The Worship Center - Derby Campus…read more This review is coming from a pastor. First of all, Bishop Van Moody is an absolutely awesome man of God. He is an excellent preacher and teacher, and he clearly has a real heart and compassion for people. He is also very strong in the area of leadership and business, which gives the church a powerful balance of ministry and practical impact. The Worship Center at the Derby Campus is very family oriented and the facilities are very nice. The praise and worship is excellent, and the overall atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and full of life. The campus pastor is also doing an awesome job, and you can tell there is strong leadership throughout the church. What really stands out is what they do for kids and families. The programming is strong, and it feels like a place where people at every stage can grow and be supported. Beyond that, they also care deeply about the community. Whether it is through the church itself or through their community development corporation, if there is something they can do to help uplift people, they do it. If you live in Birmingham or anywhere in this area, I would absolutely encourage you to visit their website, drop in for a service, and see it for yourself. This is a great church to visit and a great church family to be part of. Five stars.

My review is overall based on the walk through nativity: I am SO thankful for the life of Jesus…read moreChrist! This nativity is a three day event summarizing His life in 14 stations(conception, birth, teaching/preaching/ministry, death and resurrection). The Briarwood congregation gives the city of Birmingham an annual free opportunity to learn more about the true reason for the holiday season. My life is so blessed as I grow older and mature in the Lord and I am most thankful for experiences like the walk through nativity. Come one, come all. This event is appropriate for all ages. There are live animals included in several scenes (goats, sheep, donkey, calves and even a camel!!) I can honestly see this being a new family tradition. It only took an hour to walk through, we even stayed at a few scenes twice just so we could hear the story with great understanding. Alast, homemade cookies, hot chocolate and coffee were awaiting in the fellowship hall at the end of the navitity. Every church member that I encountered greeted me with a smile, God Bless you and Merry Christmas. I enjoyed the warmth and loving kindness from complete strangers. Thank you Briarwood for this ministry and the opportunity you've given us to share in the Joy of Jesus Christ. Highly recommended event for ALL!!!

The birthday lady was 100 years young this time on day of the event. The food was served in the lobby. There was enough room in the event center to seat an ample amount of people. The previous event had a Dance floor as well with a dj. There is also a nice parking lot.

The Episcopal Church of the Ascension was chartered in 1953 as a "self-organized" mission station…read morethat met in the Vestavia Hills Town Hall, in homes and schools under the guidance of Bishops Carpenter and Murray. Bishop Furman Stough [who blessed my confirmation] dedicated the church where it is currently located in 1986. This location is also home to the Ascension Episcopal Day School. Father Jack Alvey became Rector in 2018. I had seen Fr. Alvey at our Diocesan Council weekend in Nauvoo, AL and at the last Alabama Bishop's election at the Cathedral Church of the Advent. Both events were attended by 100s and I did not get to speak to Fr. Alvey. In 2019, Father Alvey baptized my three Godchildren, my stepdaughter and her two babies! Father Jack opened the church on this beautiful fall Saturday, and was such a wonderful, thoughtful host, as he performed the baptisms flawlessly at the beautiful alter, without anyone shedding a tear (and the grandchildren were little at the time) except for me -- tears of joy! Father Jack answered our questions about the church and showed us around. Despite the quality of my pictures, it really is a beautiful church with a massive organ, and a lovely nave. The Memorial Garden is lovely and serves as a "columbarium" of sorts, where members' ashes can be sprinkled and the departed can be memorialized with their information on a plaque. On the anniversary of their baptisms, I purchased arrangements for the alter to honor their baptisms and each year I did this, the arrangements were lovely and the transactions were seamless. Thanks, Ascension and thank you Father Jack!
