non-fiction areas. There are a few titles on the shelves but I think this could be improved a lot as within novel section, books are split into crime / sci-fi etc with no apparent indication of this.

It is possible to book a time slot (max 1 hour per day), but if the computer is free when down there, it might be possible to use it for another hour. For those who lack IT skills, it is possible to attend an IT class, which is suitable for all age groups and levels, whether beginner or advanced. If you live in Camden, try it out, we do pay council tax so try and use the councils facilities as much as possible and save money

Near the foot of Highgate Hill is the famous Whittington stone, which is supposed to mark the point where Dick Whittington, on his way out of London, heard the sound of bow bells chiming 'turn again Whittington, Lord Mayor of London' and decided to return to the city. The cat is harder to explain; there is no evidence that Dick Whittington ever had a cat. Maybe the association with the animal arose from the type of boat he used for trading, known as a 'cat'. The present sculpted cat on the top of the stone was not added until 1964. The story first appeared nearly 200 years after Whittington's death. Other characters were added, and Dick Whittington became a favourite pantomime in the 19th century. Many legends surround Old Highgate and Hampstead, and there is an old belief that if Whittington's Stone is ever removed or if any harm should befall it, great change and disaster will fall upon the neighbouring area. Of course, this myth is probably based upon the fact that the Stone is one of Highgate's oldest landmarks, and therefore, it would be bad luck to remove it. The real Richard Whittington was apprenticed to the Mercers' Company in the City of London. He became a successful trader, dealing in valuable imports such as silks and velvets. All his goods would have entered London through the river quays. Whittington was three times Master of the Mercers' Company and four times Mayor of London. Richard II and his successor Henry IV were important customers for Whittington. He supplied silks for the wedding dresses of the daughters of Henry IV. Richard Whittington's fortune was used for many charitable purposes, including almshouses, a library, and also public works such as improvement to the water supply and a public lavatory. The Whittington Charity still exists, and provides housing and financial help.

The grounds of the Kenwood House in Hampstead are one of my favourite places in London. With lots of green grass, ponds, small forests and hidden areas, it's just a lovely place to be.

St. John's Wood is the perfect place for me to go for a quick read or a novel that will last well over the week! The blue awning outside is just as eye-catching as most of their reads! The librarian said as long as I had my passport (which I did) I could get a guest card to the library, which allowed me to log onto the catalogue and the web for free. I couldn't take out any books without upgrading to a normal membership card, which I would need to do with a letter stating my address, but I didn't want to right then so it didn't matter! The card also works in all libraries in the city of Westminster. Although I was purely going for the computers, I got a look around the very small library as well. There was not very much choice, but I was told you could order books from any of the other larger Westminster libraries and they would be posted there. When I went, on a Thursday morning, they seemed to be having a storytelling activity for young children (who's section coincidently looked one of the better). It appears a good place for the St John's Wood parents (or perhaps more probably their nannies) to take the kids to entertain in the friendly atmosphere for an hour or two.

Hi, I recently went to register to Golders Green library and I was very disappointed about the…read moretotally unpoliteness, unwelcoming manners in general and of the manager in particular: I was refused a library card because my bank statement was not a valid proof of address! I was mostly upset when the person laughed at me in my face, as I explained my surprise and feeling of being unwelcome. I am a book-worm and have other three library cards in London, and this has never happened before. The same afternoon, I went to the Hendon Library where, instead, I was immediately welcome, helped and registered regularly. Same Barnet Libraries, different manners policy. Maybe the multicultural university envrionment of Hendon influences positively? I have the feeling that Golders Green Library is more for an elitaire restricted chosen group, careful of not being disturbed. p.s. As a library is very poor, noisy and doesn't offer a meeting point for the community, it is mainly reduced to a kinder-garden for the mums of the selected restricted group... lol!
