"Take me down to Belfast City, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty"
-- Guns 'N' Roses
Okay, okay, I got one word wrong ... GNR didn't say Belfast, but he darn well should have.
This ain't your father's Belfast. Or even my childhood memory of Belfast during "The Troubles." In my time in this great Irish city, I saw no army of cops clashing with Irish kids with Molotov cocktails. No shelled out buildings. No impoverished group of children playing in rubble. No bombings. No arrests. This city has done a 180 from the days of yore. Come in, the water's fine.
Based on my experience with lines, the biggest attraction is the relatively new (2012) Titanic Belfast museum. You heard that right: Titanic Belfast tells the story of Belfast's maritime heritage; it's located at the one-time Harland & Wolff shipyard (where the Titanic was built). If you come to Belfast via ferry, you may want to plan to see it first ... it's right there.
There's Belfast Castle: A beauty, if I may say so myself. If you like the U.S. Capitol, you'll love the rich history and beauty of Belfast City Hall. Green thumbs will love Belfast Botanic Gardens. And shoppers will love, love, love St. George's Market.
Granted, "The Troubles" hasn't been erased from the history books. The top tourist site in Belfast is a prison, the Crumlin Road Gaol prison where many members of the IRA were incarcerated, is a must see. Think like you think at a German concentration camp ... there is always dark history that needs to be seen.
