Adventure Kingdoms (aka a playground fit for a princess) Huhhh huuhh hugh, wait one minute while I gather myself..... Within 5 minutes of entering Lough Key Forest and Activity Park, I was reduced to the age of 5 years old. There was so much to do and so little time, but I had unfortunately, had made the monumentous mistake of only setting aside an hour or so, to "put a check in the box" beside this local attraction. If I can save just one person the disappointment I felt when (for the 3rd time) my girlfriend tried to usher me out of the park, this review will have been worth it. This is no where near your average park. You could easily spend an entire day, getting lost under the glowing green canopies of the forest or swept up in the romance and history that lingers near the bridges and brooks. Simply put, it has been one of the most beautiful places I've had the pleasure to have visited to date.

It's a beautiful place and designed for walks and picnics. It has toilets and you can potter around the lake area to the coffee bar, but you'll need a fair level of fitness to go to the top of the waterfall as it's quite steep. The water is so clean with a peaty hue given Ireland has wonderful peat bogs - an incredible eco system of its own. Now it ain't the falls of Angel, it ain't Niagara nor Dunn's River; this waterfall reaches 50ft high and is situated at Glencar Lough, and it inspired perhaps Ireland's greatest poet William Butler Yeats who put it much better than me in his poem 'The Stolen Child' 'Where the wandering water gushes From the hills above Glen-Car, In pools among the rushes That scarce could bathe a star' Glad we went, once. There were some hikes along the greenway, but we decided to bike the greenway instead. We ended up just doing the short walk at the visitor's center and the coastal walk. Both were very scenic and we enjoyed the views. Both were easy and about 1-2 km long. I think it's worth stopping here, we just only spent a couple hours exploring.

We crossed the Michael Davitt bridge onto Achill island and drove past a mobile Ulster bank van. We had Keel as our destination as we negotiated the narrow roads and meandering sheep who were everywhere and who see tourists as an inconvenience. The entire experience was a tad spooky as despite being a fine day in early summer the entire island was shrouded in mist the whole time we were there and we were there about three hours. We chose Keel as my wife used to holiday here as a child. Her family arrived with a tent to a caravan park and pitched up 15 yards from the wild Atlantic. Travelling west from here the next land is the USA. We got to Keel and the caravan park and we walked along the beach with the mighty blue/green Atlantic Ocean roaring at us as my wife relived fond memories of a stark, haunting very beautiful wilderness. Hard to believe that this stark, rugged island has been continuously inhabited from 4,000 years BC. Wow now that's impressive.
