This was one of the stops on our walking tour of Amsterdam.
Originally, this area was home to religious women only. It was similar to a convent, but the women were only made to take a vow of celibacy. They were allowed to leave at any point in order to get married.
Our guide told us that this is still an all female housing development, but men can visit. However, approval from neighbors is needed to let the men stay overnight.
All the homes face an inner garden-like courtyard, which is surprisingly peaceful, given that the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam in not far away.
There are two entrances to the courtyard, and despite this being a tourist attraction, of sorts, you are still expected to be respectful.
There is a large, fairly obvious church located on the grounds and a hidden church located right across from it. The Begijnhof is also home to Amsterdam's oldest wooden house.
If you're looking for a little respite from the noisy and crowded streets of Amsterdam, pop in here for a few moments, you'll really enjoy the peacefulness.
